Anthony Wayne

Anthony Wayne

Paul David Nelson

Indiana University Press
1985
sidottu
Paul David Nelson has written an exciting biography of an exciting figure—the military hero of the American Revolution and the Indian Wars in the Northwest Territory—"Mad" Anthony Wayne. Some of his contemporaries called him rash and impetuous, a braggart and a dandy. "More active and enterprising than judicious and cautious" was George Washington's verdict. True, Wayne had a flair for the dramatic and consciously acted the role of swashbuckler, but he proved himself one of the best and most successful military leaders of the early American republic. Despite his reputation for madness, Wayne, as Nelson points out, was a prudent and careful officer whose military record belies the myth. When he ran out of wars to fight, Wayne turned to the political arena. Nelson shows that the qualities which made Wayne a great military leader served him well in politics. He proved himself articulate and shrewd in statecraft in a critical time for the young republic, the years just after ratification of the Constitution.

Anthony Milner, who is recognized as Britain's leading Catholic composer, has been widely praised for his ability to combine freshness and originality with a thorough grounding in the historic traditions of music. Although his choral works on religious themes have attracted a wide audience, his instrumental works also have a prominent place in the modern repertoire. This new bio-bibliography is the first book devoted to Milner's music and career. It provides fully annotated catalogues of his compositions, performances and reviews of his works, and his achievements as a teacher, writer, and lecturer. The volume begins with a biographical survey of the life and works of Anthony Milner. A works and performances section presents a catalogue arranged alphabetically by genre and supplying descriptive notes and information on commissions, texts, scoring, and publication. A bibliography of some 400 references by or about Milner lists books, articles, magazine and newspaper reviews, published or broadcast talks, lectures and interviews, record album essays, and other publications. Quotations or summaries of the contents are provided. The volume includes a complete discography as well as several supplemental lists that will help the reader locate specific information. A research tool for performers, conductors, music critics, and specialists in musicology or church music, this work will be a useful addition to collections in contemporary, choral or liturgical music.

When Anthony Blunt died in 1983, he was a man about whom almost anything could be - and was - said. As Surveyor of the Queen's Pictures and Director of the Courtauld Institute, Blunt's position was assured until his exposure in 1979 left his reputation in tatters. Miranda Carter's brilliantly insightful biography gives us a vivid portrait of a human paradox. Blunt's totally discrete lives, with their permanent contradictions, serve to remind us that there is no one key to any human being's identity: we are all a series of conflicting selves.

Skilton David

First published in 1972, the second edition of this highly respected classic of Trollope criticism will be welcomed by Trollope scholars everywhere. David Skilton examines the literary background against which Trollope wrote, and drawing on the vast evidence of mid-Victorian periodical criticism, he shows how this criticism controlled the novelist's creativity. He then goes on to examine Trollope's particular type of realism in the context of the theories of literary imagination current in the 1860s. 'A book I admire. It has been of great value to me.' - J. Hillis Miller 'The first and still the best study of Trollope's relationships, connections and interactions with the literary world of his own time. Skilton's is the necessary introduction to any serious investigation of Trollope's fiction.' - John Sutherland

Anthony Giddens

Anthony Giddens

Stjepan Mestrovic

Routledge

Anthony Giddens is arguably the world's leading sociologist. In this controversial contribution to the Giddens debate, Stjepan Mestrovic takes up and criticizes the major themes of his work - particularly the concept of 'high modernity' as opposed to 'postmodernity' and his attempted construction of a 'synthetic' tradition based on human agency and structure. Testing Giddens' theories against what is happening in the real world from genocide in Africa to near secession in Quebec, Mestrovic discerns in the construction of synthetic traditions not the promise of freedom held out by Giddens but rather the ominous potential for new forms of totalitarian control.
