The Artist's Library

The Artist's Library

Coffee House Press

Creativity, like information, is free to everyone who steps into a library. The Artist's Library offers the idea that an artist is any person who uses creative tools to make new things, and the guidance and resources to make libraries of all sizes and shapes come alive as spaces for art-making and cultural engagement. Case studies included in the book range from the crafty (pop-up books) to the community-minded (library galleries) to documentary (photo projects) to the technically complex ("listening" to libraries via Dewey decimal frequencies). The Library as Incubator Project was created by Erinn Batykefer, Laura Damon-Moore, and Christina Endres. It highlights the ways that libraries and artists can work together, and works to strengthen these partnerships. By calling attention to one of the many reasons libraries are important to our communities and our culture, it provides a dynamic online forum for sharing ideas. Erinn Batykefer is a librarian, a writer, and a lifelong do-it-yourselfer. She earned an MFA in writing and a Master of Library and Information Studies from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Her first poetry collection, Allegheny, Monongahela, won the Benjamin Saltman Poetry Prize. Laura Damon-Moore is a librarian, blogger, and avid art-maker in her spare time. Laura received her master's degree in Library and Information Studies from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2012. Jessica Pigza is the assistant curator in the New York Public Library's Rare Book Division. She also writes on handmade material culture, DIY, and handicrafts at Hand-Made Librarian.

Using the confluence of rivers in Pittsburgh as a metaphorical lens, Allegheny, Monongahela probes the ruinous misalignment between the external and internal lives of two sisters and their childhood in Western Pennsylvania. Their complex and difficult relationship is the spine of the collection, told obliquely through a series of sonnets and ekphrastic meditations on the paintings of Georgia O'Keeffe: the ways in which they separately navigate a violent family history that reverberates through their present and futures; their polarized impulses toward creativity and self-destruction. Rooted in a mutable, watery landscape that is not consistently recognizable, Allegheny, Monongahela investigates the collisions between the world and the self, the fissured identities that result, and the ways in which art may heal or fail to heal the cracks.

My students were eager to find out if there would be a Fiona sequel This book touches the heart and brings to light the emotional roller coaster foster kids ride every day. A great book for deep classroom discussion." -Chris Kawchak, Teacher "Fiona, Forever? is a lively, heartwarming tale of a girl growing up in foster care, and her hearts desire to find a family. Gender and the Race for Space

Gender and the Race for Space

The American astronaut image was informed by early Cold War ideals of masculinity that helped mold a distinctly American (anti-communist) masculinity, which appeared—on the surface anyway—to resolve not only an American “crisis of masculinity” but helped win the Cold War on an ideological and popular level. This American image focused on strict gender binaries of man as the protector, controlling technology and containing communism, while woman was the passive actor with spaceflight technology—left behind in the home waiting for the return of the astronaut husband. Allowing women to fly into space would have represented a lack of individual control with spaceflight technology.

Inhabiting the claustrophobia of marriage and domestic life, Erinn Batykefer’s poems use the deeply personal as the lens through which she investigates larger cultural ideas. She reckons with feeling simultaneously large and small, finding ways to face herself, and the need to be seen while within the confines of intimate relationships. Honest and explorative, these poems lead us through moments of fluctuation and faltering.

This book explores how, why, and with what consequences one no-excuses charter network marketizes teaching and learning, through the author’s 1000 hours of covert participant observation at a network charter school. In her research, Brooks found that the “AAG” (pseudonym) network re-conceptualized teaching by urging staff to envision their careers in corporate education rather than in classroom teaching. While some employees received a boost up the corporate ladder, others found themselves being pushed out of the organization. Despite AAG’s equity-conscious discourse, administrators emphasized controlling student behavior as a central measure of teaching effectiveness. Brooks develops the concept of creative compliance to describe the most successful teachers’ tactics for adhering to formal policies strategically, bending the rules in order to survive and advance in a workplace fraught with competition and insecurity.

An Empirical Study of Post-Soviet Sustainable Development
This book investigates which factors can be shown to have had a significant strengthening or dampening effect on sustainable development in the post-Soviet space. To examine this question empirically, sustainable development is be considered the dependent variable, measured according to four indicators: a) the poverty headcount ratio at national poverty lines, b) child mortality per 1,000 live births, c), the percentage of the population using safely managed drinking water services and d) the percentage of the population using the Internet (tested as both a y and an x variable). The testing was conducted by using multivariate regressions to investigate estimate models of the interaction between the aforementioned dependent variables and several independent variables, including a) mean years of schooling in the population aged 25 and older, b) percentage of the GDP made up of natural resource rents, c) the percentage of merchandise exports made up of manufactured goods, d) the percentage of GDP made up of personal remittances received, e) incidence of bribery (as an indicator of rule of law), f) attitudes towards Islam (in Muslim-majority countries), and g) level of democratization.

Vulnerability

Vulnerability

Vulnerability has become a focal point in myriad scholarly and applied fields as well as a touchstone in popular culture and discourse. Vulnerability defines our condition as human beings – our openness to being affected by others, our susceptibility to injury, our mortality, our uncertainty. Vulnerability underlies how we think, feel, and exist. To be alive is simply to be vulnerable. Negotiations with our own vulnerability and that of others shape our ways of life, both individual and sociopolitical. And we live at a time when a sense of vulnerability to harm is omnipresent, not just from physical conflict, but from misogynist and racist violence, environmental catastrophe, global pandemics, and unabated climate change. Vulnerability is also a precondition for caring about and for others. Categorizing people as “vulnerable” or "at risk" determines much of our social welfare and healthcare policies, as well as society's conception of what it is to be a mature, capable adult human. Erinn Gilson takes a philosophical lens to vulnerability and explores its meaning and significance, seeking to illuminate some of its complexity as an experience and condition. In particular, she considers how we might approach situations of significant vulnerability to harm differently by holding onto a more expansive sense of what vulnerability is and means.

Building on comprehensive research conducted in US schools, this accessible volume offers an effective model of school leadership to develop and implement school-wide, trauma-responsive approaches to student discipline.Recognizing that challenging student behaviours are often rooted in early experiences of trauma, the volume builds on a model from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) to walk readers through the processes of realizing, recognizing, responding to, and resisting the impacts of trauma in school contexts. Research and interviews model an educational reform process and explain how a range of differentiated interventions including Positive Behaviour Interventions and Supports (PBIS), social-emotional learning (SEL), restorative justice, and family engagement can be used to boost student resilience and pro-social behaviour. Practical steps are supported by current theory, resources, and stories of implementation from superintendents, principals, and teachers. This text will benefit school leaders, teachers, and counsellors with an interest in restorative student discipline, emotional and behavioural difficulties in young people, and PreK-12 education more broadly. Those interested in school psychology, trauma studies, and trauma counselling with children and adolescents will also benefit from the volume.
