Carrie Stevens (1882-1970) of upper Dam, Maine, created some of the most beautiful and enduring streamer patterns ever, including the legendary Gray Ghost, which she designed to catch the giant brook trout and landlocked salmon of the Rangeley Lakes. This long-awaited book is both a history of the woman and the region, as well as a guide to the Stevens method. It includes colour plates of original patterns, some only recently discovered, along with a biography illustrated with archival photos. The tying section lists dressings for more than 100 streamers, 65 of which have never been published.

Carrie Moyer consciously centres her painting as a practice about painting, with history as a subtext. Known for her incursions into Colour Field painting, Moyer also traces her influences to iconic female artists of the twentieth century, such as Georgia O Keeffe, and surrounding questions of taste, once quipping of her paintings that [Helen] Frankenthaler and [Fernand] Leger met in a dark corner and had Elizabeth Murray. Moyer s complex work merges abstract aesthetics and legible imagery: vividly coloured and textured forms are embedded with a range of historical, stylistic, and physical references to Surrealism, Modernism, 1960s and 70s counterculture graphics, and 70s feminist art. Moyer often works on the floor, pouring, rolling, stippling, mopping the paint, and embellishing with glitter. An exploration of acrylic s unique properties is a driving force in her work. Beginning as an intern at HERESIES, the pioneering feminist art magazine, Moyer has also engaged in critical practices beyond the studio. This monograph enriches a deep dive into Moyer s painting practice, in particular her work of the past decade, with a portfolio of the artist s agitprop from the 1990s, including Dyke Action Machine! (DAM!), one of the first lesbian public art projects.

Featuring photographs and films made between 2006 and 2015, Nine Trips around the Sun offers a survey of what Carrie Schneider (born 1979) describes as “documents of something performed for the camera,” and demonstrates the range of lens-based processes she has employed. Included is Schneider’s entrancing recent series Reading Women, for which the artist photographed and filmed 100 individual female artists, curators, writers and musicians in their homes and studios as they each read a book of their choosing by a woman author. The project resulted in 100 intimate portraits and a four-hour film. Published in conjunction with Schneider’s first comprehensive survey exhibition, this volume--the artist’s first monograph--includes essays by Julie Rodrigues Widholm and Joanna Szupinska-Myers, and an interview with the artist conducted by exhibition curator Kendra Paitz.

Carrie Fisher: A Life on the Edge

Carrie Fisher: A Life on the Edge

Sheila Weller

In her 2008 bestseller, Girls Like Us, Sheila Weller - with heart and a profound feel for the times - gave us a surprisingly intimate portrait of three icons: Carole King, Joni Mitchell, and Carly Simon. Now she turns her focus to one of the most loved, brilliant, and iconoclastic women of the modern age: the actress, writer, daughter, and mother Carrie Fisher. She traces Fisher’s life from her Hollywood royalty roots to her untimely and shattering death just days before Christmas 2016. Her mother was the seemingly idyllic Debbie Reynolds; her father, the famously ne’er-do-well Eddie Fisher (who runs off with Elizabeth Taylor). Weller exposes us to the demons that haunted Fisher all her life, particularly bipolar disorder and a drug addiction from which she could never quite free herself. We follow her career from her debut in Shampoo to the fame-making Star Wars; dive into her serious relationships with Paul Simon and the talent agent Bryan Lourd; witness her metamorphosis from actress to bestselling author; and watch her turn into a casual spokesperson for mental illness. Sourced by friends, colleagues, and witnesses to all stages of Fisher’s life, Carrie Fisher is an affectionate and even-handed portrayal of a woman whose unsurpassed honesty is a reminder of how things should be. This is a big book about a small woman with a larger-than-life spirit and impact.
