Murder at St Paul's Cathedral

Murder at St Paul's Cathedral

May, 1941. One of the senior choristers at St Paul's, Edwin Roberts, is found beaten to death in the crypt of the cathedral and Detective Chief Inspector Coburg and Sergeant Lampson are called in to investigate. The dead man was far from popular. That, coupled with a small army of staff at work at the famous landmark, including those on the Night Watch striving to protect the cathedral from the worst of the Blitz, means that there is no shortage of suspects. The case is complicated further by links to the top-secret war work being carried out at Bletchley Park and by the black market in rare books and valuable art which casts its shadow over St Paul's. When the killer strikes again, St Paul's is in danger of becoming known as a place of death rather than worship, and Coburg and Lampson are under pressure to get to the bottom of a fiendishly complex investigation.

Rome, 1900. Fifteen years ago, Abigail Wilson joined an archaeological dig at the Colosseum at the start of her career. She returns now to the Eternal City as a guest speaker for a festival on Classical Rome, including the site of legendary gladiator battles. Travelling with Abigail is her husband, Daniel Wilson, a private investigator with whom she has built up a reputation for solving complex cases. The trip is also meant to be a well-earned holiday, but the bloody history of the ancient arena seeps into the present with the violent murder of one of Abigail's colleagues and his wife at the Colosseum itself. Moving from the Forum to the Spanish Steps, Rome is suddenly the backdrop of another investigation for the Museum Detectives, who must contend with the local authorities and a shady mafia influence if they are to crack this case.

Following their trip to Italy, it is now January 1901, and the Wilsons are on their way to the Great Pyramid of Khufu at Giza. Abigail persuades a reluctant Daniel to venture into the pyramid via the entrance to the Robbers' Tunnel - using a flaming torch for light, they travel just a short distance, when they come upon the dead body of a man who has been garrotted. Investigations by the local police reveal him to be Simeon McGruder, a wealthy American who is financing an exploration of the pyramids. When Daniel and Abigail return to Cairo they are asked by the American Embassy if they can take on the case, but they have a difficult path to tread as they try to keep different factions onside: the British and American authorities, the puppet Egyptian Government and officials, while at the same time facing lies and deviousness from McGruder's associates and friends.

Alan Turing was one of the most influential thinkers of the 20th century. He created one of the first designs for a stored-program computer and is widely considered to be the father of computer science and artificial intelligence. During World War II, Turing worked for the Government Code and Cypher School at Bletchley Park, Britain's codebreaking centre, where he was responsible for breaking German naval codes, including the supposedly unbreakable Enigma code, and helping the Atlantic convoys avoid German U-boat attacks. This work probably shortened World War II by up to four years, saving millions of lives. This is the story of the amazing life and work of a British hero and one of the greatest thinkers of the 20th century.

His Holiness needs to meet Museum Detectives, Mr and Mrs Wilson, urgently. It's been two years since Daniel and Abigail Wilson visited the Eternal City, and this time they're invited by none other than Pope Leo XIII himself. But this is no sightseeing visit, as the renowned detectives are asked to put their skills to good use, investigating a suspected assassination attempt from within the Vatican's walls. Who can be trusted when murder could come from any direction? As the detectives begin to delve into the workings of the Vatican they encounter all manner of threats, with possible Mafia involvement likely. It seems not everyone views the presence of two British non-Catholics as welcome in such matters, and they certainly do not appreciate them meddling in finely laid plans.
