The Murders of Boysie Singh, first published in 1962, is a classic for several reasons. It tells the true but almost unbelievable story of a Trinidadian badjohn who in the 1940s and 1950s was a much reported celebrity of the criminal and legal world. Believed to have committed scores of murders in his guise as a pirate who dumped would-be migrants from Trinidad to Venezuela overboard to the sharks, he was hanged for just one proven crime, a murder he in fact may not have done, and for which no body was found. The story that Derek Bickerton tells is a classic because it both focuses on themes that remain pertinent to Trinidadian culture and reminds the reader that current alarms about crime and an escalating murder rate are very far from new. In his book PARENTS AT WAR David Bickerton tells the story of his parents' wartime experiences through some 150 letters, written between 1942 and 1945 and full of passion. His father, Don is in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve and is serving on HMS Dorsetshire during the sinking of the Bismark. Then, at the age of 25, hecommands an armed Motor Launch. His mother, Linda is in the Women's Auxiliary Air Force and a radar operator including during the D-Day landings. The author discovers that, when his parents meet in 1942, they have an intense relationship and become engaged. However Don - who by his own admission has something of a 'reputation' - must first break off his betrothal to another much to his own mother's disapproval. After just 14 weeks their relationship is interrupted as Don is sent to the hostile waters of the Mediterranean. There his ship is 'first in' during the invasion of Algeria. After the invasions of Sicily, Salerno and Anzio, he declares that his is the only ML involved in all four invasions. There follows the invasions of Elba and Southern France where the Maquis sign a 'pact of friendship' on his ship. After nearly three years he returns home and, ten days later, they enter a marriage that lasts a lifetime.As well as examining the progress of the war, the author explores the social history of the forties based on topics discussed in the letters, detailing films seen in the cinema, books read and the swing music.The book includes all the letter transcripts, Services documents, the author's narrative, and numerous photos and illustrations.

Technocratic appeals to expertise and populist invocations of 'the people' have become mainstays of political competition in established democracies. This development is best understood as the emergence of technopopulism—a new political logic that is being superimposed on the traditional struggle between left and right. Political movements and actors—such as Italy's Five Star Movement and France's La Républiqe En Marche—combine technocratic and populist appeals in a variety of ways, as do more established parties that are adapting to the particular set of incentives and constraints implicit in this new, unmediated form of politics. In the first book-length treatment of the phenomenon of technopopulism, we combine theoretical and historical approaches, offering a systematic definition of the concept of technopopulism, while also exploring a number of salient contemporary examples. This book provides a detailed account of the emergence of this new political logic, as well as a discussion of its troubling consequences for existing democratic regimes. European integration confuses citizens and scholars alike. It appears to transfer power away from national capitals towards Brussels yet a close study of the EU reveals the absence of any real leap towards supranationalism. The EU is dominated by cooperation between national representatives and national officials yet it continually appears to us as something external and separate from national political life. This book takes on these paradoxes by arguing that European integration should no longer be studied as the transcendence of states or as merely an expression of national interests. Rather, we should approach it as a process of state transformation. This transformation is from nation-state to member state. The book explores in detail the concept of member state, arguing that it provides us with the best tool for understanding the European integration process. Member states differ from traditional nation-states. They are not founded on the idea of popular sovereignty or the nation. They rest upon the idea that the governance of domestic societies requires external frameworks of rule that can bind the hands of national politicians. National authority is thus exercised through external rules and norms. Member statehood differs from earlier forms of statehood because it rests upon a presumption of conflict between state and society rather than an identity of interests between ruler and ruled. The book outlines in empirical detail these mysteries and paradoxes of European integration. It then outlines in detail the theory and history of member statehood. It applies the concept of member state to the study of two EU policy areas: macro-economic governance and foreign and security policy.
