Alex Feldman is challenging us to see them as the same world, except for the imposition of a given monotheism.In this process, he studies top-down, monotheistic conversions in Western Eurasia and their respective mythologisations, preserved both textually and archaeologically, serving as the foundation of recognisable state-formation. Applying this idea to Byzantium's policies around the Black and Caspian Seas, he reveals how what we today call the 'Migration-Age' continued perpetually up to the Mongolian invasions and perhaps later. This book enhances our understanding, not only of Western history, but presents it in the context of global monotheisation.

The recent unprecedented growth of Nicaragua’s sugarcane industry has brought promises of more jobs, better health care, and cleaner energy. But these promises have been overshadowed by an epidemic of chronic kidney disease of nontraditional causes (CKDnt). Unknown before the late 1990s, this disease has sickened and killed thousands of sugarcane plantation workers. Scientific studies link the disease to rises in mean average annual temperatures, chronic water scarcity, and the overuse of toxic agrochemicals. CKDnt is now understood as a consequence of global climate change. In The Kidney and the Cane, Alex M. Nading situates this epidemic within a deeper history of sugarcane plantation violence, arguing that CKDnt is not a result of climate change: it is climate change. Outlining a place-based approach to planetary health, Nading follows activists, scientists, and residents in the sugarcane zone wrestling with the consequences of plantation life. Along the way, he raises critical questions about the capacity of corporations and states to care for people and ecosystems; the ability of citizens and experts to regulate toxic substances; and the future of work on a warming planet.

See Israel & the lands of the Bible through my eyes. See both the beauty and the conflict. See the ancient and the modern. Envision war and peace in the land of milk and honey. I will take you across the thin green line, to the other side of the wall. Israel and Palestine: A Photographic Journey features images of Israel, Judea and Samaria (The West Bank), The Golan Heights, and the Egyptian Sinai Peninsula. I went to Israel the first time purely as a tourist. The second trip was more motivated by my desire to document the people, places, and culture that I was reading about online and in the media. I wanted to be close to the action. I found action alright, tons of it. Israel and the Sinai and the West Bank are hot zones for action. Anything can pop off anywhere at any time. Dozens, if not hundreds, of political hot points, flash points, that are ready to reach the boiling point. No place better exemplifies the world on its tipping point than these places I visited. They are places in flux, places where change it the only constant. Israel, Palestine, The West Bank, these are all disputed territories. Israel has been a Democracy for 64 years, but people there in positions of legislative and judicial authority seem to be abusing their powers, and applying biased and prejudiced opinions to their design and application of the law. No better example exists than in El Araqib, a Bedouin village in the Negev Desert, where the land and housing policy has been "bulldoze these people's homes to make way for a forest of trees." Dozens of other institutionally racist examples of home demolitions exist in other parts of Israel and The West Bank. The only place conspicuously missing from my photo series is Gaza. Why didn't I visit Gaza? The only way to "visit" Gaza is to do so via Rafah, Egypt. I simply did not feel comfortable going there, but in theory, it can be done. One does not "visit" Gaza from Israel. The blockade there will not allow it.

British Imperial Air Power examines the air defense of Australia and New Zealand during the interwar period. It also demonstrates the difficulty of applying new military aviation technology to the defense of the global Empire and provides insight into the nature of the political relationship between the Pacific Dominions and Britain. Following World War I, both Dominions sought greater independence in defense and foreign policy. Public aversion to military matters and the economic dislocation resulting from the war and later the Depression left little money that could be provided for their respective air forces. As a result, the Empire's air services spent the entire interwar period attempting to create a strategy in the face of these handicaps. In order to survive, the British Empire's military air forces offered themselves as a practical and economical third option in the defense of Britain's global Empire, intending to replace the Royal Navy and British Army as the traditional pillars of imperial defense.
