Modeling and Interpreting Interactive Hypotheses in Regression Analysis

Modeling and Interpreting Interactive Hypotheses in Regression Analysis

Social scientists study complex phenomena about which they often propose intricate hypotheses tested with linear-interactive or multiplicative terms. While interaction terms are hardly new to social science research, researchers have yet to develop a common methodology for using and interpreting them. Modeling and Interpreting Interactive Hypotheses in Regression Analysis provides step-by-step guidance on how to connect substantive theories to statistical models and how to interpret and present the results."Kam and Franzese is a must-have for all empirical social scientists interested in teasing out the complexities of their data."---Janet M. Box-Steffensmeier, Ohio State University"Kam and Franzese have written what will become the definitive source on dealing with interaction terms and testing interactive hypotheses. It will serve as the standard reference for political scientists and will be one of those books that everyone will turn to when helping our students or doing our work. But more than that, this book is the best text I have seen for getting students to really think about the importance of careful specification and testing of their hypotheses."---David A. M. Peterson, Texas A&M University"Kam and Franzese have given scholars and teachers of regression models something they've needed for years: a clear, concise guide to understanding multiplicative interactions. Motivated by real substantive examples and packed with valuable examples and graphs, their book belongs on the shelf of every working social scientist."---Christopher Zorn, University of South Carolina"Kam and Franzese make it easy to model what good researchers have known for a long time: many important and interesting causal effects depend on the presence of other conditions. Their book shows how to explore interactive hypotheses in your own research and how to present your results. The book is straightforward yet technically sophisticated. There are no more excuses for misunderstanding, misrepresenting, or simply missing out on interaction effects!"---Andrew Gould, University of Notre DameCindy D. Kam is Assistant Professor, Department of Political Science, University of California, Davis.Robert J. Franzese Jr. is Associate Professor, Department of Political Science, University of Michigan, and Research Associate Professor, Center for Political Studies, Institute for Social Research, University of Michigan. For datasets, syntax, and worksheets to help readers work through the examples covered in the book, visit: www.press.umich.edu/KamFranzese/Interactions.html

This Springer Brief provides theory, practical guidance, and support tools to help designers create complex, valid assessment tasks for hard-to-measure, yet crucial, science education standards. Understanding, exploring, and interacting with the world through models characterizes science in all its branches and at all levels of education. Model-based reasoning is central to science education and thus science assessment. Current interest in developing and using models has increased with the release of the Next Generation Science Standards, which identified this as one of the eight practices of science and engineering. However, the interactive, complex, and often technology-based tasks that are needed to assess model-based reasoning in its fullest forms are difficult to develop. Building on research in assessment, science education, and learning science, this Brief describes a suite of design patterns that can help assessment designers, researchers, and teachers create tasks for assessing aspects of model-based reasoning: Model Formation, Model Use, Model Elaboration, Model Articulation, Model Evaluation, Model Revision, and Model-Based Inquiry. Each design pattern lays out considerations concerning targeted knowledge and ways of capturing and evaluating students’ work. These design patterns are available at http://design-drk.padi.sri.com/padi/do/NodeAction?state=listNodes&NODE_TYPE=PARADIGM_TYPE. The ideas are illustrated with examples from existing assessments and the research literature.

The latest must-read book from the authors of the New York Times and Wall Street Journal Bestselling Aftershock series of books, Fake Money, Real Danger strips away the confusion and exposes what’s really happening to our economy and investments—and shows you what to do about it now, before it’s too late. Picking up where Aftershock left off, Fake Money, Real Danger reveals how the Covid-19 pandemic—and the government’s massive money printing and borrowing in response to it—is providing investors with a once in a lifetime opportunity to build wealth in the near term, while also taking the crucial steps necessary to protect yourself and your investments from the inevitable Fake Money bubble pop in the longer term. What FAKE MONEY? Massive government money printing increased the U.S. money supply by more than 1,000% since 2008, printing more money in ONE MONTH in 2020 than during the two years of the Financial Crisis in 2008 and 2009.Mammoth federal debt is now at a staggering $30 trillion—up $3 trillion in 2020 and on track for continuous huge increases. The amount of federal debt is nearing 10 times our annual tax revenues. What REAL DANGER? All U.S. economic growth since the Financial Crisis is entirely due to government borrowing. All of it. Without massive government borrowing we’d have no growth at all.Stock markets will likely continue to rise because of Fake Money but face an inevitable crisis when continued massive money printing creates serious inflation. You and every investor are now at a crossroads. Your next move will decide your fate: protection and profits OR wealth destruction and regret.
The Gradient Discretisation Method

The Gradient Discretisation Method

This monograph presents the Gradient Discretisation Method (GDM), which is a unified convergence analysis framework for numerical methods for elliptic and parabolic partial differential equations. The results obtained by the GDM cover both stationary and transient models; error estimates are provided for linear (and some non-linear) equations, and convergence is established for a wide range of fully non-linear models (e.g. Leray–Lions equations and degenerate parabolic equations such as the Stefan or Richards models). The GDM applies to a diverse range of methods, both classical (conforming, non-conforming, mixed finite elements, discontinuous Galerkin) and modern (mimetic finite differences, hybrid and mixed finite volume, MPFA-O finite volume), some of which can be built on very general meshes.

In 1934, the college became the Northeast Center of Louisiana State University, and in 1939, the name was changed to Northeast Junior College. In 1950, management of the college transferred from Louisiana State University to the State Board of Education, and the college became Northeast Louisiana State College. In 1970, to reflect the awarding of graduate degrees, the college became Northeast Louisiana University. In 1999, the school officially became the University of Louisiana Monroe. Since this institution first opened its doors in 1931, the name changes reflect its growth from a junior college to what has become a national and international university of choice for students.

Flexible Software Design

A developer's knowledge of a computing system's requirements is necessarily imperfect because organizations change. Many requirements lie in the future and are unknowable at the time the system is designed and built. To avoid burdensome maintenance costs developers must therefore rely on a system's ability to change gracefully-its flexibility. Flexible Software Design: Systems Development for Changing Requirements demonstrates the design principles and techniques that enable the design of software that empowers business staff to make functional changes to their systems with little or no professional IT intervention. The book concentrates on the design aspects of system development, the area with the most flexibility leverage. Divided into four parts, the text begins by introducing the fundamental concepts of flexibility, explaining the reality of imperfect knowledge and how development participants must change their thinking to implement flexible software. The second part covers design guidelines, stable identifiers, stable information structures, the Generic Entity Cloud concept, and regulatory mechanisms that give business staff control over system modifications. Part three relates strategic information systems planning to flexible systems. It examines the elicitation of requirements and the relevance of agile methods in a flexible systems environment. It also discusses practical aspects of stable identifier design and compares the testing of traditional and flexible software. In part four, the book concludes with details of the flexible UniverSIS system and an explanation of the applications and extensions of the Generic Entity Cloud tools. The combination of smart design and smart work offered in Flexible Software Design can materially benefit your organization by radically reducing the systems maintenance burden.

The U.S. Army has been and is struggling with sexual harassment, assault, and rape in its ranks, but the future can be different. In this monograph, three seasoned officers and one cadet propose a series of steps-based on West Point's experiences-to "get to the left" of these incidents by changing the cultural structures that allow them to occur. This will only become more critical as the Army works on the policies that will fully integrate women into the combat arms, introducing women to sub-cultures that have, for years, equated martial virtues with masculine ones.
