The Jones-Imboden Raid

When Virginia seceded from the United States in 1861, its western counties showed very little popular support for the Confederacy, and loyalist bands of bushwhackers, partisans and guerillas drove most Southern sympathizers from the region. Most inconvenient for the Confederacy was the fact that these counties (which later would become West Virginia) housed the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, which connected Washington with the Midwest's vast wealth of manpower and supplies. This work covers the Confederacy's 1863 attempt to invade West Virginia and destroy the critical B&O line. Rich with oral history, the book gives a detailed, personal account of the ultimately unsuccessful Jones-Imboden Raid.

The Continuing Conversion of the Church

The Continuing Conversion of the Church

Western society is now a very different, very difficult mission field. In such a situation, the mission of evangelism cannot succeed with an attitude of -business as usual.- This volume builds a theology of evangelism that has its focus on the church itself. Darrell Guder shows that the church's missionary calling requires that the theology and practice of evangelism be fundamentally rethought and redirected, focused on the continuing evangelization of the church so that it can carry out its witness faithfully in today's world. In Part 1 Guder explores how, under the influence of reductionism and individualism, the church has historically moved away from a biblical theology of evangelism. Part 2 presents contemporary challenges to the church's evangelical ministry, especially those challenges that illustrate the church's need for continuing conversion. Part 3 discusses what a truly missional theology would mean for the church, including sweeping changes in its institutional structures and practices. Written for teachers, church leaders, and students of evangelism, this volume is vital reading for everyone engaged in mission work.

Since the publication of the groundbreaking volume Missional Church in 1998, there has been wide-ranging engagement with the missional church theme. In this book Darrell Guder builds on that ongoing discussion by considering basic theological issues that must be addressed if the church is to be faithful to its calling to serve God as Christ's witnessing people. Guder argues that there are major consequences for every classical theological locus if the fundamental claims of the missional church discussion are acknowledged. In Called to Witness Guder delves into these consequences, saying that we need to keep doing missional theology until it is possible to leave off the "missional scaffolding" because, after all, mission defines the very essence and calling of the church.

This book is NOT recommended for casual reading for pleasure, but is written for those readers who possess a strong desire to know the truth from the source of truth, even the Holy Bible. There are many groups in the traditional Christian world that claim to teach truth, but only one can rightfully make this claim. All other groups must be considered false for having only a part of the truth. The Holy Spirit teaches the whole truth which comes from the one and only Source of truth, even our Heavenly Father, Who speaks to His Holy Prophet to all the world. In the traditional Christian world of our day we find many different versions of doctrine. The heavens cannot be responsible for this utter confusion. For example, there are many different forms of baptism, an ordinance of salvation. This book is divided into four parts: Part 1: The Cracks in the Foundation of Tradition, reviews the absence of correspondence between many doctrines of today's Christian world at large and the source of gospel truth, even the Holy Bible. The standard laid down by the Apostle Paul is "One Lord, one faith, one baptism", yet there are over 2,000 different faiths, ordinances of baptism that don't correspond to biblical example and some who say baptism isn't even required. There are countless claims to priesthood authority, none of which can trace the origin of this authority to Jesus Christ as is required in Acts 1:21-22. Puny man cannot give himself authority to act in the name of God. It stands to reason that God need do this for Himself by personal appearance and/or appearances of His servants. Part Two: Gospel Truth Helps Us to Keep the Commandments, shows how some of the popular doctrines in traditional Christianity are not supportive of the admonition to show love for the Savior by keeping His commandments (John 14:15). For example: the world no longer keeps the Sabbath Day holy. So too, faithful Christians are taught to revere a deity that is not described in biblical text. Part Three: Two Kingdoms: How Do We Tell Them Apart?, discusses the differences between the true kingdom of God on the Earth and the the other kingdom, a concoction of religious creeds which have been initiated by mankind alone, in good faith, yet without claim to or support from the God of heaven. Part Four: Rebuilding the House: discussed the efforts made by the God of the universe to restore His true gospel doctrines and authority to His children. Many discoveries suggest that events of the Book of Mormon would have been unknown to Joseph Smith, Jr. if the book were fiction. The Church established by this man was under the direction of the Lord Jesus Christ whose name is a part of the name of the Church and He claims it as His own. The only Church on Earth so claimed. When the Church was in its infancy, the prophet Joseph Smith gathered the entire priesthood leadership of the Church into a one-room cabin 14 feet square. In this meeting he made the claim that this Church would spread from this humble beginning to spread throughout the whole earth. This would have been the claim of an charlatan were it not supported by the God of heaven Who brought about literal fulfillment. After nearly 20 years of study in response to admonitions of leaders of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and a marvelous blessing received by the author in 1972: "Prepare your mind through a prayerful and conscientious study of the scriptures and as you do so, your tongue will be loosed and you will be able to speak with power, even as a Savior on Mount Zion, unto the convincing of many souls". This book is proof of the efforts on the author's part to prepare his mind, and the literal fulfillment of a promise made by the Lord of heaven to one of His faithful children. The objective of this book is to prove that a drift ibn basic doctrines of salvation, even the truth, taught by Jesus Christ to the men He called and prepared to carry on His work has occurred.
Guidelines for Investigating Officer-Involved Shootings, Arrest-Related Deaths, and Deaths in Custody
As unrest over officer-involved shootings and deaths in custody takes center stage in conversations about policing and the criminal justice system, Guidelines for Investigating Officer-Involved Shootings, Arrest-Related Deaths, and Deaths in Custody addresses critical investigation components from an expert witness perspective, providing the insights necessary to ensure a complete investigation. Investigating a custodial death or an officer involved in a shooting presents unique and complex issues: estate, community, judicial, agency, involved officer, and public policy interests are all at stake. These types of deaths present various emerging medical, psychological, legal and liability, technical, and investigatory issues that must be addressed through a comprehensive investigation. This book is ideal for students in criminal investigation, death investigation, crime scene investigation, and special topic courses in custodial deaths and officer-involved shootings, as well as for death investigators, law enforcement officers, police administrators, and attorneys.

The Army of Tennessee was officially designated November 20, 1862. But that was not the beginning of the Confederate main fighting force in the Civil War's Western Theater. Before that date it was known as the Army of Mississippi (or the Army of the West), a command organized on March 5, with its area of operations between the Mississippi River and the Appalachian Mountains. That army was formed of the Army of Central Kentucky, the Army of Louisiana and elements of the Army of Pensacola, following the Confederate disaster at Fort Donelson. The force was led by a succession of commoners--P.G.T. Beauregard, Albert Sydney Johnston and Braxton Bragg--and had a series of defeats, from Shiloh to Corinth to Perryville, before winning a spectacular victory at Chickamauga. Based on the Official Records, this book details the often neglected army's organization, strength and casualties during its three year history.
