The twentieth century was an era of socialist revolutionary transformations and significant social-democratic reforms. By the twenty-first century, these socialist inspired movements have largely disappeared, their ideologies have been disavowed, and their institutions dismantled and replaced by global neoliberal capitalism. This book explores the social, political and economic forces driving these movements in Western Europe and in the USSR, explaining their initial triumphs and how they eventually faltered under the influence of global neoliberalism. David Lane examines the nature and appeal of neoliberal capitalism and analyses current social and political proposals for its reform or replacement, including statist forms of capitalism; social-democratic and ecological globalization reforms; self-sustaining autonomous communities; and globalised forms of social-democracy or socialism. Outlining his own proposal to replace global neoliberal capitalism with political systems based on a combination of market socialism and state planning, Lane provides important insights for ways forward, and a challenge for parties seeking political and economic alternatives.

"Dido: The Tragedy of a Woman" is the second play (the first being "The Tragedy of King Lewis the Sixteenth" Tate]) that has come from the pen of the New York author, David Lane, who has once more composed in blank verse and the traditional language of poetry that was used by virtually all poets from the time of Homer to those of the early twentieth century. The story is based on the amorous tale of Dido and Aeneas as told by Virgil in the Fourth Book of the "Aeneid." Dido is the Foundress and Queen of the Phoenician colony of Carthage, situated on the Mediterranean coast of Africa, where Providence has brought the far-wandering Aeneas, erstwhile Prince of Troy, from which he and a faithful band fled after its sack and destruction by the Greeks at the end of the Trojan War.Straight upon the arrival of Aeneas at the royal court, Dido falls in love with him, her love deepening as his piety and relative moral sense manifest themselves. Although he returns her love, his character in time ironically moves him to leave her, if reluctantly, in obedience to a long-standing decree by Jupiter, the supreme god of the Trojans, that Aeneas must travel to Italy and become the progenitor of the Romans. Mr. Lane has altered the story by introducing an unintended by-blow of the liaison as a tiny engine to propel the drama. Dido is torn between the selfish brutality of the Carthaginians and the enlightened civilization of the Trojans. Whether readers want to stage the play or simply read it as a story, Mr. Lane's exquisite book offers a rich and engaging poetic and dramatic experience.

When the residents of Jackson county, Michigan heard of the South's attack on Fort Sumter, they responded by forming the 17th Michigan Volunteer Infantry. David Lane, at the age of 38, left his wife and four children and enlisted in company G, as bugler. He later became company clerk and hospital steward.Mr. Lane kept a diary of his civil war experiences and had it privately published in 1905, giving copies to family. "I had no thought at the time, nor for many years after, of having it published, but, as the years sped on, and the old veterans of the Civil War were being rapidly mustered for final discharge, I have been urged by many old friends and comrades to publish it, that our children and grandchildren may realize something of the hardships and trials their ancestors cheerfully endured for love of country," Bruce Catton, the well known Civil War historian quoted David Lane's diary multiple times in his book, "A Stillness at Appomattox."Additional research by the editor are included to provide supplemental information on phrases, places, persons and contemporary events.

The play presents the life of King Louis XVI of France during the French Revolution and is based on the tradition dating from the seventeenth century of an unfulfilled request by Jesus Christ through St. Margaret Mary Alacoque that, to avert a future catastrophe in the realm, Louis' great grandfather, Louis XIV, must consecrate France to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. In return for this act of humility, the Lord promised to shower France with graces and blessings. Louis XIV and the kings who followed him delayed in making the consecration until, finally, on June 17, 1789, one hundred years later to the day, the Third Estate of the Estates General declared itself the National Assembly, challenging King Louis XVI and initiating the French Revolution. Louis was later stripped of his powers and sent to the guillotine to be put to death like a common criminal; France thereupon became engulfed in the horrors of the Revolutionary Terror.
