David Lodge and the Tradition of the Modern Novel

David Lodge and the Tradition of the Modern Novel

J. Russell Perkin

David Lodge is a much-loved novelist and influential literary critic. Examining his career from his earliest publications in the late 1950s to his more recent works, David Lodge and the Tradition of the Modern Novel identifies Lodge's central place within the canon of twentieth-century British literature. J. Russell Perkin argues that liberalism is the defining feature of Lodge's identity as a novelist, critic, and Roman Catholic intellectual, and demonstrates that Graham Greene, James Joyce, Kingsley Amis, Henry James, and H.G. Wells are the key influences on Lodge's fiction. Perkin also considers Lodge's relationship to contemporary British novelists, including Hilary Mantel, Julian Barnes, and Monica Ali. In a study that is both theoretically informed and accessible to the general reader, Perkin shows that Lodge's work is shaped by the dialectic of modernism and the realist tradition. Through an approach that draws on diverse theories of literary influence and history, David Lodge and the Tradition of the Modern Novel provides the most thorough treatment of the novelist's career to date.

For nearly 40 years, David Lynch's works have enthralled, mystified, and provoked viewers. Lynch's films delve into the subjective consciousness of his characters to reveal both the depraved darkness and luminous spirituality of human nature. From his experimental shorts of the 1960s to feature films like Eraserhead, The Elephant Man, Blue Velvet, Mulholland Drive, and INLAND EMPIRE, Lynch has pushed the boundaries of cinematic storytelling. In David Lynch: Beautiful Dark, author Greg Olson explores the surreal intricacies of the director's unique visual and visceral style not only in his full-length films but also his early forays into painting and short films, as well as his television landmark, Twin Peaks. This in-depth exploration is the first full-length work to analyze the intimate symbiosis between Lynch's life experience and artistic expressions: from the small-town child to the teenage painter to the 60-year-old Internet and digital media experimenter. To fully delineate the director's life and art, Olson received unprecedented participation from Lynch, his parents, siblings, old school friends, romantic partners, children, and decades of professional colleagues, as well as on-set access to the director during the production of Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me. Throughout this study, Olson provides thorough analyses of the filmmaker's works as Lynch conceived, crafted, and completed them. Consequently, David Lynch: Beautiful Dark is the definitive study of one of the most influential and idiosyncratic directors of the last four decades.

During his travels as a missionary, David Livingstone beheld many previously unknown wonders of the African interior. He put Victoria Falls and Lake Ngami on the map, and was the first white man to cross the African continent. Diaries, reports and letters are combined to create a wonderful narration of Livingstone's travels in a widely unknown continent. Included in this harrowing tale is Livingstone's narrow escape from a lion's wrath, his negotiations with an African chief, and his account of the Portuguese slave traders brutally punishing slaves after their attempt to escape. The Life and African Explorations of Livingstone also reveals Livingstone's deeply-rooted Christian beliefs and the strength he took from them, strength that allowed him to live and thrive amid the hardships of equatorial Africa.

Internationally renowned, David Lynch was America's premier purveyor of the surreal, an artist whose work in cinema, television and the internet exposed the world to his highly personalised view of society. This book examines his oeuvre, from the cult surrealism of his debut feature Eraserhead to his last feature Inland Empire, considering the themes, motifs and stories behind his incredible feature films, shorts and internet projects. His series Twin Peaks revolutionised TV and expanded the possibilities of what the medium could offer. This updated edition includes Twin Peaks: The Return, his continuation of the series 25 years after the original had set the world alight. In Lynch's world the mundane and the fantastical collide, often with terrifying consequences. It is a place where the abnormal is normal, where the respectable becomes sinister, where innocence is lost and redemption gained at a terrible price. And there's always music in the air. From the deserts of a distant world to an ordinary backyard, at the breakneck speed of Lost Highway or the sedate determination of The Straight Story, readers will experience amateur sleuths, messiahs, giants and dwarves, chanteuses, psychopaths, cherry pie and damn fine coffee. David Lynch is your guide to this other world... and this is your guide to David Lynch.
David Levinthal: War, Myth, Desire
Since the mid-1970s, New York-based photographer David Levinthal (born 1949) has been exploring the relationship between photographic imagery and the fantasies, myths, events and characters that shape contemporary America's mental landscape. David Levinthal: War, Myth, Desire is the most comprehensive publication ever produced on the artist, containing major contributions to scholarship on the artist by curator Lisa Hostetler and contemporary art specialist Joanna Marsh, as well as commentary by art critic Dave Hickey. The volume is illustrated with examples from all of Levinthal's major series to date--including Hitler Moves East (1972-75), Modern Romance (1983-85), Wild West (1986-89), Desire (1991-92), Blackface (1995-98), Barbie (1997-98), Baseball (1998-2004) and History (2010-15). Levinthal's work has been a touchstone for conversations about theories of representation in photography and contemporary art, and through his work, he has investigated the overlapping of popular imagery with personal fantasy in the contexts of romance, sex, war, history, sports, space and social stereotypes. This publication gives readers the opportunity for the first time to consider the full scope of Levinthal's career as an artist.

DAVID is a biography of David Anderson, who in 1925 was born into one of the founding families of Standard Oil. The youngest of three brothers, David rebelled early against his elitist family, using Russian author Fyodor Dostoyevsky's raucous view of humanity as a guide. A Russian major at Yale, David Anderson's full, adventurous life has included three marriages, thirteen children (including steps), and three careers: corporate (General Dynamics); teaching (English, Russian, and history); and the Connecticut State legislature, where he was an early champion of climate change. During his 12-year term as a Representative, he evolved from Republican to Independent. At 94, Anderson is a leader of Reforest The Tropics, and a mover and shaker in Connecticut politics.
