Since the publication of her first novel in 1992, Am lie Nothomb continues to engage and to provoke her readers through her exploration of the fluid boundaries between beauty and monstrosity, good and evil, fable and reality, as well as by her fascinating presentation of childhood, anorexia, and the abject. In Am lie Nothomb: Authorship, Identity and Narrative Practice, the first full-length study in English of Nothomb's work, these elements are presented and interpreted from a variety of perspectives, with the contributors focusing on a single novel or comparing different texts. Comprised of a collection of essays on her autobiographical and fictional works, with contributions from her anglophone translators, it also includes an interview with the author, a preface by the eminent writer and critic, Jacques de Decker and a bibliography of secondary works. Nothomb's works and the critical responses to them are contextualized in a general introduction and organized under the following key themes: autobiography and gender identity, representations of the body, and narrative practice. This collection is an essential resource for students and scholars of twentieth-century contemporary literature and gender studies.

A child in war-torn Europe, Amelie Munk fled for her life with her mother, grandmother and younger siblings on a packed train from Paris bound for the south of France. Eking out a tough daily existence, Amelie quickly matured into a young woman whose spirited beauty saved her from several sticky encounters. Life changed for Amelie after the war, when, still a teenager, she married the man destined to become the Chief Rabbi. Amelie transformed into that rare combination - sophisticated woman-of-the-world and Jewish revivalist - rubbing shoulders with royalty and the political elite. Her husband, Chief Rabbi Jakobovits, was an adviser to the Thatcher government: chosen neither for politics nor faith, but for his earthier sense of personal and social responsibility. In her own right Amelie became a luminary of many charities and a speaker and educator on the talmudic and moral issues close to her heart. A deep spiritual connection with her faith and her belief of the sanctity of the family guided her. When Lord Jakobovits was created a Peer of the Realm by then prime minister Thatcher, Amelie Jakobovits became an icon of another kind, and is now regarded with general affection as Lady J.

The keeping of journals and diaries became an almost everyday pastime for many Americans in the nineteenth century. Adeline and Julia Graham, two young women from Berrien Springs, Michigan, were both drawn to this activity, writing about the daily events in their lives, as well as their 'grand adventures'. These are fascinating, deeply personal accounts that provide an insight into the thoughts and motivation of two sisters who lived more than a century ago. Adeline began keeping a diary when she was sixteen, from mid-1880 through mid-1884; through it we see a young woman coming of age in this small community in western Michigan.Paired with Adeline's account is her sister Julia's diary, which begins in 1885 when she sets out with three other young women to homestead in Greeley County, Kansas, just east of the Colorado border. It is a vivid and colourful narrative of a young woman's journey into America's western landscape.

Published on the occasion of her Aspen Art Museum exhibition, the artist’s first solo presentation in an American museum, this catalogue focuses on Amelie von Wulffen’s recent work, including paintings created during her time as the AAM’s 2012 Jane and Marc Nathanson Distinguished Artist in Residence. The artist deploys a host of painterly techniques that--while departing from the photographic collage practice for which she is best known--remain deeply referential, wryly revisiting and reprocessing tactics and tropes of modern painting from European Romanticism onward. The lavishly illustrated publication features an essay by AAM CEO and Director, Chief Curator, Heidi Zuckerman Jacobson, as well as a foreword by Cay Sophie Rabinowitz.
