Barbara Hepworth is one of the most important artists of the 20th century, yet she has been the subject of relatively few monographs in comparison to her male counterparts. This biography moves beyond the traditional narratives of modernism, truth to materials, and the landscape to provide a penetrating insight into Hepworth’s remarkable life, work and legacy. Barbara Hepworth was reproached for single-mindedness in her lifetime, with critics and commentators framing both the artist and her work as ‘cool and restrained’. A continued focus on her modernist abstract sculpture of the 1930s and its relation to her male contemporaries has left vast swathes of her work and related passions overlooked. This fully illustrated biography reflects for the first time Hepworth’s multi-faceted, interdisciplinary and networked approach, shedding light as never before on her interests in music, dance, poetry, contemporary politics, science and technology; her engagement with these fields through friends and networks as well as her artistic practice; and the ways in which she synthesized sometimes seemingly conflicting disciplines and ideas into one coherent and inspirational philosophy of art and life. With 178 illustrations

Barbara Hepworth died in 1975, after a long illness which had not prevented her from completing the work which many consider to be her masterpiece: The Family of Man. Born in Yorkshire in 1903, of the heroic generation in twentieth-century British art which included Henry Moore (with whom she studied in Leeds) and Ben Nicholson (whom she married), she explored in her sculpture the forms of life - especially human life - as well as those of mathematics. Professor Hammacher has added new material to his study to bring the story up to the time of her death, and has included several new illustrations.

Barbara Tucker: The Art of Being presents a multifaceted view of Tucker and the life she made with her artist husband Albert. Inspired by accounts of family, friends and admirers attending her memorial, it contains speeches, essays, memoirs and a photo journal. Her nephew Darren Jones and niece Caitlin Graham-Jones give beautifully realised accounts; her godson, Justin O'Brien, rails against a world that seemed to ignore or misinterpret her life; her brother, Peter Bilcock, gives a moving eulogy. Judith Pugh's tribute evokes a marvellously vivid woman and loyal ally; Jinx Nolan's is filled with gratitude and gladness for Barbara's presence. The collection contains contributions from Heide Museum of Modern Art and other institutions that benefited from her foresight and generosity.Tucker emerges not just as a woman bound by the role prescribed in her times, but as a complex person with a great gift for friendship, as well as an artist's advocate, agent, defender and facilitator who should carry her own story, independently and unobscured, alongside the story of Albert Tucker and art in Australia.

' It's tinged with gentle humor, affection and wisdom." -The Daily Gazette "Perfection...Great theatre..." -East Side Life "The playwright and actress herself is the intersection of seven memorable characters ...it's easy to see why people would want to hang out in her diner." -Cincinnati City Beat
