Barry Lemming & the Demon's Bluff

Barry Lemming & the Demon's Bluff

Will Barry Survive His Encounter on the Bluffs? Barry finished loading bullets into the gun and waited. Not here, the demon said, putting words directly into Barry's mind. Out on the bluffs. Barry nodded and obeyed. He was on automatic pilot now. Everything in the last thirty-two years had led him here. At the moment of decision, the moment of reckoning, it was his body and mind obeying commands and doing what he was told, the "good boy" down to his final moments on Earth. Barry's hand began to shake, the gun gesticulating wildly back and forth in front of him. Steady yourself, Barry, the demon said. You need to do this. It's the only way you'll feel better. The whole thing felt surreal...like he wasn't really standing on the Bluffs in the Palisades, looking out over the gorgeous Pacific Ocean, listening to a big giant red demon with a steel gun in his hand. He thought of Patricia then, their first few dates back in college, making love in the afternoon to Van Morrison's Tupelo Honey and skipping class to go out to the Reservoir and drink Coors Light cold from the can. How had things gotten so bad? He raised the gun and fired. The bullet exited the chamber, heading at the speed of light towards his brain. **************** It took Jeff Rahim Bronner ten years to craft this story from his experiences as a student of Shadhiliyya Sufism. He won a scholarship to the University of New Orleans' MFA Program and is now a Muqaddam Murabbai Ruhi in the Shadhiliyya Sufi Order. This is his first novel. You can reach him at jeffbronner.com

Bernard Shaw and Barry Jackson

Bernard Shaw and Barry Jackson

Barry Jackson; Bernard Shaw

University of Toronto Press

Virtually ignored in histories of twentieth-century British theatre in favour of the more celebrated relationship of Bernard Shaw and Harley Granville Barker, the friendship of Bernard Shaw and Sir Barry Jackson is given prominence in this new book by L.W. Conolly. The collection of 183 letters, all but two of which are previously unpublished, sheds new light on a partnership that for Shaw was the most important of his later playwriting career, and for Jackson was central to his pioneering and acclaimed work in British regional theatre in both Birmingham and Stratford-upon-Avon. Also included are letters from Shaw's wife, Charlotte, and secretary, Blanche Patch, to Jackson. Headnotes with each letter set its context and provide a narrative of the continuing Shaw-Jackson relationship; further notations identify literary, historical, theatrical, and political references and allusions. Of interest to both the Shaw specialist and the drama generalist, this collection of letters represents a significant addition to modern understanding of Shaw and of British theatre.
Barry Goldwater and the Remaking of the American Political Landscape
Nearly four million Americans worked on Barry Goldwater's behalf in the presidential election of 1964. These citizens were as dedicated to their cause as those who fought for civil rights and against the Vietnam War. Arguably, the conservative agenda that began with Goldwater has had effects on American politics and society as profound and far reaching as the liberalism of the 1960s. According to the essays in this volume, it's high time for a reconsideration of Barry Goldwater's legacy. Since Goldwater's death in 1998, politicians, pundits, and academics have been assessing his achievements and his shortcomings. The twelve essays in this volume thoroughly examine the life, times, and impact of "Mr. Conservative." Scrutinizing the transformation of a Phoenix department store owner into a politician, de facto political philosopher, and five-time US senator, contributors highlight the importance of power, showcasing the relationship between the nascent conservative movement's cadre of elite businessmen, newsmen, and intellectuals and their followers at the grassroots--or sagebrush--level. Goldwater, who was born in the Arizona Territory in 1909, was deeply influenced by his Western upbringing. With his appearance on the national stage in 1964, he not only articulated a new brand of conservatism but gave a voice to many Americans who were not enamored with the social and political changes of the era. He may have lost the battle for the presidency, but he energized a coalition of journalists, publishers, women's groups, and Southerners to band together in a movement that reshaped the nation.

Of the conceptual artists who began their careers in the 1960s and 1970s—Bruce Nauman, Chris Burden, Vito Acconci, and Mel Bochner among them—Barry Le Va may be the most elusive. As this first study of his work reveals, his rigorously planned art was instigated to mask its creator’s intentions and methods, presenting itself as an “aftermath” of modernism’s claim to permanency and civil society’s preferred mode of monumentalism. For Michael Maizels, Le Va’s work constitutes a particularly productive subject of inquiry because it clearly articulates the interconnection between the avant-garde’s distrust of autonomous art objects, two decades of social unrest, the emergence of information theory, and lingering notions of scientific objectivity. Barry Le Va: The Aesthetic Aftermath explores how Le Va used such materials as shattered glass, spent bullets, sound recordings, scattered flour, and meat cleavers embedded in a floor to challenge the interlocking assumptions behind blind faith in lasting beauty, just government, and perfectible knowledge. Taking inspiration from popular crime novels as well as contemporary art theory, Le Va charged his viewers to attempt, like detectives at a crime scene, to decipher an order underlying the apparent chaos.Le Va’s installations were designed to erode not simply the presumed autonomy of the art object but also the economic and political authority of the art establishment. In his concluding chapter, Maizels looks at the more fixed work of the past two decades in which Le Va turned to architectural themes and cast concrete to probe the limits of dynamism and the idea of permanence.

Few people have made greater contributions to protecting and improving the environment than the scientist, teacher, activist Dr. Barry Commoner. For half a century, Dr. Commoner has been an international leader in the environmental movement. On the occasion of his eightieth birthday, a symposium was held at which invited speakers discussed his contributions to a wide range of environmental issues. This book, collecting many of the invited papers, provides fascinating insights into the life and work of one of the twentieth century's most influential scientists and social activists. Chapters contributed by other activists, scientists, and scholars including Ralph Nader, Tony Mazzocchi and Peter Montague cover many of Dr. Commoner's major contributions.

In March 1990, after kissing his wife and boys goodbye, Barry Jones departed his small town home and headed to work in the city. He never arrived. Now seven years later, in order to collect his life insurance, Cathy Jones is set to have the courts declare her absentee husband dead once and for all. Enter Private Investigator Steve Cassidy - a man with a checkered past and looking for a second chance. Hired by Global Insurance to take a fresh look at this cold case, Cassidy must try to uncover new clues to Jones' disappearance. However, with the court date looming, there is precious little time to complete his investigation. In addition to seeking out the truth, Cassidy must overcome another major obstacle: the skeptical locals in his hometown of Delta, which he left under mysterious circumstances years earlier. Cassidy must also explore his own heart when confronted by his high school sweetheart - the girl he left behind. Like Barry Jones, he too had disappeared without a trace, leaving behind countless unanswered questions. Did he and Jones have more in common than he would like to admit? If so, would the information ultimately help him find his man? Global Insurance was gambling he could, while the good citizens of Delta were wagering he couldn't. Steve Cassidy, a disgraced ex-cop with a broken soul, had his work cut out for him. He knew this time around, he had one final shot at redemption and could blame no one but himself if he failed to solve his first big case.
