A Sermon Preach'd at the Funeral of the Reverend John Hughes, A.M. Fellow of Jesus-College, Cambridge, ... by Tho. Croft, ...
The 18th century was a wealth of knowledge, exploration and rapidly growing technology and expanding record-keeping made possible by advances in the printing press. In its determination to preserve the century of revolution, Gale initiated a revolution of its own: digitization of epic proportions to preserve these invaluable works in the largest archive of its kind. Now for the first time these high-quality digital copies of original 18th century manuscripts are available in print, making them highly accessible to libraries, undergraduate students, and independent scholars. The Age of Enlightenment profoundly enriched religious and philosophical understanding and continues to influence present-day thinking. Works collected here include masterpieces by David Hume, Immanuel Kant, and Jean-Jacques Rousseau, as well as religious sermons and moral debates on the issues of the day, such as the slave trade. The Age of Reason saw conflict between Protestantism and Catholicism transformed into one between faith and logic -- a debate that continues in the twenty-first century.++++The below data was compiled from various identification fields in the bibliographic record of this title. Michael Vaux, ex-journalist and occasional MI6 operative, is back. The reluctant hero of The Wayward Spy and Operation Saladin is about to find himself pulled back into the violent world of espionage and counterterrorism. After a high-ranking member of al-Qaeda in the Muslim Maghreb terrorist group expresses a desire to defect, MI6 can't afford to ignore his request. The information he holds could help prevent future terrorist attacks. An envoy is sent from Morocco to negotiate a deal with MI6. But on his return, while under the protection of novice agent Sebastian Micklethwait, the envoy is assassinated en route, and MI6 calls on Vaux to locate and secure the would-be defector. Finding the al-Qaeda operative on the dusty Moroccan streets proves difficult, especially when Micklethwait is abducted outside a Tangier nightclub. Now Vaux has to find both men, with ever-increasing pressure from the home office and uncooperative CIA agents. Vaux's search will culminate in a bloody confrontation-and have repercussions that could place MI6 security in grave peril. A dizzying maze of shifting alliances and constant deceit, nothing is as it seems in The Maghreb Conspiracy.

A Croft in the Hills, first published in 1960, is now acknowledged as a classic among Highland books. It captures, in simple, moving descriptions, what it was really like trying to make a living out of a hill croft near Loch Ness fifty years ago. A couple and their young daughter, fresh from city life, immerse themselves in the practicalities of looking after sheep, cattle and hens, mending fences, baking bread and surviving the worst that Scottish winters can throw at them. Their neighbours are few, but among them they find the generosity and community spirit that has survived in the Highlands for generations. Working as a tight family unit, they learn to cope, and in time grow to love their little croft.

This is a work of "faction" based on the life of the author's great great grandfather, John Croft (1807-1883), who was born in Hertfordshire, England, served as a young officer in the British East India Company Army during the First Anglo-Burmese War (1824-1826), became one of Australia's wealthiest men (1843-1859), then returned to England as a landed gentleman who married into a prominent family of industrialists, the Garretts. In this, book one of a planned trilogy, John Croft graduates from the Addiscombe Military Seminary in England at the age of sixteen, sails to Madras, India, where he witnesses the burning of "suttees," thence to Rangoon, Burma. In Burma, as an officer in the Royal Madras Fusiliers/His Majesty's 102nd Foot, he experiences two years of fierce combat pitting British explosive artillery shells and Congreve rockets against Burmese King Bagyidaw's formidable General Maha Bandula and his 60,000-man army equipped with battle elephants. He is billeted in a bamboo house in Rangoon and unexpectedly meets its owners, who are disciples of pioneer American Baptist missionaries, Rev. Adoniram and Ann Hasseltine Judson. He engages in an effort to free the Rev. Adoniram Judson from King Bagyidaw's cruel imprisonment and finds love with Burma's first woman convert to Christianity.

On a crisp January breeze, a new girl sweeps into the neighborhood, breathing life - and perhaps a hint of magic - into the cottage she christens Elderberry Croft. The folks at The Coach House Trailer Park can't help but fall under Willow Goodhope's spell as she charms them with her vibrant nature, her elderberry gifts, and her outrageous laughter. But there's something about her, a secret sadness that hovers at the corners of her irrepressible smile, and it has everyone talking. What brings the mysterious young woman to this dead end place? From what-or whom-is she hiding? Doc catches her burning letters in her stone fire pit, and Myra swears Willow drinks alone out in the moonlight. Joe glimpses the whispering shadows clinging to the girl's coat tails, and Patti is certain the young beauty is after her husband. Eddie and Donny compete to see who can make her smile first...even though both figure she'd prefer her men with good jobs, good homes, and good teeth. Kathy is doing everyone a favor by keeping a close eye on the wild child next door. Through her binoculars. And what she sees doesn't sit well with any of them. Elderberry Croft is the inspirational tale of one woman's journey toward hope, and the people whose lives she transforms along the way. If you like clean and wholesome women's fiction and books like Garden Spells, The School of Essential Ingredients, or In the Light of the Garden, you'll love Elderberry Croft. Read more in Elderberry Days: Season of Joy the holiday sequel to Elderberry Croft: Seasons of the Heart.
