The 1980 Mariel Boatlift was a profound episode in twentieth-century American history, impacting not just Florida, but the entire country. During the first twenty days of the boatlift, with little support from the federal government, the state of Florida coordinated and responded to the sudden arrival in Key West of more than thirty thousand Cuban refugees, the first wave of immigrants who became known as “Marielitos.”Kathleen Dupes Hawk, Ron Villella, Adolfo Leyva de Varona, and Kristen Cifers combine the insights of expert observers with the experiences of actual participants. The authors organize and present a wealth of primary sources, first-hand accounts, archival research, government records, and interviews with policy-makers, volunteers, and refugees that bring into focus the many far-reaching human, political, and cultural outcomes of the Mariel Boatlift that continue to influence Florida, the United States, and Cuba today.Emerging from these key records and accounts is a grand narrative of high human drama. Castro’s haphazard and temporary opening of Cuba spurred many thousands of Cubans to depart in calamitously rushed, unprepared, and dangerous conditions. The book tells the stories of these Cuban citizens, most legitimately seeking political asylum but also including subversive agents, convicted criminals, and the mentally ill, who began arriving in the US beginning in April 1980. It also recounts how local and state agencies and private volunteers with few directives or resources were left to improvise ways to provide the Marielitos food, shelter, and security as well as transportation away from Key West. The book provides a definitive account of the political, legal, and administrative twists on the local, state, and federal levels in response to the crisis as well as of the often-dysfunctional attempts at collaboration between governmental and private institutions. Vivid and readable, Florida and the Mariel Boatlift of 1980 presents the significant details that illuminate and humanize this complex humanitarian, political, and logistical crisis.

This is his official biography written with the full cooperation of the Pythons and Chapman's partner David Sherlock - with full access to unseen pictures.Graham Chapman was the quiet, pipe-smoking Python who qualified as a doctor. He was the policeman's son whose tweed-jacketed demeanour belied his true anarchic nature. More than any other Python he lived the complete lunacy of the show. Chapman was John Cleese's writing partner from their early days at Cambridge Footlights right through the Monty Python years. But it was Chapman's off-screen antics that are closest to the surreal qualities of a Python sketch. Terry Gilliam remembers how he would go into a restaurant and suddenly disappear: "He'd be under somebody's table licking the girl's feet while her date was there!" Chapman was a founder member of an infamous drinking club with The Who's drummer, Keith Moon. Chapman had a wine cellar stuffed full with bottles of gin and at the height of his drinking - which started out as a nerve-calmer for performances - he would consume eight pints of gin a day. He fearlessly flaunted his homosexuality at a time when it was certainly not the done thing. To add further mix to his personal life, Chapman and his partner David Sherlock adopted a 14-year-old boy. Graham Chapman died in 1989 with brilliant comic timing on the eve of the 20th anniversary of the first recording of Python. A huge celebratory Python party was cancelled as a result and Terry Jones harrumphed Chapman's death as "the greatest act of party-pooping in history". Bob McCabe has had the full co-operation of Sherlock and the Pythons in writing this fascinating and revealing account of the life of one of British comedy's best-loved figures.

This small volume is a tribute to Robert John Mutton, universally known as Bob. His father, Eric John Mutton, self-published his memoirs in 2002. These were republished in 2012 and again in 2021. The last volume was an expanded Centenary Edition on the occasion of what would have been his 100th birthday. The previous year, we published a similar, albeit smaller edition for our mother, Irene Emily Louise Mutton. 2020 would have been her 100th birthday.Bob was born in 1947, so 2022 marked what would have been his 75th birthday. That year also marked 45 years since his passing, in Sydney, in 1977. For the benefit of family members and perhaps some old friends, this book presents the abbreviated story of his all-too-short life.It is fortunate that Eric did compile his memoirs, as Bob's early years might otherwise remain unknown to most people. We, his surviving brothers, were eight and 14 years younger. Our memories of Bob are therefore constrained by this timeframe.

This book provides the most accurate and most complete account of the evolution of King's Cross Central, one of Europe’s most successful, and most significant, urban regeneration projects. It is already the subject of considerable international interest, attracting the attention of planners, politicians and urban designers both at home and abroad. The four authors of this book all played key roles in the development of the project and together they describe how and why King’s Cross Central came about. Beginning by setting out King's Cross’s rich and complex history, the book then provides fascinating insights from the main protagonists, from initial concept, based on an innovative mixed-use approach based on ten guiding principles which set out the ‘human city’; through its evolution with various stakeholders involved; the complex negotiations regarding planning, conservation and financing; to the development and creation of the public spaces and landscapes and the selection of individual architects and buildings which, together with the renovation of historical buildings, has created King's Cross’s unique and successful character. Throughout, it is generously illustrated with historic photos and maps, drawings and diagrams, photographs recording the construction phase and specially commissioned graphics summarising key data and images of the site today.
Expansion and Fragmentation

Expansion and Fragmentation

Is the end of the nation-state approaching, now that the international economy takes less and less notice of borders between countries and the European Union has already acquired so much political power? What does national autonomy mean when governments delegate any number of powers to international organizations? Internationalization leads to political change, and the position of the nation-state appears to be undergoing a radical process of erosion. The surprising conclusion of this book is that the political significance of the state will not be lost. The analyses show that both expansion and fragmentation of political power are characteristics of fundamental political change. While it is true that the state is delegating authority and that internationalization is limiting autonomy, the state is also finding new forms of cooperation and coordination, both nationally and internationally, to preserve and even to strengthen its power and autonomy. Contrary to widely held assumptions, the idea of a progressive weakening of the nationstate does not prove tenable.

Can renewable energy provide reliable power? Will it need extensive backup? The energy available from wind, waves, tides and the sun varies in ways that may not match variations in energy demand. Assimilating these fluctuations can affect the operation and economics of electricity networks, markets and the output of other forms of generation. Is this a significant problem, or can these new sources be integrated into the grid system without the need for extensive backup or energy storage capacity? This book examines the significance of the issue of variability of renewable electricity supplies, and presents technical and operational solutions to the problem of reconciling the differing patterns of supply and demand. Its chapters are authored by leading experts in the field, who aim to explain and quantify the impacts of variability in renewable energy, and in doing so, dispel many of the myths and misunderstandings surrounding the topic.

Transforming Bible Study

The Word of God is alive--dynamic and powerful. Studying God's Word can transform your life. It knits you together with others. Revitalizes your relationships. Allows you to meet Christ for the first time as well as again and again. Studying the Bible can also be dry, dull--and seem to have little connection with your daily life. You've probably experienced group Bible study meetings in which the discussion is merely a chain of platitudes and people never say what they think or address the real questions they have about faith and life. Further, some approaches to Bible study require stacks of reference books, cross-referencing and three versions of the Bible. Other approaches ask you to fill in blanks like an elementary school child. What you need is a Bible study method that will bring Scripture to life in your personal study and in your group studies. In this book Bob Grahmann, a national and international Bible study teacher, unfolds a long-appreciated method of inductive Bible study which has been updated to meet the needs of today's generation. With both biblical expertise and cultural awareness he lays out the method clearly. With exercises to put the method into practice, this is a book that will benefit you individually as well as in your next group Bible study. It is time for your Bible study methods to be transformed. And it is time for you to allow the Bible to transform you. That?s what Transforming Bible Study is all about!
