A compelling new history of the EU and the people who sought to shape and challenge it—from Maastricht to today The European Union is the most ambitious, and one of the most contentious, international organizations ever created. Decisions made in Brussels shape the lives of over 500 million Europeans, and its laws and policies resonate around the world. But how has the EU endured over three turbulent decades marred by crises at home and abroad? In this major account, Dermot Hodson traces the development of the EU from its establishment in 1993 through to Brexit, Covid-19, and the invasion of Ukraine. Hodson shows how the union has been held together not by faceless technocrats but national leaders who stood together in times of turmoil despite a fierce backlash from a new generation of right-wing populists. Circle of Stars offers a rich appraisal of Europe’s troubled past and turbulent present—focusing on the people who built the EU as we know it today.

Originally published in 1986. Based on interviews with men in prison, this study takes two groups of convicted criminals: men convicted of robbery, and, for comparison, a sample of men convicted for breaking into commercial premises. It focuses on how victims are chosen, the decision-making processes involved, and the characteristics of those selected and those rejected as unsuitable potential victim material. Also described are the pattern of the crime (time, place, gain), and the ways in which people become involved in it. Allowing several convicted robbers describe in their own way why they did it and what they thought and felt about it, Dermot Walsh presents a disquieting picture, in which robbery appears to be an attractive proposition to several different groups of men, facing quite different circumstances, and for different reasons.

Irish affairs have been overshadowed by the British presence, and Anglo-Irish relations have usually been seen as central to Irish history. However, the wider continental influence on Ireland has been very considerable and has been unjustly neglected in the past. Dermot Keogh's book rectifies this situation by examining critically the connections between continental Europe and Ireland from the Treaty of Versailles and the influence of European Roman Catholicism to the formal declaration of the Irish republic. Ireland & Europe provides a valuable source for studying Irish political life during the first thirty years of independence. Contents: Introduction; From D·il …ireann to Saorst·t: Continental Europe and the Development of Irish Diplomacy, 1919-32; De Valera and Foreign Policy Idealism: Apprenticeship in Classical Diplomacy, 1932-36; Ireland and the Popular Fronts, 1936-39; De Valera: Neutrality and the Retreat to Realism, 1939; The Diplomacy of Survival, 1939-40; Europe and the Path of 'Friendly' Neutrality, 1941-45; Epilogue: Ireland and the Diplomacy of Normalcy in Europe, 1945-48; References; Bibliography; Index^R

The first collection of plays from one of Ireland's most accomplished contemporary writers This volume contains four plays: The Lament for Arthur Cleary: "Theatrically rich and socially powerful, it takes on the lineaments of an epic voyage, a voyage into the dark heart of a city where Irish theatre has seldom been before" (Irish Times); In High Germany: "Thoughtful, comic, sad and provocative, this monologue of a lost and altered heritage ...These two plays [In High Germany and The Holy Ground] are cogent manifestations of a changing Irish world" (Irish Times); The Holy Ground: "A tour de force. It's stream of consciousness theatre at its best ...[which] develops a pace until the listener is hanging on to every syllable" (Sunday Press); Blinded by the Light: "Manically madcap and hilariously funny, it canters in a bawdy romp onto the stage, heralding the arrival of a unique comic writing talent. Dermot Moran's groundbreaking and comprehensive "Introduction to Phenomenology" lucidly examines the contributions of phenomenology's seminal thinkers: Brentano, Husserl, Scheler, Stein, Heidegger, Gadamer, Arendt, Levinas, Sartre, Merleau-Ponty, Henry, Marion, Ricoeur, and Derrida. Written in a clear and engaging style, "Introduction to Phenomenology" charts the course of the phenomenological movement from its origins in Husserl through its transformation by Derrida and beyond. It describes the thought of Heidegger and Sartre, phenomenology's most famous thinkers, and introduces and assesses the distinctive use of phenomenology by some of its lesser-known exponents, such as Levinas, Arendt and Gadamer. Throughout the book, the enormous influence of phenomenology on the course of twentieth-century philosophy is thoroughly explored. The new edition features: a timeline of key events and publications; and, a glossary of philosophical and technical terms. 2 new chapters: Embodiment, Emotion and Empathy, which concentrates on the work of Edith Stein and Max Scheler, and Recent French Phenoenology, which examines post-Levinas, post-Derrida French phenomenology in the work of Paul Ricoeur, Jean-Luc Marion and Michel Henry. This title provides an updated introduction and conclusion, addressing the contributions of phenomenology to philosophy of mind and cognitive science, and the current debate between transcendental philosophy and naturalism. This is an indispensable introduction to a key movement for all those seeking an understanding of 20th century European thought.

Autism Spectrum Disorders

Autism Spectrum Disorders

Dermot Bowler

John Wiley Sons Inc
2006
nidottu
Psychological research into autism spectrum disorders (ASD) has increased exponentially in the last two decades. Much of this work has been led by various theorists who claim to have identified processes that hold the key to understanding the condition. As a consequence, newcomers to the field feel that they have to opt for one or more of the competing approaches and to neglect the remainder as being in some way wrong. In fact, the different theoretical perspectives are just that - different points of view on the same phenomenon - each with its own insights to offer. This is not to say that understanding ASD in psychological terms is just a matter of choosing a perspective and that all perspectives are of equal value. Clearly they are not. This book, in addition to providing an outline of what current perspectives have to offer, also provides a framework to help readers to decide which aspects of psychological research into ASD contribute to our understanding of the field and how these can be integrated in a way that enables research to be taken forward.
Heresy and Obedience in Tridentine Italy

Heresy and Obedience in Tridentine Italy

Dermot Fenlon

Cambridge University Press
2008

Reginald Pole was one of the most complex figures in sixteenth-century history. The only Englishman to follow a career at the Roman Curia in the crucial decades of the Reformation, the victim successively of the Tudor Reformation and the Roman Inquisition, his life was marked by misunderstanding, failure and tragedy. This book is a study of his career in Italy, his involvement in the Council of Trent and his share in the vain attempt to obtain reunification with the Protestants. Dr Fenlon discusses in great detail Pole's attitudes towards the doctrine of the Protestant reformers, its influence within Italy and the development of his group of `spirituals' at Viterbo. But this is not simply a biography of Pole nor an analysis of his influence. Rather it is an examination of the crisis the Catholic Church and its adherents faced in the Reformation, the conflict exemplified in Pole's personal experience and that of the groups among which he moved, between obedience to the established ecclesiastical order and sympathy with Luther's tenets. The crisis and its resolution reflect the genesis of the Reformation and the Catholic Counter Reformation which resulted in the final confessional divisions of Christian Europe.
The Vatican, the Bishops and Irish Politics 1919–39

The Vatican, the Bishops and Irish Politics 1919–39

Dermot Keogh

Cambridge University Press
2004
pokkari
A detailed study of the political relations between church and state in modern Ireland, this work is also an analysis of domestic politics within the context of Anglo-Vatican relations. Dealing exclusively with high ecclesiastical politics, it assesses the relative political strength of both the British and the Irish at the Vatican and challenges 'the myth of English dominance over the Papacy'. Dermot Keogh traces the 'quiet diplomacy' of bishops, politicians and the Vatican from the turbulent years of 1919–21, through the civil war period and the rule of William T. Cosgrove and Cumann na nGaedheal, to the re-emergence of Eamon de Valera and Fianna Fail as exponents of Catholic nationalism in the 1930s. The book draws extensively on unpublished documents and, for the first time, explores with the aid of primary sources the exchanges between bishops, politicians and the Vatican over a twenty-year period. It is an important contribution to the history of modern Ireland, Irish-Vatican and Anglo-Vatican relations, whose findings will lead to a radical revision of interpretations of Irish church-state relations.
Husserl's Crisis of the European Sciences and Transcendental Phenomenology
The Crisis of the European Sciences is Husserl's last and most influential book, written in Nazi Germany where he was discriminated against as a Jew. It incisively identifies the urgent moral and existential crises of the age and defends the relevance of philosophy at a time of both scientific progress and political barbarism. It is also a response to Heidegger, offering Husserl's own approach to the problems of human finitude, history and culture. The Crisis introduces Husserl's influential notion of the 'life-world' - the pre-given, familiar environment that includes both 'nature' and 'culture' - and offers the best introduction to his phenomenology as both method and philosophy. Dermot Moran's rich and accessible introduction to the Crisis explains its intellectual and political context, its philosophical motivations and the themes that characterize it. His book will be invaluable for students and scholars of Husserl's work and of phenomenology in general.
The Philosophy of John Scottus Eriugena

The Philosophy of John Scottus Eriugena

Dermot Moran

Cambridge University Press
2004
pokkari
This work is a substantial contribution to the history of philosophy. Its subject, the ninth-century philosopher John Scottus Eriugena, developed a form of idealism that owed as much to the Greek Neoplatonic tradition as to the Latin fathers and anticipated the priority of the subject in its modern, most radical statement: German idealism. Moran has written the most comprehensive study yet of Eriugena’s philosophy, tracing the sources of his thinking and analyzing his most important text, the Periphyseon. This volume will be of special interest to historians of mediaeval philosophy, history, and theology.
