Written by researchers at a federally funded outreach program to combat the spread of AIDS, this book analyzes the efforts of the Miami Community Outreach Project to intervene in AIDS-related risk behavior among intravenous drug users and their sexual partners. The work provides background information on the history of AIDS, the risk behaviors of drug abusers, and federal intervention programs. It discusses the prevalence of the HIV virus in the Miami area and gives a detailed description of the project, discussing the theoretical basis for the project, the intervention strategies used, the rationale behind those strategies, and the results achieved. Appendixes provide information on the health of the subjects, the material used, and the Belle Glade Community Outreach Project modeled after the Miami project. The book begins with background information on the history of AIDS, the risk behaviors of drug abusers and their sexual partners, and federal attempts to combat the spread of AIDS. How close do we dare to get to Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount? It’s widely considered the key to understanding who Jesus was and what mission he strove to fulfill. For two millennia, countless people have wrestled to apply it, from Augustine to Luther to Tolstoy to Gandhi. Alongside much wisdom, there has been much evasion, prompting Jewish theologian Pinchas Lapide’s tart comment: “The history of the impact of the Sermon on the Mount can largely be described in terms of an attempt to domesticate everything in it that is shocking, demanding, and uncompromising, and render it harmless.” There’s good reason for this: Jesus’ teaching is deeply disruptive. It demands a top-to-bottom reordering of life, work, and social relations, starting with radical economic sharing, nonresistance and love of enemies, lifelong marriage, and unconditional forgiveness. This issue of Plough Quarterly focuses on people willing to get their hands dirty living out the Sermon on the Mount. Their ranks include Dorothy Day, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, John Wesley, Henri Nouwen, Mother Teresa, and others you’ll meet in these pages. Their insights are not to be consumed passively. Rather, they should inspire and equip each of us to roll up our sleeves and get to work. Bold, hope-filled, and down-to-earth, Plough Quarterly features thought-provoking articles, commentary, interviews, short fiction, book reviews, poetry and artwork to inspire everyday faith and action. Each issue brings together essential voices from many traditions to give you fresh insights on a core theme such as peacemaking, biblical justice, children and family, building community, man and woman, nature and the environment, nonviolence, or simple living. Starting from the conviction that the teachings and example of Jesus can transform and renew our world, it aims to apply them to all aspects of life, seeking common ground with all people of goodwill regardless of creed.

Comfort and ease can be our downfall. The easy life will probably elude us because after Adam and Eve got booted from the Garden of Eden we were cursed to toil. God wanted us to work and not be on a perpetual vacation We were made to strive, work, sweat, and serve. When our needs are all met we can easily become lethargic. Our tastes can veer to a momentary satisfaction but not for the long term. May the Lord help us to turn from these ways. Our thinking can become jaded without self-control and waste can overflow in our abundance. May the Lord bless our thoughts to live better for Christ. If you feel this way at all, prayer can help you turn your life over to Christ and healthy living. These prayers are here for you. We pray that they might help give you a breakthrough performance in your life for Christ. Amazon International Best Seller's Ranked Author*, D. Duane Engler, adds another title in the 40 Prayers(TM) Series in collaboration with Ryan Andrews. *One of D. The first of the chronological volumes in this acclaimed critical edition of Bonhoeffer's work gathers his one hundred earliest letters and journals from after the First World War through his graduation from Berlin University. It also contains his early theological writings up to his dissertation. These seventeen works include, for example, works on the patristic period for Adolf von Harnack, on Luther's moods for Karl Holl, on biblical interpretation for Professor Reinhold Seeberg, as well as essays on the church and eschatology, reason and revelation, Job, John, and even joy. Rounding out this picture of Bonhoeffer's nascent theology are his sermons from the period, along with his lectures on homiletics, catechesis, and practical theology. In translation for the first time, these writings show Bonhoeffer as pastor and theologian alert to his times and developing the formative themes of his religious worldview.

Arkansas Politics and Government

Arkansas Politics and Government

Diane D. Blair Irrevocable Trust; Jay Barth

University of Nebraska Press
2005
pokkari
Published a decade and a half after the late Diane D. Blair's influential book Arkansas Politics and Government, this freshly revised edition builds on her work, which highlighted both the decades of failure by Arkansas's government to live up to the state's motto of Regnat Populus ("The People Rule") and the positive trends of democracy. Since the first edition, Arkansas has seen the two-term U.S. presidency of a native son, the retirement of players who defined the state's politics in the modern era, the further realignment of the state's electorate, the passage of the nation's most extreme legislative term limits, the complete overhaul of the state's court system, and the declaration that the state's public education system was unconstitutionally inadequate and inequitable. While maintaining the basic structure of Blair's original work with its focus on important historical patterns and the ways in which the past continues to shape the present, the second edition details the causes and consequences of recent changes in Arkansas and asks whether they are profound and permanent or merely transitory variations in symbol and style. Jay Barth argues that although Arkansas currently expresses a healthier representative democracy than throughout most of its history, its political and governmental entities are still sharply limited as effective instruments of "the people."
Christina Rossetti

Since Arthur Symons's declaration in 1895 in the Saturday Review that Christina Rossetti was ""among the great poets of the nineteenth century,"" Rossetti's image among critics has undergone permutations as divergent as Victorian culture is from postmodern. Now Diane D'Amico redeems Rossetti from the various one-dimensional castings assigned her across the generations- those of a saint writing poetry for God; of a sexually repressed, neurotic woman of minor talent; and, most recently, of a subversive feminist questioning the patriarchy- and renders a fuller, more intricate understanding of the poet than any to date. With flawless logic, balance, and clarity, D'Amico seals her case that Rossetti's faith, her gender, and the times in which she lived should all be considered to appreciate her poetic voice.According to D'Amico, the image of Rossetti that can best serve as a guide to her more than one thousand poems reflects the centrality of her faith- not as evidence of sexual repression nor necessarily as absolute truth, but as absolute truth for Rossetti. It will then become apparent how Rossetti's commitment to her Christian faith, her experience as a Victorian woman, and her poetic vocation are inextricably interwoven.

This text takes a ""third sophistics"" approach to rhetoric, one that focuses on the play of language that disrupts the ""either/or"" construction of dialectic. It concentrates on the nonsequential third that overflows language's dichotomies. In this work laughter operates as a trope for disruption.

Feline Infectious Peritonitis and Coronavirus: Everything a cat lover needs to know

Feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) is a major killer of pedigree/purebred kittens and cats from rescue shelters in the 21st century. FIP is one of the most enigmatic, and difficult to diagnose, feline diseases. FIP is caused by feline coronavirus (FCoV), but most cats infected with FCoV do not develop FIP. The key messages of this book are: 1.The most important way to prevent FIP is by preventing infection with feline coronavirus.2.Have any new kitten or cat tested for FCoV antibodies before bringing him or her into your home, if you already have cats.3.Most cats infected with FCoV eliminate the virus after a few months, and remain perfectly healthy.4.Cats become infected with FCoV by contact with cat litter (or cat litter dust particles) contaminated with virus laden faeces from an infected cat.5.Most cats suspected of having FIP actually have some other, often treatable, condition.
