C.S. Lewis and the Problem of God

C.S. Lewis and the Problem of God

David Werther

Cambridge University Press

pokkari
Understanding C.S. Lewis's vocation is essential for reading his works well, as is knowing how he came to it: his long and winding philosophical journey and reoccurring experiences of 'Joy.' Lewis discounted 'proofs' in philosophical theology but offered key arguments in support of theism per se, and Christianity in particular. His account of “mere Christianity” shows the centrality of self-determination, an emphasis on Christ's human nature, and a relativizing of atonement theories. Finally, Lewis's understanding of faith, his attempts to make sense of petitionary and imprecatory prayers, and his emphasis on theosis/deification, are considered.

Not every author can write about a wardrobe and a lion and end up delighting readers for generations. But then again, not every author is C.S. Lewis. This biographical picture book welcomes readers to get to know the man behind Aslan and Narnia and to experience the joy that inspired him. Young Clive Staples Lewis once loved imagination and play but was unable to trust God after the death of his mother. He left behind a belief in God and became an atheist and a professor. But he never stopped hoping to find joy. This unique picture book, narrated by a bespectacled owl, tells the tale of how the once reluctant Lewis slowly embraced Christianity, was surprised by joy, and then used his words and writings to share that joy with the world. Daniel DeWitt, author and C.S. Lewis scholar, summarizes the life of Lewis in a way that is engaging and inspiring. Young readers will walk away not only wanting to know more about the life and faith of Lewis but wanting to discover their own joy in Christ as well. C.S. Lewis: The Very Happy Christian is the second book in the Here I Am biography series for kids, which highlights fascinating and faithful Christians in history.

Why pursue a university education? Some people answer in terms of the purpose of getting a good job. Others respond in terms of the aim of earning more money. Still others answer in terms of the goal of promoting social justice. Drawing on C. S. Lewis’s belief that the purpose of life is the experience of perfect happiness, Stewart Goetz explains Lewis’s simple but overlooked view that a person should pursue a university education for the pleasure that comes from higher-level intellectual activity. Goetz not only sharpens our understanding of Lewis’s life and work in higher education, but also leads us to question why we attend, study, teach, or research at a university.
