A pioneer in the field of behavioral medicine, the late Thomas H. Holmes developed a set of scales that measured the impact of life changes and events on a person's health, particularly stress-related disorders. This volume collects for the first time the key research studies that emanated from the Holmes laboratory at the University of Washington from 1957 through 1981. Designed to serve as a reference book and a resource for students and scholars interested in life change research, Life Change, Life Events, and Illness provides ready access to the historical record of the Holmes psychosocial laboratory. For archival purposes, editorial revisions have been undertaken only to correct errata, update references, and establish stylistic conformity. The first chapter, written specifically for this volume, places the work of the Holmes laboratory in historical context, probes the beginning of Holme's research hypothesis in studies of the physiology of emotions, and outlines the direction of his research program. The first group of readings review the development, testing, and validation of three innovative research instruments: The Social Readjustment Rating Scale, the Seriousness of Illness Rating Scale, and the Schedule of Recent Experience. Subsequent chapters reconstruct the initial applications of methodologies developed by Holmes and his colleagues, culminating in the formulation of a paradigm for the relationship of life change and illness susceptibility. The final papers illustrate the realms into which life change research expanded in the last decade of Holme's tenure at the laboratory.

Making American Taste: Narrative Art for a New Democracy is a landmark publication focusing on American narrative art from 1825 to 1870. A significant contribution to our understanding of taste and collecting during this period, it reasseses themes including the rural and the domestic, as well as a broad range of historical, literary and religious subject matter. American art at this time was dominated by powerful arguments about what constituted true art: should it be for the many, or the educated few, and should specifically American art forms and styles be favoured over more traditional, academic, European traditions. Making American Taste looks at these issues through the work of both well-known artists, like Benjamin West, Asher B. Durand and Eastman Johnson, and less familiar names such as Daniel Huntington, Henry Peters Gray and Louis Lang.
IntroductionThe doctrine of common grace is the idea that God has a grace, or goodness, which is universally bestowed on all men. Supporters of the doctrine use it to explain everything from indiscriminate rainfall and sunshine on both the good and the wicked to a universal desire in God to save all men, even those who will ultimately go to hell. Dr Ella's book is a timely and useful look at this teaching. His brief but probing examination concentrates on an effort by some recent writers to construct a basis for the so-called 'free offer of the gospel' in common grace teaching. He questions the notion that common grace is a route to saving faith through the preaching of a gospel ultimately grounded in natural theology. He concludes that the 'common grace' gospel is based on unscriptural views of nature, man, God and salvation. The author shows that the gospel call does not derive from a universal but frustrated desire in God to save all men, nor from a grace that is common to all. Rather the gospel brings grace to the elect by the direct, distinguishing power of the Holy Spirit according to God's eternal purpose for the salvation of His people. The common grace teaching that Christ died theoretically for all sinners but effectively for only some is thus to be rejected as a false gospel.Peter L. Meney

The heart of the gospel is the death of Jesus Christ. To understand the gospel we must understand what happened on the cross. We talk of 'power in the blood' but what does Christ's blood do? How is God reconciled to a sinner? How is divine anger placated and justification secured? Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ implies there is something meaningful and objective to be known and believed. Words matter and the language and terminology we use to describe the work of the Saviour on the cross is important for personal spiritual wellbeing and essential for honest gospel preaching. Good words, old words, words like atonement, ransom, redemption, and propitiation, to mention a few, are words that carry meaning and significance. We must not lose these words nor their weightiness and power. If we are to know and experience grace, mercy, and peace with God, and real joy in the Lord, it is essential we know the true gospel in all its depth and splendour. Yet, because language changes and because there is a general dumbing down of doctrinal precision from pulpits and presses, today's evangelicals are at risk of losing much of the wealth of the theology bequeathed to them by their forebears. This will come at a price. Shallow understanding leads to shallow experience of God's grace and goodness. In this book Dr George Ella draws from his wide knowledge of history, theology, language and education to show the importance of keeping a clear focus on Christ's one saving work on the cross while not losing sight of the many ways salvation is presented, described and admired by the Holy Spirit in scripture revelation. He shows how misusing terms diminishes clear understanding and challenges those who have purposefully confused Bible revelation by ignoring or redefining Bible words and muddying pure gospel streams. This work will serve all believers well as it re-emphasises the importance of clear doctrine for a Christian's experience of grace. Young preachers will benefit who realise the importance of the words they bring to their ministry and the need for clarity and truth in serving their congregations with God's message of peace by the atoning death of Jesus Christ.
The history of Christian evangelism in India is a story woven into the narrative of colonialism, expansionism, military power, politics and trade. But it is also the story of individuals, men and women, who felt the call of God to carry their faith to faraway places out of love for their fellow man, and in obedience to the Great Commission of the Lord Jesus Christ. Dr George Ella; missionary, author and historian, supplies us with unique insights into this great Gospel work. Being in the rare position of having access to historical records in multiple languages from original sources, he shows how European missionaries from the seventeenth to the nineteenth century from different countries and denominations worked hand in hand to established churches and spread the Gospel in India.Table of ContentsForewordIntroduction: A British Schoolboy's Fascination for IndiaPart 1: India Receives the GospelChapter OneProgression and Regression in Early Indian Missions Chapter Two The Gospel versus Colonialism in India Chapter Three Paving the Way for Modern Missions to India Part 2: August Hermann Francke (1663-1727) Chapter Four Francke the Language Student and Social Reformer Chapter FiveFrancke the University Professor and Missiologist Part 3: Establishing a Permanent Witness in India Chapter Six

From the beginning men who obviously never read Gill warned me of what they called his 'tendencies toward Hyper-Calvinism and Antinomianism'. Having read almost everything Gill wrote, I am still searching for even a hint of these 'tendencies'. Instead, I have found in all his writings the most faithful exposition of Holy Scripture, a consistent Christ-centred, Christ exalting theology, and a constant, robust declaration of God's free and sovereign grace in Christ. Very few days have passed since my first introduction to John Gill in which I have not read something from his pen. He, by far, my favourite writer.George Ella has been used of God to give the Christian public an opportunity to understand and appreciate one of the giants of church history in this thoroughly researched biography. As I recommend Gill's writings to anyone who wants to understand the Bible, I heartily recommend George Ella's biography to anyone who wants to understand Gill.' Don Fortner Biographical table 1.
