Painstakingly made in foraged wood, sculpted marble, and cast bronze, Alma Allen's works range in scale from minuscule to oversize. These sensuous biomorphic forms caught the attention of collectors such as Beth Rudin DeWoody, Tobias Meyer, and Ronnie Sassoon and have been part of museum exhibitions as well as single-artist gallery shows. Following the inclusion of three of Allen's works in the 2014 Whitney Biennial, Time magazine named one of the pieces in their five best works in the Biennial. This is the first volume devoted to this emerging artist's work, with newly commissioned photography of Allen's studios in Joshua Tree, California, and Tepoztlan, Mexico--two spaces designed and built by Allen that have been highly lauded by press and social media. A critical essay and extended biographical text make this an insightful and welcome monograph on one of today's most sought-after artists.

This book shines a light on a remarkable heroine of the Baha i Faith. Alma Knobloch (1864-1943) one of the three Knobloch sisters, raised up the first African-American community in North America, and was instrumental in the growth of the Baha'i community in Germany. In His Tablets of the Divine Plan, 'Abdu'l-Baha wrote: 'Likewise Miss Knobloch travelled alone to Germany. To what a great extent she became confirmed ' Alma's 13 years in Germany saw an astonishing growth in the Bah ' community to become the largest in Europe. Following 'Abdu'l-Baha's visit in 1913 and the outbreak of the First World War, the emerging community focused its efforts on peace: soldiers who had attended Baha'i meetings entered the battlefields with Baha'i prayers and quotations against their breasts. Alma continued to open new Baha'i communities, and at the end of the War she emerged from the bomb shelters of Mannheim to receive confirmations in large halls overflowing with hundreds of people who came to hear the message of Baha'u'llah throughout Germany. She also taught early believers in Switzerland, Austria, and the Czech Republic, as well as future Hand of the Cause Hermann Grossmann, and the first European martyr, Adam Benke. Many of the Tablets from 'Abdu'l-Baha to Alma and other believers in Germany from 1908 to 1920 are published in English in this book for the first time. In 1920, Alma returned to the United States, where she dedicated the rest of her days to race unity, fearlessly crossing the racial and social barriers to build up lasting communities in Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina. These later years of her life have been little known until now and are recounted here.

No es as .

This selective annotated bibliography places Alma Mahler with three other female composers of her time, covering the first generation of active female composers in the twentieth century. It uncovers the wealth of resources available on the lives and music of Mahler, Florence Price, Yuliya Lazarevna Veysberg, and Maria Teresa Prieto and supports emerging scholarship and inquiry on four women who experienced both entrenched sexual discrimination and political upheaval, which affected their lives and influenced composers of subsequent generations.

Alma Mater follows the lives of seven young women in mid-nineteenth century Canada West (present-day Ontario) where they first come together at St Mary's Hall, a church-oriented boarding school in New Jersey that provides better education opportunities for girls than are currently available in Canada.Twelve-year-old Margaret Jane McFarland is an intelligent child who dreams of being a doctor like her older brother. Fifteen-year-old Harriet Taylor's widowed father only wants the best education for her to attract a good husband. Sixteen-year-old Emma Burns and her younger sister Julia have already started their education at St Mary's Hall and are now returning, to the consternation of their feisty twelve-year-old sister Isabella, who is eager to join them but is prevented from doing so by her parents until she is older. Twelve-year-old tomboy Lizzie Fuller and her ladylike thirteen-year-old sister Laura complete the group of Canadian girls venturing to the United States. Based on several years of research into the families of actual girls who attended St Mary's Hall, Pamela Borden Heckert's narrative follows their adventures in school and the various courses their lives take afterward, during which they experience the joys, challenges, and sorrows of women living in the 1800s-and above all, the endurance of schoolgirl friendships.
