Transmutations, Singular and Fractional Differential Equations with Applications to Mathematical Physics
Transmutations, Singular and Fractional Differential Equations with Applications to Mathematical Physics connects difficult problems with similar more simple ones. The book's strategy works for differential and integral equations and systems and for many theoretical and applied problems in mathematics, mathematical physics, probability and statistics, applied computer science and numerical methods. In addition to being exposed to recent advances, readers learn to use transmutation methods not only as practical tools, but also as vehicles that deliver theoretical insights.

This volume (the first of two) publishes all Anglo-Saxon and British coins in Norwegian museum collections from the Iron Age up to 1016 (the death of Æthelred II 'the Unready'). Together, the two volumes contain images and descriptions of over 4,000 coins, making this important material available for analysis by archaeologists, historians and numismatists of the Viking Age and Anglo-Saxon England for the first time. Finds of English coins constitute some of the most important Norwegian evidence for Viking activity, and for economic life in Norway before the first royal coinage was issued by King Harald Hardrada in the mid-eleventh century. Anglo-Saxon coins made their way to Norway in such numbers through Viking raiding activity, trade and payments of tribute; consequently these collections provide a broad perspective of late Anglo-Saxon coinage as well as an outstanding series of rarities. These include historically significant early Viking-Age finds, the B. F. Brekke collection of Anglo-Scandinavian coins, an Agnus Dei penny of Æthelred II and the unique 'Pointed Helmet' penny of Æthelred II. The volume also includes a comprehensive and up-to-date list of hoards and coin finds, and the first detailed English-language account of the history of the Norwegian numismatic collections. It follows the Sylloge of Coins of the British Isles series format in illustrating all the coins, allowing detailed study of eight museum collections.

This volume publishes all the Anglo-Saxon and British coins in Norwegian museum collections that date from 1016 (the accession of Cnut) to 1279. It thus completes the two-part catalogue of over 4,200 coins (those of the Anglo-Saxon period to 1016 were published in volume 65 of the Sylloge of Coins of the British Isles) in eight museum collections. This important material is made available for analysis by archaeologists, historians and numismatists of the Viking Age and Anglo-Saxon England for the first time. Finds of English coins constitute some of the most important Norwegian evidence for Viking activity, and for economic life in Norway before the first royal coinage was issued by King Harald Hardrada in the mid-eleventh century. Anglo-Saxon coins made their way to Norway in such numbers through Viking raiding activity, trade and payments of tribute over many years; consequently these collections provide a broad perspective of the late Anglo-Saxon coinage. The volume also includes significant groups of Anglo-Scandinavian and Hiberno-Scandinavian imitative coins, six Scottish and one Irish coin. Rarities include two Hiberno-Manx coins, and further coins from the B. F. Brekke collection of Anglo-Scandinavian imitative coins. Appendices summarise information on the very small fragments from hoards, which are exceptionally well preserved in the Norwegian collections. Cumulative indexes of mints and moneyers include all the coins published in both volumes.

In Worlds Within, Elina Gertsman investigates the Shrine Madonnas, or Vierges ouvrantes—sculptures that conceal within their bodies complex carved and/or painted iconographies. The Shrine Madonna emerged in Europe at the end of the 1200s and reached a peak of popularity during the following three centuries. Gertsman argues that the appearance of these objects—predicated as they are on the dynamic of concealment, revelation, and fragmentation—points to the changing roles of vision and sensation in the complex, performative ways in which audiences were expected to engage with devotional images, both in public and in private. Worlds Within considers these fascinating sculptures in terms of the rhetoric of secrecy, the discourse of containment, and the tropes of unveiling. Gertsman demonstrates how the statues were associated with the processes of seeing and memory-making and how they functioned as instruments of revelatory knowledge and spiritual reformation in the context of late medieval European culture.

Winner of the 2022 Charles Rufus Morey Award from the College Art Association Winner of the 2023 Otto Gründler Book Prize from Western Michigan UniversityGuided by Aristotelian theories, medieval philosophers believed that nature abhors a vacuum. Medieval art, according to modern scholars, abhors the same. The notion of horror vacui—the fear of empty space—is thus often construed as a definitive feature of Gothic material culture. In The Absent Image, Elina Gertsman argues that Gothic art, in its attempts to grapple with the unrepresentability of the invisible, actively engages emptiness, voids, gaps, holes, and erasures.Exploring complex conversations among medieval philosophy, physics, mathematics, piety, and image-making, Gertsman considers the concept of nothingness in concert with the imaginary, revealing profoundly inventive approaches to emptiness in late medieval visual culture, from ingenious images of the world’s creation ex nihilo to figurations of absence as a replacement for the invisible forces of conception and death.Innovative and challenging, this book will find its primary audience with students and scholars of art, religion, physics, philosophy, and mathematics. It will be particularly welcomed by those interested in phenomenological and cross-disciplinary approaches to the visual culture of the later Middle Ages.

In this perfect gift for grandparents and grandchildren alike, a loving child reveals the truth behind assumptions that old people just aren't any fun. Grandparents are slow. Grandparents are scared of new things. And grandparents definitely don't dance -- right? A simple, playful storyline that children will love anticipating makes this a perfect read-aloud for modern families to share together. With sly humor and breezy, dynamic artwork in the tradition of Quentin Blake, this book is a fresh celebration of the special relationship between grandparents and grandchildren.
The Political Economy of International Commodity Cartels
The Political Economy of International Commodity Cartels examines how international commodity cartels in the 1930s were impacted not only by commercial rivalry, but also by international trade political and diplomatic concerns. This work presents the rise and decline of the European Timber Exporters’ Convention (ETEC) and analyses how firms navigated through the cartel game under increasing international competition, pressures from the national governments, and the interventionist endeavours of the League of Nations. Cartels are often associated with, in the standard economic interpretation, business collusion. However, in using vast archive sources and historical methodology, the chapters in this book shed light onto how international relations shaped cartels. The rise of British protectionism, the emergence of the Soviet Union as an industrial power, and the economic rapprochement of the League of Nations in the early 1930s created a wave of political and diplomatic challenges in the timber trading countries and affected cartelisation. Timber firms in the biggest producer countries—Finland and Sweden—were uninterested in international cartel collaboration, but under pressure joined the ETEC nevertheless. This book makes a strong contribution to the fields of business history and cartel studies. It is an essential read for economic historians interested in how political pressure shaped international cartels and how cartels became avenues of diplomacy.
Towards a General Theory of Boredom

Towards a General Theory of Boredom

Through comparative historical research, this book offers a novel theory explaining the emergence of boredom in modernity. Presenting a Durkheimian topology of cross-cultural boredom, it grounds the sociological cause of boredom in anomie and the perception of time, compares its development through case studies in Anglo and Russian society, and explains its minimal presence outside of the West. By way of illustrative examples, it includes archetypes of boredom in literature, art, film, and music, with a focus on the death of traditional art, and boredom in politics, including strategies enacted by Queer intellectuals. The author argues that boredom often results from the absence of a strong commitment to engaging with society, and extends Durkheim’s theory of suicide to boredom in order to consider whether an imbalance between social regulation and integration results in boredom. The first book to scientifically explain the historical emergence and epidemic of boredom while engaging with cutting edge political debates, Towards a General Theory of Boredom will appeal to scholars across the social sciences with interests in social theory, social psychology, and sociology.
