This book examines the critical thinking disconnect between development professionals and slum dwellers. It enables practitioners, professors, and their students to investigate the gap between the types of development programs offered versus what is most beneficial to reduce extreme poverty in slum communities. With a sample of 500 residents from Mukuru Slum in Nairobi, Kenya, and 100 development professionals with expertise in poverty reduction in slums, this book sheds light on the similarities and differences between various programs. Most importantly, this book provides a theoretical way forward (The Theory of Extreme Poverty Reduction) based on Freirean pedagogy to stimulate discussion on how to program new strategies for authentic dialogue with slum dwellers that leads to the critical consciousness necessary for successful poverty reduction.

There is more to running than just running. While running is the foundation of this book, it is not all seriousness I have tried to intertwine humor, inspiration and motivation. The cover photo is based on a true (and kind of funny ) story. It is a picture of 2 mean Billy goats chasing me down the road while I was out running in the country one morning. So, run for your life, as in to save it. Also, it means to me, run for a lifetime, (a way of life, lifestyle) as I have been running since I was 7 years' old and plan to until I am no longer able. And, of course, running as a way of staying fit and healthy (in all areas of your life, physical, mental, emotional, spiritual...). I always try to focus on the 'lighter' side of things and get others to as well. Anyone who knows me well can attest to the fact that I generally tend to always look on the bright side, and when something negative happens, I have a well-known habit of saying "Well, the good thing is...." So, while I do share some deep parts of my heart & life, (mainly to relate to the humanness in us all), I try to keep the overall feel more on the funny and light-hearted side. I hope you will read my book and laugh a little, get a little emotional (in a good way) and feel inspired to get fit
