This is a special book. It is a special book because anyone who reads this anthology of soldiers stories across three generations of war will be profoundly moved by the courage, compassion, and selflessness of our men and women in uniform. As the title indicates, the stories in this volume span three generations of war of Kern County, California, veterans; yet their stories are universal, even timeless. They fought Hitler's Wehrmacht in France and Germany; shot down kamikazes off Okinawa in the Pacific theater; survived arctic cold and overwhelming odds at the Chosin Reservoir in Korea; served bravely in the the rice paddies and jungles of Vietnam (and as nurses in military hospitals); and, in more recent years, fought bitterly against the barbarism of al Qaeda terrorists in an inhospitable and alien Iraq. Anyone interested in the human face of war-the suffering, the sacrifice, the unwavering sense of duty-will find this book a most rewarding read.""Passing on stories of military service is as old as the Bible and Homer. Craig Luther, an experienced and respected military historian, continues this tradition with this collection of two dozen stories told by Kern County, California veterans. All share a common thread of service that binds all veterans, yet each narrative is unique as the people telling them. The reader will be touched, saddened, and at times amused, but will put the volume down with a sense of profound respect, and gratitude. This book is a valuable addition to local history, as well as to military history in general. I highly recommend it." Jonathan P. Roth, Professor of History, San Jose State University.

Fitz H. Lane: An Artist's Voyage Through Nineteenth-Century America

Fitz H. Lane s maritime masterpieces are known throughout the world, but the man himself has eluded both historians and art critics for over a century. The Luminist painter s successful career began in his early childhood in picturesque Gloucester, Massachusetts and his talents developed and matured over time, making him one of the nation s premier nineteenth-century artists. Throughout his career, Lane painted with a vitality and attention to detail that was purely American at heart, and it is in pursuit of this ideal that James Craig embarks on a detective s investigation to reconstruct with accuracy and honesty the details of a man about whom much has been written but little revealed. Few clues remain today about the artist who so thoroughly embodied the American spirit during one of humanity s most dramatic and confusing historical epochs. Lane s era was one of great change for America, and both he and his art were there to capture that spirit. This dazzling and exhaustive effort provides the first glimpse behind the canvas, beyond the career and into the soul of Fitz H. Lane. Passionate, stunning and thrilling, this is a narrative that returns life and color to a man intent or preserving and presenting the life of the culture he loved. James Craig has given Gloucester back one of her favorite sons."
One Man, One Medicine, One Health: The James H. Steele Story
The biography begins with Jim's birth and scrappy childhood in Chicago and takes the reader through his formal education to become a veterinarian at the Michigan State College and then earning a Master's in Public Health from Harvard. The reader is then taken through early work experiences, adventures in many countries engaging in and winning battles against deadly animal and human diseases, on through to his retirement from CDC in 1971 as the first U.S. Assistant Surgeon General for Veterinary Affairs. Family and personal experiences are weaved into the story to include real-life adventure, success, tragedy and humor. After leaving CDC, Dr. Steele began a prominent second career as a Professor of Environmental Health at the University of Texas, School of Public Health. There he compiled and edited the world's first comprehensive series of books on diseases shared by animals and man, the CRC Handbook Series on Zoonoses. At the ripe young age of 96, he continues to lecture, consult, mentor, advise, write, and inspire. The story of Jim Steele's life is stirring to us all, in and outside the allied health professions. He is a true pioneer in the evolving philosophy of One Medicine, One Health, One World. He has been called by many of his colleagues, The Father of Veterinary Public Health.
And I Still Hate the Army - Discovering the Hidden Life (and War) of My Grandfather, Elliott H. Wells
Elliott H. Wells kept a journal of his life from his induction into the U.S. Army National Guard in New Hampshire to his country's declaration of war to the Axis powers in 1941. His grandson, Matthew Craig, deciphered his handwriting, and resurrected this journal from decades of intentional interment. Mr. Craig preserved all of Mr. Wells' entries and provided insight into some of the expressions and references to daily military life of that era. He also furnished context, based on his research in a number of sources, regarding the status of military operations during the remaining period of Mr. Wells' service in Australia and New Guinea. Mr. Wells' silence during the period of war service may be more eloquent than his written account of his activities leading up to the war. Mr. Craig's enormous affection for his grandfather underlies these pages, while not being described in detail. Includes: 13 Photographs

To call Jim Steele "just" a veterinarian is like saying Bill Gates is "just" a software engineer. During his one hundred years of life, Steele changed the face of veterinary medicine and public health. As the first US assistant surgeon general for veterinary affairs at the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta, he pioneered the simple but powerful philosophy that human health is intimately connected to the health of animals and our surrounding environment. His unwavering convictions, passion for medical progress, and strong leadership have saved and enriched countless human and animal lives. Animal Health Human Health One Health recounts Jim Steele's remarkable story, bringing to life his rough-and-tumble childhood in Chicago, his veterinary and academic career, countless battles with deadly diseases, public health adventures around the globe, creation of the first comprehensive scientific book series on zoonotic diseases, and his final years when he was still speaking, coauthoring scientific articles and books, and mentoring and advising students, colleagues and world leaders. He was the father of Veterinary Public Health and a motivator to all who met him. His life story is a great inspiration for anyone with curiosity and passion for the health, life and environmental sciences.
