Nominee for the 2012 Silver Birch Express Award in the Ontario Library Association's Forest of Reading Program. Jeremiah Birnbaum is stinking rich. He lives in a house with nine bathrooms, a games room, an exercise room, an indoor pool, a hot tub, a movie theater, a bowling alley and a tennis court. His parents, a former hotdog vendor and window cleaner who made it big in dental floss, make sure Jeremiah goes to the very best private school, and that he takes lessons in all the things he will need to know how to do as an accomplished and impressive young man: etiquette lessons, ballroom dancing, watercolor painting. And, of course, classical piano. Jeremiah complies, because he wants to please his parents. But one day, by chance, he hears the captivating strains of a different kind of music -- the strums, plucks and rhythms of a banjo. It is music that stirs something in Jeremiah's dutiful little soul, and he is suddenly obsessed. And when his parents forbid him to play one, he decides to learn anyway -- even if he has to make the instrument himself.

But it’s the dead folks that do him the damage. It’s the dead ones that lay quiet in one place and don’t try to hold him, that he can’t escape from. —William Faulkner, Light in August There is an inexplicable gravity in a small town. It can be read and enjoyed like a favorite book for most of its inhabitants. Comforting are its streets and institutions, its wedding and obituary announcements. Banjo Grease is about life and death in a mill town where at each epiphany and rite of passage, the narrator yields a ration of innocence. Characters portray class as a marker as strong as race and gender, and distrust that they will ever escape in their lifetimes. Faulkner uses the term “eager fatalism.” These stories’ cumulative effect asks: When exchanging naivete for worldliness, what is lost in denying one’s past?

Banjo Man tells the story of Susan Willson Reese, a widow, retired schoolteacher, and accomplished bluegrass and old-time banjo picker. A native of the fictional community of Willson's Cove in the North Carolina mountains, she has been trying to find one of the many handcrafted fretless banjos her grandpa, Luther Willson, built back in the early 1900s. Her quest has been a twenty-year search of futility. Grandpa had been a well-known luthier and musician in the mountains of North Carolina, building fiddles, lap dulcimers, and fretless banjos from the early part of the twentieth century until he died in the 1950s. Before World War I, he began taking them by train to St. Petersburg, Florida, and selling them, leaving his wife and several children for weeks and even months at a time. When Susan meets Dr. John "Mac" McBride, a romance follows, and she becomes Mrs. McBride. While on their honeymoon, she finally stumbles on one of Grandpa's banjos along with the banjo's owner, the accomplished banjo picker and singer Harry Harvey. This discovery opens a whole new can of worms: scandals, identity issues, secrets unveiled, and more. Susan learns that life, as she has known it, has been built on deception. Suspicions, denials, searches in dusty attics, and secret stashes bring the large Willson clan to a new understanding about their history. Not only is Susan's entire life challenged, but she comes face-to-face with her own need for the faith she has set aside over the last several decades. Are her questions about her identity ever resolved? Will these events destroy a close-knit mountain clan? Banjo Man introduces a full cast of mostly senior citizens, including nursing home residents, Susan's Aunt Carrie and others, who are intricately involved in Susan's drama.

"You want to shake the hand that shook the hand of Harry Truman? Is that your game?" Those were the hostile words that greeted Ben Levin, an aspiring writer eager to craft a novel that spanned Banjo Boy's one hundred years. Reluctantly, the old man revealed his history that began in extreme poverty at the coal mines of West Virginia, now nearing its end in an ultra-luxury condo overlooking the Pacific Ocean. He fought poverty in childhood, criminals on occasion, Japanese in World War II. The results of events were often rewarding, sometimes tragic, never by choice. After Banjo Boy agreed to be interviewed, his opening statement knocked the air right out of Ben Levin, a young man who had been sheltered from hardship. "I killed my Ma coming into this world and my Pa thirteen and a half years later. Ha little choice in the matter."

The old gods only ask for forgiveness when watching from too far a distance. They guess and risk and let their furred ankles meet a finger's shaky tip. In our looking up and inward, we, too, construct a primeval forest populated by winding rows of tiger lilies imagined in a lover's nautical ear where shipwrecks line beaches made of nickel and iron. Here, hunger comprises both soil and canopy, and little escapes the hourglass's rough rim. The poems in this collection are meant for such appetites. Images do not just leap from line to line, they duck and burrow between pages, careful to reveal their earnestness only to those with mouths open wide. Banjo's Inside Coyote is a book of questions--those meant to remind us to stay longer in the mossy Inn and listen close to stories we should not soon forget. In every port, one barstool will host a long wagging tail. If we follow its swing to spine to throat to snout, we will notice teeth spread broad in a smile, in a welcome and warning. Answers are risky. They are propelled by lust and hope for beauty, by something like a winged raft too quick down a trickster's river. The poems in Kelli Allen's third full length collection ask us to curl our tongues past the lips we lick for salt, the ones we part when asking for longer here, in this place of pirate flags and slick bellies still hot under busy palms. These are poems for what we offer inside-out, for whomever might be waiting on the shore.
