On the southeast coast of Florida in the 1880s, a quaint little community was nestled along the tranquil waters of the St. Lucie River in a wilderness of tropical beauty, one of the region s last frontiers. As lucrative pineapple crops and the commercial fishing industry began to flourish, trade boats brought necessary supplies, and new settlers arrived on river steamers. With land available for homesteading or for sale at $1.25 an acre, the small village soon to be known as Stuart would become a mecca for innovative, hardworking young men seeking business and financial opportunities. By the dawn of the 20th century, the railroad had been established, and the town, forged by the fortitude of early pioneers, thrived, eventually becoming a beautiful, friendly incorporated city."
On February 20, 1962, John Glenn became a national star. That morning at Cape Canaveral, the small-town boy from Ohio took his place atop a rocket and soared into space. He became celebrated in all corners of the world as not just the first American to orbit the Earth, but as the first space traveler to take the human race with him. Refusing to let that dramatic day define his life, he went on to become a four-term US senator—and returned to space at the age of seventy-seven. The Last American Hero is a stunning examination of the layers that formed the man: a hero of the Cold War, a two-time astronaut, a veteran senator, a devoted husband and father, and much more. At a time when an increasingly cynical world needs heroes, John Glenn’s aura burns brightly in American memory.
Tragedy strikes when Nita is diagnosed with three inoperable brain tumors and given a two-percent chance to survive. In order to be close to her family in her final days, she opts for hospice care at home. Her sister, Alice, prays for strength and the wisdom to carry out her role as one of Nita's caretakers. Answered Prayers is about a simple call to the Lord from a humble servant whose call is answered in the most awesome of ways, beyond what Alice could imagine. This is a moving memoir and tribute to Alice's late, beloved sister Nita. Alice shares her story of time spent caring for Nita following a medical event that leaves her unable to care for herself. Although this is an emotionally charged memoir, Alice reveals how the experience ultimately brought her closer to God. Her words will comfort others going through similar tragedy. Prayers are always answered in His way, in His timing, and in ways that are best for us.
"Now, in 2023, we are offering a complete revision to this popular book. New examples, new formatting, better reading. Customer service in American life has deteriorated to such a point in recent decades that books about fixing it have become a sub-genre of literature. This is unfortunate, but authors Alice and Clif Holliday take the subject to a new level. They combine anecdotal experiences and practical solutions to show what's wrong and right with proper service. This book's reporting and follow-up learning aspects make it worthwhile for anyone interested in improving all business services."Well done "- Dave Lieber, The Watchdog columnist, The Dallas Morning News, Oct 2018"You had a reservation for WHAT time?", "Load your own flower pot, lady," "Our accountants won't let us do that," "Somebody else will get you napkins," "That isn't my job." We have all heard similar responses when seeking service in a public establishment. They are all signs of lousy service stemming from a nasty attitude toward the basic idea of service - pleasing clients, customers, etc. This book deals with the concept of Great Service - what it is and how to achieve it in any organization - small business, corporation, church club, athletic team, or whatever. We think many service providers (and if 'service provider' does not fit you, what are you being paid for?) take a personal interest in their customers - hearing their problems, fulfilling their wants, and correcting their problems. The question, then, is what is the difference between the Great Service providers and those that are not so good? What makes a Great Service provider, or are they just born? This book is devoted to that problem and synthesizes the attributes of these positive service providers. We provide examples of our personal experiences with various service providers - some great, some not. Out of these examples, we distill the common traits of the stars and the flops. Some of this distillation will come only from our observation; in addition, many examples contain direct interviews with the better service providers to obtain their views of motivation for providing Great Service.

For thirteen days in October 1962, America stood at the brink of nuclear war. Nikita Khrushchev's decision to place nuclear missiles in Cuba and John F. Kennedy's defiant response introduced the possibility of unprecedented cataclysm. The immediate threat of destruction entered America's classrooms and its living rooms. Awaiting Armageddon provides the first in-depth look at this crisis as it roiled outside of government offices, where ordinary Americans realized their government was unprepared to protect either itself or its citizens from the dangers of nuclear war.During the seven days between Kennedy's announcement of a naval blockade and Khrushchev's decision to withdraw Soviet nuclear missiles from Cuba, U.S. citizens absorbed the nightmare scenario unfolding on their television sets. An estimated ten million Americans fled their homes; millions more prepared shelters at home, clearing the shelves of supermarkets and gun stores. Alice George captures the irrationality of the moment as Americans coped with dread and resignation, humor and pathos, terror and ignorance. In her examination of the public response to the missile crisis, the author reveals cracks in the veneer of American confidence in the early years of the space age and demonstrates how the fears generated by Cold War culture blinded many Americans to the dangers of nuclear war until it was almost too late.
The Accokeek Creek site, in Prince George’s County, Maryland, sits at the spot where the Piscataway Creek enters the Potomac, across the river from Mt. Vernon. The owner of the property, Alice Ferguson, excavated the site and wrote notes on her work, which became the basis for this volume. The site, which was also known as Moyaone, contained evidence for occupation from the Archaic to the historic period. Excavation revealed remains of a village, burials, and many classes of artifacts, including pottery, pipes, chipped stone tools, and items made from shell, antlers, and bone.
