Environmental Governance in Europe

Environmental Governance in Europe

Over the last thirty years, the European Union has created a system of environmental governance in Europe. With a large number of legislative measures, the EU's environmental policy is broad in scope, extensive in detail and often stringent in effect. Environmental governance also extends to the ways in which decision making on environmental policy has become institutionalized within Europe, both at the level of the EU itself and in the practices of the member states. This work seeks to understand this new system of environmental governance both at the European level and at the level of member states. It argues that the system is multi-level, horizontally complex, evolving and incomplete. Locating developments at the European level in theories of European integration, it goes on to examine the extent of convergence and divergence in environmental policy among six member states: Germany, Spain, Greece, Italy, the Netherlands, and the UK. It then looks at the operation of the system of environmental governance through an examination of policy case studies before examining the wider political significance of these developments.

LANI'S STORY is a moving, confronting and compelling account of a young woman's journey from victim to survivor. Escaping from a violent and unhappy relationship was just the first step for Lani-after that, she had to brave the courts, the police, and her community-but in the process she found love, hope and ultimately justice. This is a powerful and inspirational story of courage, determination and the importance of not accepting one's destiny. 'How one person can endure so much and then rise and be the incredible woman that she is today is a testament to how change comes from within. Lani reminds us how the spirit can fight, no matter how broken and bruised, to make a difference in this world.' Deborah Mailman A confronting and compelling account of a young woman's journey from victim to survivor. Raised in an urban Aboriginal community in Sydney, Lani had a childhood filled with love but alcoholism in her family left its scars. By thirteen, she was in a cycle of drug and alcohol abuse herself. then a relationship with a young man from her community trapped her in a situation that she almost didn't survive. Subjected to extreme physical and sexual violence at the hands of her partner, Lani finally knew she had only one choice: to leave him, or die. She escaped and got sober. But the past wouldn't leave her alone and she knew that to heal herself she had to speak out. Braving the police, the courts and her community, she stood up, determined to bring her abuser to justice.

Sparkle the Flying Unicorn, "A Christmas Story," is about a smart little girl named Trinitee Maree who had a vivid imagination. She was a daydreamer and a night visionary. She was amazed by the things that she could see from her bedroom window. She constantly sat at her window observing the things that surrounded her little village. Her little house sat on the hilltop of the village countryside and she had a clear view of the mountains, the tall trees, the village people below and the galaxy of stars in the sky at night. It was days before Christmas when it began to snow and Trinitee Maree's imagination started to expand. The little girl spent most of her time sitting at her bedroom window daydreaming or at night looking up at the stars. One night she saw a shooting star and made a wish just like her grandmother told her to do whenever she saw a shooting star. Trinitee Maree's wild imagination along with an unusual wish will have you smiling as you journey through this blissful Christmas Story.

Winner of the Coretta Scott King / John Steptoe New Talent Award, this acclaimed, multicultural book about a biracial boy with a passion for science will resonate with children everywhere who can't--or won't--be defined by categories. Ten-year-old Brendan Buckley is a self-declared scientist: asking questions and looking for answers, but most of all struggling against the overprotective behavior of his parents. Up until now, he has never even met his grandfather--the grandfather his mother won't even speak of. A chance encounter brings Brendan and his grandfather together where Brendan initiates a relationship with estranged grandfather, Ed DeBose. While they share a passion for geology, they do not share the color of their skin; Brendan's skin is brown, not pink like Ed DeBose's. Pretty soon, Brendan sets out to uncover the reason behind Ed's absence but soon discovers that family secrets can't be explained by science. A winner of the Coretta Scott King/John Steptoe New Talent Author Award, this is a novel about a boy learning about race relations and what it means to be a family. The War Between the States presents Brendan Bonneau with a choice between his loyalties to his family, owners of one of the largest and most profitable plantations in South Carolina, or his oath as an officer in the United States Navy. For maritime artifacts conservator Lillian Cherrington, life changes from the predictably mundane when her father reveals a long-held secret and makes a dying request. Using skills developed from years of revealing secrets buried beneath layers of history, she searches for the truth about their ancestor, a man who has been alternately honored or vilified by generations of their family since the last days of the Civil War.Lillian's quest takes her from dusty archives in Maryland, to the ruins of her family's plantation in South Carolina, to eighteenth-century rumrunner's dens on the island of Bermuda, where Lillian's search is complicated by love, threatened by smugglers, and thwarted by secrets kept and lies bequeathed for generations.
