Our heroes can come from the most ordinary of places. As a shy lad growing up in country Victoria, no one in the district had any idea the man Albert Jacka would become.Albert 'Bert' Jacka was 21 when Britain declared war on Germany in August 1914. Bert soon enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force and the young private was assigned to 14th Battalion D Company. By the time they shipped out to Egypt he'd been made a Lance Corporal. On 26 April 1915, 14th Battalion landed at Gallipoli under the command of Brigadier General Monash's 4th Infantry Brigade. It was here, on 20 May, that Lance Corporal Albert Jacka proved he was 'the bravest of the brave'. The Turks were gaining ground with a full-scale frontal attack and as his comrades lay dead or dying in the trenches around him, Jacka single-handedly held off the enemy onslaught. The Turks retreated.Jacka's extraordinary efforts saw him awarded the Victoria Cross, the first for an Australian soldier in World War I. He was a national hero, but Jacka's wartime exploits had only just begun: moving on to France, he battled the Germans at Pozières, earning a Military Cross for what historian Charles Bean called 'the most dramatic and effective act of individual audacity in the history of the AIF'. Then at Bullecourt, his efforts would again turn the tide against the enemy. There would be more accolades and adventures before a sniper's bullet and then gassing at Villers-Bretonneux sent Bert home. The Legend of Albert Jacka is an unforgettable story of the bravery and sacrifice of one extraordinary soldier that takes us from the shores of Gallipoli to the battlefields of France, all brought to vivid life by Australia's greatest storyteller, Peter FitzSimons.

Creative Genius: Four-Quadrant Creativity in the Lives and Works of Leonardo da Vinci, Wilhelm Reich, Albert Einstein, Svjatoslav Richt
'Creative Genius'-2017 Revised, Updated and Reformatted Edition-is the second volume of Great Minds Series and the author's main publication on his more than thirty years of genius research. In this book, the author, applying the 4-quadrant IQ scheme commonly used in genius research, reviews and portrays the lives of five highly creative men: Leonardo da Vinci, Wilhelm Reich, Albert Einstein, Svjatoslav Richter and Keith Jarrett. One of the main signs of human genius is the capability to see the hidden connections between apparently separate phenomena, or to perceive phenomena as a pattern, a Gestalt, a unique configuration of attributes that leads the observer to a unifying vision. This integrative nature of all genius, the life stories of the five men clearly show it: it's the organic and systemic vision of life and living by Leonardo, the correct intuition Reich had about the underlying bioenergetic cause of schizophrenia, Einstein's vision of the interconnections between space and time, Richter's spontaneous perception of music in which is embedded a bird's perspective of correct style and musical taste, and Jarrett's unique integration of patterns of classical music with creative free-style improvisation. The book is destined to broaden the reader's awareness for apprehending a network of hidden connections that is spanning the whole gamut of human experience, from science to art, from from creative vision to tangible realization-to arrive at a comprehension of human potential, incarnated in genius, which is the highest realization of human complexity. The reason why most people cannot attain the level of human genius is not because genius is inborn-all research shows that it is not-but because they are not critical enough in the face of conformity pressure and the general solidifying framework of modern consumer culture that models citizens instead of accepting them as they are, in their full humanity. While the great lay public is the primary audience of the book, it may also be of interest for academic researchers, especially when their research is spanning the gamut of human consciousness, systems theory, quantum physics, genius research and complexity theory.
Britain in Iraq

Britain in Iraq

After the end of World War I, international pressures prevented the Allies from implementing direct colonial rule over the former Arab provinces of the Ottoman Empire. Instead, the Allies created a system of mandates for the governance of the Middle East. France was assigned Lebanon and Syria, and Britain was assigned Iraq, Palestine, and Transjordan. First published in 1976, Britain in Iraq has long been recognized as the definitive history of the mandate period, providing a meticulous and engaging account of Britain's political involvement in Iraq as well as rare insights into the motives behind the founding of the Iraqi state. Peter Sluglett presents a historical narrative of the development and implementation of the mandate in the face of considerable opposition in both Iraq and Britain and shows how the British maintained a "reliable" group of Iraqi clients in power to protect imperial interests. Sluglett explores the changing relationship between Britain and Iraq over the eighteen years of occupation and mandate, the interactions between Shi'ite and Sunni populations, the position of the Kurds, the boundary between Turkey and northern Iraq, and policies relating to defense, land tenure and the tribes, and education. A new conclusion attempts to analyze the legacy of the mandate and to offer some explanation for Iraq's continuing weakness as a state and the structural obstacles preventing the emergence of a plural political system.

Forces in Modern and Postmodern Poetry examines the works of classic authors in the modern and postmodern literary tradition, including St phane Mallarm , Wallace Stevens, Samuel Beckett, Gertrude Stein, Charles Olson, Paul Celan, Ezra Pound, William Carlos Williams, Louis Zukofsky, and John Ashbery, all from a comparative perspective. The concepts, modern and postmodern, are not used to provide definitive answers but to raise questions concerning the status of representation, issues of the self, and the use of imagery and musical invention. The wide range of the study is matched by the richly detailed analysis of specific poetic texts from an author noted for the scope and acuity of his attention to modern poetry in all its varied forms.
