Art, Myth and Society in Hegel's Aesthetics

Art, Myth and Society in Hegel's Aesthetics returns to the student transcripts of Hegel's lectures on aesthetics, which have yet to be translated into English and in some cases remain unpublished. David James develops the idea that these transcripts show that Hegel was primarily interested in understanding art as an historical phenomenon and, more specifically, in terms of its role in the ethical life of various peoples. This involves relating Hegel's aesthetics to his philosophies of right and history, rather than to his logic or metaphysics. The book thus offers a thorough re-evaluation of Hegel's aesthetics and its relation to his theory of objective spirit, exposing the ways in which Hegel's views on this subject are anchored in his reflections on history and on different forms of ethical life.
Letters From Slovakia: A Humorous Account Of An Englishman Living In The Slovak Republic
Letters From Slovakia is a glimpse of what life was like, for an Englishman at least, in the Slovak Republic; some years on from the Velvet Revolution and the Velvet Divorce, but still prior to the country joining NATO and the European Union. David James describes life in Slovakia through a collection of letters, which give an account of his personal experiences living in this beautiful little country in the heart of Europe. The letters give a wonderful insight into the society and culture of the Slovak Republic at that time. The Letters From Slovakia begin with David's first encounter with the Slovak Republic, in the summer of 1997, and continue until the close of his second year living in the country, towards the end of 2003. The thirteen letters cover a range of subjects, including the following: - "An Invitation To The Embassy" - Join David at a champagne reception in the Slovak Embassy, in London. - "The Journey From Hell" - David's first ever trip to Slovakia. - "The Heart Of Europe" - A visit to the geographic center of Europe. - "From Morava With Love" - A trip across the border to the Czech Republic. - "Easter Traditions" - The "freshening" of women on Easter Monday. - "Making Sausages" - A look at how to make traditional Slovak sausages. - "World Champions" - Slovakia's historic victory in the ice hockey. - "Volby 2002 - Slovak General Election" - Slovakia's most crucial General Election, in 2002. There is no doubt that Slovakia has changed a lot in the decades since these letters were first written, both for the better and for the worse, but many of the themes in the book still hold true today. Letters From Slovakia is simply a must-read for anyone with an interest in Slovakia.

Los Angeles. A city that is synonymous with celebrity and mass-market culture, is also, according to David James, synonymous with social alienation and dispersal. In the communities of Los Angeles, artists, cultural institutions and activities exist in ways that are often concealed from sight, obscured by the powerful presence of Hollywood and its machinations. In this significant collection of original essays, The Sons and Daughters of Los reconstructs the city of Los Angeles with new cultural connections. Explored here are the communities that offer alternatives to the picture of L..A. as a conglomeration of studios and mass media. Each essay examines a particular piece of, or place in, Los Angeles cultural life: from the Beyond Baroque Poetry Foundation, the Woman's Building, to Highways, and LACE, as well as the achievements of these grassroots initiatives. Also included is critical commentary on important artists, including Harry Gamboa, Jr., and others whose work have done much to shape popular culture in L.A. The cumulative effect of reading this book is to see a very different city take shape, one whose cultural landscape is far more innovative and reflective of the diversity of the city's people than mainstream notions of it suggest. The Sons and Daughters of Los offers a substantive and complicated picture of the way culture plays itself it out on the smallest scale-in one of the largest metropolises on earth-contributing to a richer, more textured understanding of the vibrancy of urban life and art.

Stan Brakhage: Filmmaker is a collection of essays, photographs, personal statements, and reminiscences about the celebrated avant-garde filmmaker who died in 2003. The director of nearly four hundred short films, including Dog Star Man, Parts I-IV, and the Roman Numeral Series, Brakhage is widely recognized as one of the great artists of the medium. His shorts eschewed traditional narrative structure, and his innovations in fast cutting, hand-held camerawork, and multiple superimpositions created an unprecedentedly rich texture of images that provided the vocabulary for the explosion of independent filmmaking in the 1960s. Stan Brakhage: Filmmaker chronicles both the director's personal and formal development. The essays in this book-by historians, filmmakers, and other artists-assess Brakhage's contributions to the aesthetic and political history of filmmaking, from his emergence on the film scene and the establishment of his reputation, to the early-1980s. The result is a remarkable tribute to this lyrical, visionary artist.
