Creative Insecurity

The Middle East is experiencing the world's most prominent youth bulge. Yet many MENA economies' institutional designs, both formal and informal, favour the power of business elites, systematically discriminating against young people joining the workforce or opening businesses, and thus limiting their ability to contribute to innovation. Large youth populations can be a boon or a curse: nurtured and integrated, they can jumpstart stratospheric growth; but if alienated and confined, they can drain a society politically and economically. The Gulf Cooperation Council countries are no exception to this perilous dilemma. This book explores the problem through a new concept, 'creative insecurity': a state's subjection to an institutional ecosystem that is suppressing opportunities for innovation--to the extent that it is causing economic and political vulnerabilities, which in turn threaten national security. Creative insecurity threatens the longevity of many states today. In this original, incisive study, Dania Thafer argues that GCC member-states should make it a national security imperative to cash in their demographic dividend, by averting the deleterious effects of ill-disposed elite politics. Investing in an innovation ecosystem that harnesses the talent of the youth majority will be crucial for the GCC's successful transition to the post-oil era.

"The sheer brilliance and sprezzatura of Quinn Jackson's ideas, and his ability to articulate these in fluid, gorgeous, and startlingly original prose and poetry, will capture and hold your attention."-Dania Sheldon, editor of Touched by Fortune's ShadowVancouver, 1998. From his mountain-view Coal Harbor penthouse, Brett Lloyd-Ronan leads a quiet, highly ordered life as co-founder and chief analyst of a thriving quantitative analysis firm. Born into a blue-collar world where opportunity rarely came knocking, he has made patterns and predictability his twin anchors while using his distinctive intellect and skills to navigate the chaotic seas of trading, portfolio hedging, and market modeling. But when the woman he has loved from afar over many years reappears and sails into his sheltered cove, Brett finds that his days will never again begin the same way twice. And the patterns become even more elaborately unpredictable as a retired concert pianist challenges Brett to make abstractions real, and to speak and act when silence and caution may feel safer.Touched by Fortune's Shadow: a triptych is a work of tranquil turmoil. While Brett has found sanctuary and wealth in the fiscal world of risk and margin, at life's heart remain human relationships in which interests and emotions sometimes align, sometimes collide, and never conform to logic. Will Brett, like the Huma bird of legend, remain perpetually in auspicious flight? Or is there a place of truth where he can land and be his fully authentic self?

This novel is based on the true story of the author's relationship with a charming imposter. Anni Mills lived a comfortable, fulfilling life. Then, cancer struck. Both she and her daughter, who was in the prime of her life, received the same damning diagnosis. Under a guise of empathy and adoration, a Dutch 'academic' moved into her life, only to benefit financially from her generosity and grief over the loss of her daughter. Following his abrupt departure, evidence led Anni to other women around the world who were similarly misled by this charlatan. They began to blog -- with wisdom, wit, feistiness and resilience -- about his web of deceit.

This book provides an analysis of Latinidad in Latin American and U.S. Latinx films by women and/or LGBTQ directors from 1991 to 2016. Challenging traditional notions of gender roles, family, and national identities, it discusses how film directors are broadening the canon and producing provocative work that challenges the boundaries of identity. Utilizing a feminist and queer lens, this book is intended to demonstrate the dynamic interactions between individual agency, choices, and freedom from the communities represented. The book's organization in three parts reflects a common core of the Latin American and U.S. Latinx experiences, unifying all these films in the hope of creating a better understanding of these geographical regions and their people.

This brief investigates the role of interference management in Heterogeneous Networks (Het Nets), focusing on cognitive approaches and the use of beamforming. Key concepts of Het Nets are introduced and different deployment strategies are examined, such as sharing the same frequency band of the macro cells or using new high frequency bands. Particular attention is devoted to co-channel deployment and to the problem of interference management, addressing various strategies that can be adopted to handle the interference between the cells. In addition, the brief explores cognitive small cells which are able to avoid or limit interference by using suitable beamforming and resource allocation schemes. The suggested solutions are supported by numerical results in terms of performance evaluations and comparisons.

This book examines the water-related impacts of climate change in the UNESCO Intercontinental Biosphere Reserve of the Mediterranean (IBRM) straddling Spain and Morocco. This is the first in-depth publication on a fascinating transboundary case study; while climate change effects are rather homogenous across the IBRM, differing socio-economic contexts, land-use patterns and policy frameworks in Spain and Morocco mean considerable variations in vulnerability and consequences for human security. The authors have produced a novel and integrated vulnerability assessment that combines hydro-ecological, socio-economic and policy analyses. The interdisciplinary approach and insights contained in this volume will appeal both to those interested in the integration of natural and social sciences as well as those working on water and climate change from academic, practical or policy-oriented perspectives.
