Propaganda in Autocracies

Propaganda in Autocracies

A dictator's power is secure, the authors begin in this muscular, impressive study, only as long as citizens believe in it. When citizens suddenly believe otherwise, a dictator's power is anything but, as the Soviet Union's collapse revealed. This conviction – that power rests ultimately on citizens' beliefs – compels the world's autocrats to invest in sophisticated propaganda. This study draws on the first global data set of autocratic propaganda, encompassing nearly eight million newspaper articles from fifty-nine countries in six languages. The authors document dramatic variation in propaganda across autocracies: in coverage of the regime and its opponents, in narratives about domestic and international life, in the threats of violence issued to citizens, and in the domestic events that shape it. The book explains why Russian President Vladimir uses Donald Trump as a propaganda tool and why Chinese state propaganda is more effusive than any point since the Cultural Revolution.

Matthew Boulton was a leading industrialist, entrepreneur and Enlightenment figure. Often overshadowed through his association with James Watt, his Soho manufactories put Birmingham at the centre of what has recently been termed 'The Industrial Enlightenment'. Exploring his many activities and manufactures-and the regional, national and international context in which he operated-this publication provides a valuable index to the current state of Boulton studies. Combining original contributions from social, economic, and cultural historians, with those of historians of science, technology and art, archaeologists and heritage professionals, the book sheds new light on the general culture of the eighteenth century, including patterns of work, production and consumption of the products of art and industry. The book also extends and enhances knowledge of the Enlightenment, industrialization and the processes of globalization in the eighteenth century.

In recent years the pace of reform in health policy and the NHS has been relentless. But how are policies formed and implemented? This fully updated edition of a bestselling book explores the processes and institutions that make health policy, examining what constitutes health policy, where power lies, and what changes could be made to improve the quality of health policy making. Drawing on original research by the author over many years, and a wide range of secondary sources, the book examines the role of various institutions in the formation and implementation of health policy. Unlike most standard texts, it considers the impact of devolution in the UK and the role of European and international institutions and fills a need for an up-to-date overview of this fast-moving area. It features new case studies to illustrate how policy has evolved and developed in recent years. This new edition has been fully updated to reflect policies under the later years of New Labour and the Coalition government. Although written particularly with the needs of students and tutors in mind, this accessible textbook will also appeal to policy makers and practitioners in the health policy field.

The stunning conclusion to the trilogy that began with Pure, recommended by People for those who loved The Hunger Games. With his father now dead, Partridge has assumed leadership of the Dome, one of the last few refuges from the ravaged wastelands of the outside world. At first, Partridge is intent on exposing his father's lies, taking down the rigid order of the Dome, and uniting its citizens with the disfigured Wretches on the outside. But from his new position of power, things are far more complex and potentially dangerous than he could have ever imagined. On the outside, a band of survivors faces a treacherous journey to Dome. Pressia carries with her the key to salvation. If she can get it to the Dome, the Wretches could one day be healed and everyone might be able to put the horrors of the past behind them. Bradwell, the revolutionary, cannot forgive so easily. Despite Pressia's pleas, he is determined to bring down the Dome and hold its citizens accountable for leaving the rest of the world to burn. El Capitan, the former rebel leader, wants to help Pressia save as many lives as possible--but he's struggling to reconcile his newfound compassion with his vicious past. As former allies become potential enemies, the fate of the world is more uncertain than ever. Will humanity fall to destruction? Or will a new world rise from the ashes?

Julianna Baggott presents her beautifully written, riveting, breakout novel, PURE, the first volume in her new post-apocalypse thriller trilogy. We know you are here, our brothers and sisters . . . Pressia barely remembers the Detonations or much about life during the Before. In her sleeping cabinet behind the rubble of an old barbershop where she lives with her grandfather, she thinks about what is lost-how the world went from amusement parks, movie theaters, birthday parties, fathers and mothers . . . to ash and dust, scars, permanent burns, and fused, damaged bodies. And now, at an age when everyone is required to turn themselves over to the militia to either be trained as a soldier or, if they are too damaged and weak, to be used as live targets, Pressia can no longer pretend to be small. Pressia is on the run. Burn a Pure and Breathe the Ash . . . There are those who escaped the apocalypse unmarked. Pures. They are tucked safely inside the Dome that protects their healthy, superior bodies. Yet Partridge, whose father is one of the most influential men in the Dome, feels isolated and lonely. Different. He thinks about loss-maybe just because his family is broken; his father is emotionally distant; his brother killed himself; and his mother never made it inside their shelter. Or maybe it's his claustrophobia: his feeling that this Dome has become a swaddling of intensely rigid order. So when a slipped phrase suggests his mother might still be alive, Partridge risks his life to leave the Dome to find her. When Pressia meets Partridge, their worlds shatter all over again.

Bestselling author Julianna Baggott presents the second volume in her new post-apocalyptic, dystopian thriller trilogy. We want our son returned. This girl is proof that we can save you all. If you ignore our plea, we will kill our hostages one at a time. To be a Pure is to be perfect, untouched by Detonations that scarred the earth, and sheltered inside the paradise that is the Dome. But Partridge escaped to the outside world, where Wretches struggle to survive amid smoke and ash. Now, at the command of Partridge's father, the Dome is unleashing nightmare after nightmare upon the Wretches in an effort to get him back. At Partridge's side is a small band of those united against the Dome: Lyda, the warrior; Bradwell, the revolutionary; El Capitan, the guard; and Pressia, the young woman whose mysterious past ties her to Partridge in ways she never could have imagined. Long ago a plan was hatched that could mean the earth's ultimate doom. Now only Partridge and Pressia can set things right. To save millions of innocent lives, Partridge must risk his own by returning to the Dome and facing his most terrifying challenge. And Pressia, armed only with a mysterious Black Box containing a set of cryptic clues, must travel to the very ends of the earth, to a place where no map can guide her. If they succeed, the world will be saved. But should they fail, humankind will pay a terrible price . . .

Throughout the life of Jesus-where He went, what He did-where He chose to stop is perhaps the most fascinating aspect of His ministry. In those special moments in the gospel, we watch in wonder as Jesus went out of His way, even changing direction, to seek out a certain few-especially women. When we look at the stops along Jesus's journey, we discover amazing truths about His character-we learn what's important to Him, who matters to Him, and why He came to be the Savior of the world. In Jesus's Stops: The Women Jesus Encountered in John's Gospel and Why It Matters Now, author Dawn Ford takes you on an adventure with Christ that will open your eyes to His powerful one-on-one conversations with women of the Bible. While these women may not have been unique by the world's standards-and most lived in shame and were marginalized-Jesus stopped to be with them. He saw them worthy of an encounter with the Son of God, and their lives were never the same. Through Ford's captivating narration of these valuable stories from Jesus's time on earth, you will experience the transformational love of God that brought compassion, wisdom, and revelation to the women on Jesus's path. From His miracle at the wedding of Cana to His appearance before Mary Magdalene after His resurrection, Jesus's Stops reveals powerful insight within our Savior's interactions with women from the gospel of John. Just as Jesus longed to encounter the women in these stories, He wants to meet you the same way. He sees you as a child of God who is worth His time. As you read Jesus's Stops, invite Him to invade your current circumstances and change your life in a radical way. Bible teacher and speaker, Dawn Ford is passionate about seeing lives transformed through the healing power of God's Word. Her approachable and warm style resonates with audiences, allowing her to share the message of God's infinite love. Dawn is a licensed speech-language pathologist and her passion is helping people. Her hobbies include kayaking, college football, and podcasting. She has earned degrees from the University of Florida, the University of South Florida and the University of Central Florida. Dawn lives in Ocala, Florida where she loves spending time with her mom and socializing with lifelong friends.

In recent years the pace of reform in health policy and the NHS has been relentless. But how are policies formed and implemented? This exciting new book takes a fresh look at the processes and institutions that make health policy. Based on original research, including a series of in-depth interviews with health policy actors, the book: examines the role of various institutions in the formation and implementation of health policy, including central government departments and agencies, Parliament, political parties, pressure groups, the media, the NHS, and local government bodies; considers the impact of devolution on health policy and the role of European and international organisations; features case studies to illustrate how policy has evolved and developed in recent years. Among the key questions raised in the book are: what constitutes health policy? Where does power lie in health policy-making? What aspects of the health policy process have changed in recent years and what features have remained? And, what changes could be made to improve the quality of health policy-making? As with all the books in the "Understanding Welfare" series, this book has been written particularly with the needs of students in mind. However, it will also be invaluable to policy makers and practitioners in the health policy field.
