Il libro presenta i risultati di un progetto universitario il cui obiettivo generale era identificare e caratterizzare i paesaggi e il potenziale multifunzionale delle piccole aziende agricole del distretto rurale di Itap - Rio Claro (SP). A tal fine, il quadro teorico si basato su quattro elementi analitici: paesaggio rurale / multifunzionalit / elementi esterni all'agricoltura / sviluppo rurale endogeno (DINIZ, 1984, p.30 apud FERREIRA, p.50). Per caratterizzare gli attributi fisici del paesaggio del quartiere, stata condotta un'indagine su materiale bibliografico e cartografico, nonch sui dati pluviometrici, che ha permesso di individuare le condizioni naturali dell'area. Attraverso la ricerca diretta con l'osservazione sul campo e l'applicazione di questionari, si cercato di raccogliere dati socio-economici e anche le risorse turistiche e paesaggistiche esistenti nell'area che permettono di sviluppare attivit agricole e/o extra-agricole come alternative di occupazione e reddito. L'obiettivo era quello di comprendere i limiti e le difficolt in termini di aspetti socio-economici, infrastrutture e attributi fisici del paesaggio che influenzano lo sviluppo delle famiglie locali.
