One Land, Two Peoples

One Land, Two Peoples

Deborah J Gerner

Westview Press Inc

The Israeli-Palestinian conflict has once again captured world attention?this time because of the coming together of Arafat and Rabin as a result of the secret Oslo Accords and the reactions ensuing from this historic?and challenging?event. One Land, Two Peoples, originally published in the throes of the intifada, now brings its wide readership up to date on progress in the peace negotiations, beginning with their breakdown and subsequent stalemate following the Gulf War and the ensuing renaissance stimulated by the Oslo Accords. One Land, Two Peoples describes the Israeli-Palestinian dynamic as a conflict ?rooted in its own reality''?a struggle that, despite its international dimensions, must be resolved by the principals themselves. Throughout, Deborah Gerner shows how what is happening today is steeped in the history of the region and illustrates ways that theories of international relations can help address questions about the politics of national identity and the roles of economics, culture, religion, and outside actors in fueling or quelling the conflict. In its first edition, this text was commended for its clarity, conciseness, and balanced viewpoint. It has been used in college classrooms ranging from international relations and foreign policy to Middle East studies, religious studies, peace studies, history, English, and many more. This new and fully revised second edition includes updated maps, tables, photos, illustrations, media resources, chronology, and glossary, all of which add to the superb text presentation.
Hugo Wolf's Lieder and Extensions of Tonality

Hugo Wolf's Lieder and Extensions of Tonality

Deborah J Stein

University of Rochester Press

pokkari
Study of the harmonic language of the late 19c based on songs by Hugo Wolf. The harmonic language of the late nineteenth-century is studied here as a development of common-practice tonality, taking as a model selected songs by Hugo Wolf. Late nineteenth-century romantic composers employed extended-tonallanguage in a variety of genres, and a special feature of such tonal exapansion was the use of extra musical elements. Hugo Wolfs output, encompassing over 160 miniature masterworks, displays all the necessary characteristics, and makes an ideal subject for studying extensions of tonality. The study is organised to focus on individual techniques of tonal expanison, then to explore the foundations of that technique, and finally, to illustrate the conclusions with particular Wolf songs. Necessarily, Wolf's relationship to Richard Wagner, and to Wagner's revolutionary musical language, forms a part of this study, and so too does the similarity of Wolf's music to that of his contemporaries.

Understanding and applying the principles of ergonomics consistently in an organization not only reduces the risk of employee injuries, but it also reduces an organization's costs and increases productivity. This newly updated handbook examines 17 new workplace factors—50 in all—to consider when implementing an ergonomics program. Organized alphabetically by factor, each section includes a descriptive checklist, allowing managers to quickly assess each factor's status and level of conformance with safety, quality, and productivity considerations. The author, an internationally recognized expert and public speaker, will show you why ergonomics is a business solution and not a business problem, how to create cost-effective ergonomics programs, which step-by-step procedures to use for evaluating a workplace environment and implementing ergonomic changes, how to accommodate the needs of aging and disabled workers, and how to use ergonomics to increase productivity. A glossary of ergonomic terms and a listing of sources of additional information are included.

For avid readers as well as academics, Sue Monk Kidd: A Collection of Critical Essays offers seven analytic studies of several of Kidd’s novels, including The Invention of Wings, The Secret Life of Bees, and The Book of Longings, plus the film version of The Secret Life of Bees, to bring expanded perspectives to her work. These literary essays can serve as examples for students of literature, find a place in college English classrooms as well as libraries for both secondary and higher education, and appeal to scholars of American literature. A discourse is launched here regarding Kidd’s place in postcolonialism, identity, feminism, voice, perception, spirituality, and humor. Much like other notable Southern authors before her, namely William Faulkner, Kate Chopin, Tennessee Williams, Alice Walker, Carson McCullers, Flannery O’Connor, Zora Neale Hurston, and Harper Lee, Kidd’s vision is more tragedy than morality play or melodrama, closer to Realism but not without Romanticism. These essays reveal how oppression, abuse, abandonment, injustice, and other tragedies find their way into Kidd’s novels. The characters’ plights are met not with easy or tension-free resolutions, but love, humor, insight, transcendence, and grit are rendered as they struggle with inhumane difficulties. Sue Monk Kidd’s worldview is at once inclusive and expansive, transitional and transformative, heartbreaking and healing, and this collection imparts that, inviting more scholarly discourse and investigation of her exceptional works.

That same herb would be used in a spell to ignite passion in her husband.Today should be no different. In this book, Master Herbalist Deborah Martin details sixty-nine herbs that will do triple duty, whether in your cooking pot, medicine chest or cauldron.
