Written in 1918, this is the story of Bertram Cope, a young college student, who is befriended by Medora Philips, a wealthy older woman who tries to match him with several eligible young women. However, Bertram is emotionally attached only to his friend, Arthur Lemoyne. The novel's portrayal of their friendship is subtle but has clear overtones of sexual attraction. Largely dismissed by contemporary critics, the novel is now considered a pioneering work of both American realism and gay literature.
Just imagine how exciting it can be to make a new friend when you least expect it A wonderful story in rhymed verse, Bertram Finds A Friend, shows us how trust, compassion and respect can lead to forever friendships

The first comprehensive look at a leading figure in Canadian modernism and the many facets of his artistic creativity. Bertram Brooker (1888–1955), an associate of the Group of Seven, was a multi-disciplinary artist who was deeply engaged with the visual, literary and performing arts in Canada during the dynamic inter-war period. This was a time of dramatic change in Canadian cultural life, and Brooker was one of the artistic community’s most gifted first responders. In 1927 he burst onto the Toronto art scene at the Arts and Letters Club with his painting exhibition "World and Spirit," considered to be the first show of abstract paintings in Canada. An advertising executive by day, he was inspired by music and mystical experience throughout his polymathic creative career. Brooker combined elements of abstraction and figuration as a painter, illustrator and graphic designer – the focus of this publication – and reflected myriad strains of contemporary thought in his efforts as a novelist, poet, short-story and essay writer, screenwriter, playwright, actor, musician, and as one of the most influential art critics of his day.Bertram Brooker: When We Awake! is the fully illustrated catalogue accompanying the exhibition organized by the McMichael Canadian Art Collection and curated by noted Canadian art scholar Michael Parke-Taylor, placing Brooker’s career as a visual artist in the context of his wider creativity at last. It includes 150 of his paintings and drawings, a detailed chronology of his career, and new critical reflections on his trailblazing contribution to Canadian cultural life.
Bertram Windle was a doctor, a scientist, an archaeologist, an anthropologist, a writer on English literature and evolution, and President of Queen's/University College Cork. During his time in Ireland between 1904 and 1919, he had a major impact on the development of higher education and the development of the National University of Ireland. Windle was a privileged participant in Irish public affairs with friends in the British Government, Dublin Castle, the Irish Parliamentary Party, the Gaelic League and the Catholic Church. The son of a Church of Ireland rector, he studied medicine at Trinity College Dublin. A convert to Catholicism in the early 1880s, he became a Professor of Anatomy in Birmingham, helping to found Birmingham University. He took up his post as President of Queen's College Cork in 1904, transforming the university during the following decade and a half into a modern institution with an enhanced curriculum, more staff, a growing student body and new buildings and facilities. He was responsible for the building of the Honan Hostel and Honan chapel. Windle viewed with great concern the rise of radical nationalism and the growth of Sinn Fein. He was a strong supporter of the British government's participation in World War 1, a critic of the 1916 rising, and a member of the Irish Convention which sought to resolve the 'Irish question' in 1917/1918. Windle had no sympathy for the new radical nationalist coalition which contested the general election of 1918. In the context of the decline of the Irish Parliamentary Party and the rise of Sinn Fein led by Eamon de Valera, he launched his second unsuccessful bid to establish an autonomous university of Munster. Thwarted by a combination of nationalist intransigence and the weakness of the British government, he left Ireland for Canada in 1919 thoroughly disillusioned by the politics of UCC, the Irish Catholic Church and the emerging independent Irish state. Students of Irish history, politics, culture, society and education will find the work of interest together with those who wish to see Windle in his role as a scientist and commentator on evolution and on religious matters. Windle, given his background and formation, provides a unique view of Irish politics, history and education. The work is all the more important because of the richness primary sources on which it is based
“Entertaining . . . eminently readable, distinguished by beautifully evoked period atmosphere and sly humor.”—The New York TimesAmerica’s first gay novel, published in 1919.

What is a man's best age? Peter Ibbetson, entering dreamland with complete freedom to choose, chose twenty-eight, and kept there. But twenty-eight, for our present purpose, has a drawback: a man of that age, if endowed with ordinary gifts and responsive to ordinary opportunities, is undeniably-a man; whereas what we require here is something just a little short of that. Wanted, in fact, a young male who shall seem fully adult to those who are younger still, and who may even appear the accomplished flower of virility to an idealizing maid or so, yet who shall elicit from the middle-aged the kindly indulgence due a boy. Perhaps you will say that even a man of twenty-eight may seem only a boy to a man of seventy. However, no septuagenarian is to figure in these pages. Our elders will be but in the middle forties and the earlier fifties; and we must find for them an age which may evoke their friendly interest, and yet be likely to call forth, besides that, their sympathy and their longing admiration, and later their tolerance, their patience, and even their forgiveness. I think, then, that Bertram Cope, when he began to intrigue the little group which dwelt among the quadruple avenues of elms that led to the campus in Churchton, was but about twenty-four, -certainly not a day more than twenty-five. If twenty-eight is the ideal age, the best is all the better for being just a little ahead.
