Morality and the Market (Routledge Revivals)
Can businesses abandon the axiom that the customer is always right when consumers start questioning the ethics of business practices? Professor Craig Smith examines the theory and practice of ethical purchase behaviour, a crucial mechanism for ensuring social responsibility in business. He explains how and why consumers have used their purchasing power to influence corporate policies and practices. He argues the case for the social control of business, drawing on perspectives from marketing, economics, politics, sociology, and business policy. He concludes that the market may act as an arbiter of ‘good’ and ‘bad’ business practice. Dr Smith considers the practical aspects of ethical purchase behaviour, focusing on consumer boycotts as a specific form of this consumer behaviour, and explains how boycotted businesses should respond. This title, first published in 1990, is ideal for both business students and those who have a business of their own.

Inside the Presidential Debates

Inside the Presidential Debates

Newton N. Minow; Craig L. LaMay; Vartan Gregorian

Newton Minow's long engagement with the world of television began nearly fifty years ago when President Kennedy appointed him chairman of the Federal Communications Commission. As its head, Minow would famously dub TV a vast wasteland, thus inaugurating a career dedicated to reforming television to better serve the public interest. Since then, he has been chairman of PBS and on the board of CBS and elsewhere, but his most lasting contribution remains his leadership on televised presidential debates. He was assistant counsel to Illinois governor Adlai Stevenson when Stevenson first proposed the idea of the debates in 1960; he served as cochair of the presidential debates in 1976 and 1980; and he helped create and is currently vice chairman of the Commission on Presidential Debates, which has organized the debates for the last two decades. Written with longtime collaborator Craig LaMay, this fascinating history offers readers for the first time a genuinely inside look into the origins of the presidential debates and the many battles both legal and personal that have determined who has been allowed to debate and under what circumstances. The authors do not dismiss the criticism of the presidential debates in recent years but do come down solidly in favor of them, arguing that they are one of the great accomplishments of modern American electoral politics. As they remind us, the debates were once unique in the democratic world, are now emulated across the globe, and they offer the public the only real chance to see the candidates speak in direct response to one another in a discussion of major social, economic, and foreign policy issues. Looking to the challenges posed by third-party candidates and the emergence of new media such as YouTube, Minow and LaMay ultimately make recommendations for the future, calling for the debates to become less formal, with candidates allowed to question each other and citizens allowed to question candidates directly. They also explore the many ways in which the Internet might serve to broaden the debates' appeal and informative power. Whether it's Clinton or Obama vs. McCain, Inside the Presidential Debates will be welcomed in 2008 by anyone interested in where this crucial part of our democracy is headed and how it got there.
The Road to Love Canal

The Road to Love Canal

Craig E. Colten; Peter N. Skinner

University of Texas Press

pokkari
The toxic legacy of Love Canal vividly brought the crisis in industrial waste disposal to public awareness across the United States and led to the passage of the Superfund legislation in 1980. To discover why disasters like Love Canal have occurred and whether they could have been averted with knowledge available to waste managers of the time, this book examines industrial waste disposal before the formation of the Environmental Protection Agency in 1970.Colten and Skinner build their study around three key questions. First, what was known before 1970 about the hazards of certain industrial wastes and their potential for causing public health problems? Second, what were the technical capabilities for treating or containing wastes during that time? And third, what factors other than technical knowledge guided the actions of waste managers before the enactment of explicit federal laws? The authors find that significant information about the hazards of industrial wastes existed before 1970. Their explanations of why this knowledge did not prevent the toxic legacy now facing us will be essential reading for environmental historians and lawyers, public health personnel, and concerned citizens.

Advanced and Multivariate Statistical Methods, Seventh Edition provides conceptual and practical information regarding multivariate statistical techniques to students who do not necessarily need technical and/or mathematical expertise in these methods. This text has three main purposes. The first purpose is to facilitate conceptual understanding of multivariate statistical methods by limiting the technical nature of the discussion of those concepts and focusing on their practical applications. The second purpose is to provide students with the skills necessary to interpret research articles that have employed multivariate statistical techniques. Finally, the third purpose of AMSM is to prepare graduate students to apply multivariate statistical methods to the analysis of their own quantitative data or that of their institutions.New to the Seventh EditionAll references to SPSS have been updated to Version 27.0 of the software.A brief discussion of practical significance has been added to Chapter 1.New data sets have now been incorporated into the book and are used extensively in the SPSS examples. All the SPSS data sets utilized in this edition are available for download via the companion website.Additional resources on this site include several video tutorials/walk-throughs of the SPSS procedures. These "how-to" videos run approximately 5–10 minutes in length.Advanced and Multivariate Statistical Methods was written for use by students taking a multivariate statistics course as part of a graduate degree program, for example in psychology, education, sociology, criminal justice, social work, mass communication, and nursing.

Adolescence is a challenging time for both children and adults. Children start to find their own way and undergo significant changes. Adults struggle with how to best raise them during these trying years. Helping Teenagers Become Successful and Responsible Adults gives parents and other adults who work with children an easy-to-read guide to help them navigate this period in children's lives. It informs parents about what their teenagers are going through, what risks their children will face, and what they can do to help. Mostly, it stresses what teenagers need in order to become responsible adults-specifically, interaction with those who are already responsible and caring adults. Society is changing rapidly. Parents often feel overwhelmed by life's demands and compete with so much-including electronic devices-as they vie for their children's attention. Parents might also feel quick to judge and castigate when teens misbehave. But when it seems that adolescents least deserve and don't seem to want a parent's love, that's when they need it the most. Dr. Emilio J. Dominguez, a psychoanalyst, and Lizabeth Craig, a nurse and author, give parents what they need to know: how to understand what their teens are experiencing and what they require.

Regardless of the grace of their movement, dancers experience injuries more often than the lugs bucking heads on the rugby field or in the boxing ring. On average, dancers are only marginally fitter than the average person on the street, smoke far too much, and do not eat properly, yet still stretch their bodies to extreme levels in the name of performance, and not surprisingly suffer a litany of injuries. This book examines the impact of a variety of dance forms, and puts forth a program for improving training, building stamina, and reducing the risk of injury.
