The authors critically review memory research, trauma treatment, and legal cases pertaining to the false memory controversy. They discuss current memory science and research with both children and adults, pointing out where findings are and are not generalizable to trauma memories recovered in psychotherapy. The main issues in the recovered memory debate are covered, as well as research on emotion and memory, autobiographical memory, flashbulb memory, memory for trauma, and types of suggestions, such as misinformation suggestions, social persuasion, interrogatory suggestions, and brainwashing. Research on the reliability of memories recovered in hypnosis is reviewed and guidelines for using hypnosis with patients reporting no, partial, or full memory of having been sexually abused are outlined. The authors review the development and current practice of phase-oriented trauma treatment and present a standard of care that is effective and ethical. Their exploration of memory in the legal context includes a review of malpractice liability and current malpractice cases for allegedly implanting false memories in therapy, as well as the evolving law around legal actions by people who have recovered memories and around hypnosis and memory recovery. This is an essential reference on memory for all clinicians, researchers, attorneys, and judges.

nidottu
Global warming and climate change present complex interlocking issues of public policy, multilateral negotiation, and technological advancement. This book explores both the problems and the opportunities presented by international agreements, and examines the technological developments and policy goals that can be pursued to effect the changes necessary. Specific steps are proposed in the form of a list of priorities. This book represents a cooperative enterprise between two authors of different backgrounds - engineering and international relations - and is directed to an educated but non-professional lay audience without any formal training in either science or international relations. The points of view of negotiators from both developed and developing nations are presented and compared. Each topic is presented from both technical and policy perspectives as a means to evaluate the variety of proposals that have been offered as remedies to global warming. The text is supported by illustrations and tables where appropriate, including a list of References at the end of each chapter.
American Criminal Justice Policy

American Criminal Justice Policy

Daniel P. Mears

American Criminal Justice Policy examines many of the most prominent criminal justice policies on the American landscape and finds that they fall well short of achieving the accountability and effectiveness that policymakers have advocated and that the public expects. The policies include mass incarceration, sex offender laws, supermax prisons, faith-based prisoner reentry programs, transfer of juveniles to adult court, domestic violence mandatory arrest laws, drug courts, gun laws, community policing, private prisons, and others. Optimistically, Daniel P. Mears argues that this situation can be changed through systematic incorporation of evaluation research into policy development, monitoring, and assessment. To this end, the book provides a clear and accessible discussion of five types of evaluation - needs, theory, implementation or process, outcome and impact, and cost-efficiency. It identifies how these can be used both to hold the criminal justice system accountable and to increase the effectiveness of crime control and crime prevention efforts.

Meta says, this book is a drug for the dreams for everything and nothing. It is a claim on your mind as reliable as the wiki-myths and legends I designed 7 years ago. It is the best dang trip you'll ever see. It's living hallucinations so intoxicating it will leave you breathless.

The Panzer Killers

A general-turned-historian reveals the remarkable battlefield heroics of Major General Maurice Rose, the World War II tank commander whose 3rd Armored Division struck fear into the hearts of Hitler's panzer crews. "The Panzer Killers is a great book, vividly written and shrewdly observed."--The Wall Street Journal Two months after D-Day, the Allies found themselves in a stalemate in Normandy, having suffered enormous casualties attempting to push through hedgerow country. Troops were spent, and American tankers, lacking the tactics and leadership to deal with the terrain, were losing their spirit. General George Patton and the other top U.S. commanders needed an officer who knew how to break the impasse and roll over the Germans--they needed one man with the grit and the vision to take the war all the way to the Rhine. Patton and his peers selected Maurice Rose. The son of a rabbi, Rose never discussed his Jewish heritage. But his ferocity on the battlefield reflected an inner flame. He led his 3rd Armored Division not from a command post but from the first vehicle in formation, charging headfirst into a fight. He devised innovative tactics, made the most of American weapons, and personally chose the cadre of young officers who drove his division forward. From Normandy to the West Wall, from the Battle of the Bulge to the final charge across Germany, Maurice Rose's deadly division of tanks blasted through enemy lines and pursued the enemy with a remarkable intensity. In The Panzer Killers, Daniel P. Bolger, a retired lieutenant general and Iraq War veteran, offers up a lively, dramatic tale of Rose's heroism. Along the way, Bolger infuses the narrative with fascinating insights that could only come from an author who has commanded tank forces in combat. The result is a unique and masterful story of battlefield leadership, destined to become a classic.

Setting: Virginia in the 1930s. Twin sisters, the Ravens, one blind (Alisha), the other beautiful and pampered (Jenny), vie for their mother's affection. A double wedding ceremony results in terror and death. Shortly thereafter, Jenny is confined to a home for the insane: Gristmoor, a place where the evil Dr. Braun intimidates and seduces her patients. In attending to Jenny, Sizemore, Braun's half witted lackey, makes an error in judgement and soon Jenny is dead. But buried with her in the stench of her grave is a mysterious blue liquid that Sizemore tells Braun "bring the dead back to life." Braun ignores his admonition. Dr. Borman, lead psychiatrist at Gristmoor, is suspicious of the strange goings on at the institution and begins to quietly investigate the abuse of several inmates and the death of Jenny Raven. Things at Gristmoor begin to stir from the crypt and a new and metamorphosed Jenny rises to seek revenge on her sightless sister and all the others who have caused her such pain while among the living. Braun and Sizemore meet their deaths quickly. Detective Maurice Goodman is on the scene first and his suspicions are soon aroused by the baffling deaths of Braun and Sizemore, and he turns his attention to Borman. Other deaths connected with weddings follow, some as far away as Pennsylvania. Borman, linking various clues, believes that a supernatural "creature" is despoiling the country side. Convincing a reluctant Goodman of this fact, they join forces in tracking the thing down. Alisha, not surprised, has had many real and dreamy encounters with her demonic sister—Alisha being her prime target. As Jenny seeks her revenge the chase leads to the Outer Banks of North Carolina as the horror culminates in several deaths and resolution.
