'No one ever fully recovers from their past. There is no cure for it. You just learn to manage and prioritise it. I believe the second you feel you have triumphed or overcome something, anything - an abuse, an injury to the body or the mind, an addiction, a character flaw, a habit, a person - you have merely decided to stop being vigilant and embraced denial as your modus operandi. And that is what this book is about, and for: to remind you not to buy in to the Hollywood ending.'Baggage chronicles the actor's life in Hollywood and the ways in which work has repeatedly whisked him away from personal calamities to sets and stages around the world. Taking us through the highs and lows of his career, his struggle with mental health, each failed relationship or encounter with a legend (Liza! X-Men! Gore Vidal! Kubrick! Spice Girls!), every bad decision or moment of sensual joy, Cumming shows how every experience - good or bad - has shaped who he is today: a happy, flawed, vulnerable, fearless middle-aged man, with a lot of baggage. Startlingly honest, both poignant and joyous, Baggage shines a light on how to embrace the complicated messiness of life.

When Thomas MacDonald, a somewhat dull thirty-something bookstore clerk, finds three suitcases near a dumpster, he has no idea of the adventures ahead of him. He swiftly discovers that his new-found baggage is a time-travel portal, one that seems to have a purpose to its destinations into the past. But what is it? And how does his new-found love fit in? Should he tell her about his travels? Will she think he has lost his mind? Or maybe, just maybe, they might figure out how to use those suitcases to their advantage. During the COVID-19 pandemic, three writers began searching for a way to beat the "stay at home" blahs. They began work on a series of short stories, wherein each would write the beginning of a story, pass it on to the second, who passed it on to the third. At the end of the week, they met on Zoom and shared their work. One of those stories just kept growing and became the novella, Baggage. Enjoy

Ibn Bagga, Commentary on Aristotle’s ›On Generation and Corruption‹
Ibn Bagga’s commentary on Aristotle’s On Generation and Corruption (Kitab al-Kawn wa-l-fasad, Latin De generatione et corruptione) is one of the first commentaries to elaborate on the essential aspect of Aristotle’s text, that is, the analysis of change (µetaß???, tagayyur). The commentary’s extant parts comprise a consecutive exposition of the contents of Aristotle’s work. However, the commentary may be read more as an introduction or a guide to the topic of generation than as a substitution for the original, as the paraphrases by Averroes seem to have become in the later tradition. The present study provides a new critical edition of the Arabic text and, for the first time, an English translation and a study of the structure of the commentary on the basis of the only two known manuscripts.
Ibn Bagga, Commentary on Aristotle’s ›Meteorology‹

#1 UK Bestseller"A thoughtful, funny, companionable novel...executed with verve."--London TimesThe author of the acclaimed Crooked Heart returns with a comic, charming, and surprisingly timely portrait of a once pioneering suffragette trying to find her new passion in post-WWI era London.1928. Riffling through a cupboard, Matilda Simpkin comes across a small wooden club--an old possession that she hasn't seen for more than a decade. Immediately, memories come flooding back to Mattie--memories of a thrilling past, which only further serve to remind her of her chafingly uneventful present. During the Women's Suffrage Campaign, she was a militant who was jailed five times and never missed an opportunity to return to the fray. Now in middle age, the closest she gets to the excitement of her old life is the occasional lecture on the legacy of the militant movement. After running into an old suffragette comrade who has committed herself to the wave of Fascism, Mattie realizes there is a new cause she needs to fight for and turns her focus to a new generation of women. Thus the Amazons are formed, a group created to give girls a place to not only exercise their bodies but their minds, and ignite in young women a much-needed interest in the world around them. But when a new girl joins the group, sending Mattie's past crashing into her present, every principle Mattie has ever stood for is threatened. Old Baggage is a funny and bittersweet portrait of a woman who has never given up the fight and the young women who are just discovering it.

Based on groundbreaking research on the working conditions of airport check-in workers in two countries, a previously unstudied category of predominantly women workers, Ellen Rosskam describes a form of work characterized as modern-day Taylorism. An occupation greatly affected by new forms of work organization and management practices-caught in the throes of rapid change due to international competition, alliances, mergers, and the application of cost-efficiency strategies-check-in work has been undermined in recent years by the adverse effects of liberalization and technological change.By peeling away the veneer of glamour associated with airport check-in work, Rosskam reveals how changes in work organization in this sector have de-skilled, disempowered, and ultimately demoralized workers. In "Excess Baggage", weaving through the psychological distress, physical pain from musculoskeletal disorders, strain, and violence that check-in workers experience and describe in their own words, a picture emerges of a job perceived to be "safe," "clean," "glamour girl" work, but which is comparable to industrial workplaces that require heavy manual lifting, obligingly performed in skirts, dresses, and pretty little shoes.

A memoir with soul. The author, now in her 50s, living amidst a pandemic lockdown, sits in the garden shed and considers the many contrasts to life as a young Kiwi in the 1990s when she had the freedom to travel the world. In doing so, she was led from Papamoa Beach in the Bay of Plenty to the rooftop of the world. In her early twenties she meets the epitome of an English gentleman, a colleague in a London PR company. Their relationship moves through a decade of trials as friends, holiday romance and then an attempt at a longer term commitment. Learning lessons from each country and maturing to find the teacher within, she reflects on whether her life journey has been written in the stars. A travelogue in which to immerse yourself, capturing a true love story.
