Beyond Reasonable Doubt and Probable Cause: Historical Perspectives on the Anglo-American Law of Evidence delves into the evolution of evidentiary doctrines within the Anglo-American legal system, focusing on their development from the early modern period to the twentieth century. This book examines the historical and intellectual underpinnings of key concepts like "beyond reasonable doubt" and "probable cause," exploring their roles in shaping the criminal justice process across various stages, from arrest to jury deliberation. By engaging with both doctrinal writings and broader philosophical and religious influences, the study highlights the interplay between evolving legal standards and cultural notions of truth and certainty. The work also traces the migration of evidentiary principles between institutions, such as the grand jury, trial jury, and pretrial hearings, and examines how these concepts were influenced by Romano-canon traditions. The book is structured thematically, addressing three major areas: the interaction between legal and philosophical ideas of evidence and proof; the transmission of evidentiary concepts across different procedural stages; and the impact of Romano-canon traditions on English law. Individual chapters tackle topics such as the trial jury's reliance on "beyond reasonable doubt," the grand jury's evidentiary standards, and the migration of "probable cause" across arrest, search, and pretrial procedures. The analysis also revisits philosophical contributions to evidentiary concepts and explores the incorporation of circumstantial evidence and presumption into Anglo-American legal thought. Ultimately, this study sheds light on how these legal doctrines have shaped and reflected the intellectual and institutional foundations of Anglo-American legal culture. Monitoring Ecological Impacts provides the tools needed by professional ecologists, scientists, engineers, planners and managers to design assessment programs that can reliably monitor, detect and allow management of human impacts on the natural environment. The procedures described are well grounded in inferential logic, and the statistical models needed to analyse complex data are given. Step-by-step guidelines and flow diagrams provide the reader with clear and useable protocols, which can be applied in any region of the world and to a wide range of human impacts. In addition, real examples are used to show how the theory can be put into practice. Although the context of this book is flowing water environments, especially rivers and streams, the advice for designing assessment programs can be applied to any ecosystem.

The American Civil War destroyed slavery in the South. At first, most white Americans denied what would eventually seem self-evident. But black Americans saw clearly that the sectional conflict was their greatest opportunity for liberation. This volume of Freedom presents a documentary record of the transformation of the Civil War into a war against slavery, and the slaves' role in their own emancipation. The Destruction of Slavery shows the process by which a war for Union became a war for freedom. It demonstrates how three interrelated circumstances opened opportunities to slaves: first, the character of slave society; second, the course of the war itself; and third, the policies of the Union and Confederate governments. Together, they made emancipation an uneven, halting, and often tenuous process in which slaves played the central role.

Soul Whispers: Listening to the Wisdom Within is an inspirational book of poetic verse containing universal truths and wisdom. Life continually presents each of us with challenges and decision points that can cause us to lose sight of how to make the best choices. The author believes insight to meet these challenges lies within us, if we listen to our inner knowing. She attributes her wisdom to deep roots in Appalachia and the teachings of her ancestors. Suggestions are offered in the book's introduction on how to tap into what we already know to discern the difference between fear and intuition. To lend visual interpretation to each poem or verse, the author commissioned a photographer to provide images for the reader to contemplate. The poems in Soul Whispers offer daily inspirational wisdom for anyone. Since its release in 2018, Soul Whispers: Listening to the Wisdom Within has received praise from authors and poets alike for its profound insights and luminous images. This updated edition offers in-depth insight into the author's heritage and what it's like to grow up in the Appalachian Mountains. This book of verse is a timely contemplative guide for these times and is an ideal gift book.
THE ACCIDENTAL BAKER, a cake for every crisis, is a courageous memoir, revealing a near perfect life and marriage gone wrong A mother, homemaker and social hostess in an ideal house and family in the affluent suburb of West Vancouver, Canada, Barbara's reality became a nightmare when her husband of thirty years lost his income, sank into alcoholism and died. Widowed, destitute and soon to be homeless, she realized 'no white knight' was going to ride in and save her. She needed a plan. Barbara turned to her talent for food preparation and baking and found her niche market in the culinary world. Using only her homemaker experience, she opened 'Cuisine de Barbara' a private cooking school. Soon Bon App tit Magazine featured Barbara in an amazing spread of ten pages, propelling her onto an executive position in San Francisco. After six years in this corporate world, she was downsized out of her high powered job. Networking and her own creativity saved her again. She opened FunFrance Travels, a boutique food and wine travel company plus The Beideman Street Group, her own food consulting business. In her memoir, The Accidental Baker, food was the common theme; it flowed like a silky ribbon throughout her life, giving credibility and warmth to every crisis. The lessons learned on the road to success make for great reading and baking. This story sends a powerful message: your dreams are within your reach. You can do it A memoir with recipes.
Melanie a 66 year old married woman was living her life much as a plane in a holding pattern: circling the sky but unable to land. She had a good job, a husband and a beautiful home, blessed with wonderful children and the ability to do most things she wanted. But there was a big void: love, romance and connection. Until one day a Facebook message from an old high school classmate came across her monitor. Her life changed on a dime, only she didn't know it then, taking her down a path of love, romance, pain, confusion and then a miraculous transformation. It's never too late to believe in yourself enough to roll the dice one more time...but at what price? The novel follows one woman's quest to rediscover herself in ways she had forgotten existed. My hope is that the story will be an inspiration for others to achieve romantic love and fulfillment. This book is about confidence, taking risks, and making good use all of the 1,440 minutes of each day.
