Kate Jameson married a man who would never abandon her. Or so she thought. Weeks after their son is born, Eric Wiley leaves the country, claiming an emergency at work. When he doesn't return, Kate questions his commitment as well as her own choices. With the help of a friend, she digs into Eric's past, determined to learn what he's hiding. But unraveling this endless mystery draws her into a maze of lies, family secrets and deadly consequences. For twenty years, undercover CIA agent Eric Wiley lived for one reason-to avenge his parents' brutal deaths. Until he met Kate Jameson and devoted himself to her. Eric's competing promises constantly collide, offering him little chance of keeping either. When an informant lures him to Mexico, shortly after his son's birth, Eric thinks his goal of apprehending the elusive killer will be realized. Leaving his family for a few short days would be worth the prize. Can this final mission bring closure and allow Eric to be the husband Kate deserves and the father he yearns to be? Or will their destiny remain mired in the ghosts of his past, leaving them powerless to embrace their present?

A large majority of secondary school students fail to reach proficiency in math and science, and many are taught by teachers lacking adequate subject matter knowledge. When compared to other nations, the math and science achievement of U.S. pupils and the rate of STEM degree attainment appear inconsistent with a nation considered the world leader in scientific innovation. In a recent international assessment of 15-year old students, the U.S. ranked 28th in math literacy and 24th in science literacy. Moreover, the U.S. ranks 20th among all nations in the proportion of 24-year olds who earn degrees in natural science or engineering. This book provides background and context to understand the legislative developments in STEM and examines the federal role in promoting STEM education and policy.

The First Adirondackers

The First Adirondackers

The First Adirondackers challenges the widespread, long-standing belief that the Adirondack uplands of northern New York were uninhabited before the arrival of European colonizers. Nothing could be farther from the truth. Through local indigenous traditions and supporting findings by natural science, authors David Fadden and Curt Stager expose, document, and honor the long human presence in the Adirondacks, helping not only to redefine what it means to be an Adirondacker, but also contributing to a more complete understanding of America itself. Like the upland mosaic of public and private lands that it describes, The First Adirondackers is a cultural crossroads in which Indigenous and Western worldviews meet, both figuratively and in the personal lives of the co-authors. Together, they use their different cultural backgrounds and professional expertise to reveal the human history of the uplands, the region defined as everything situated between 1000 feet elevation and the top of Mount Marcy, a mile above sea level. Fadden, a master storyteller and renowned painter, uses traditional oral history and stunning works of art to capture the humanity and vitality of Indigenous peoples of the region. Stager, a natural science professor at Paul Smith's College, explains in scientific terms how people are elementally linked to the land, species, and waters of the Champlain-Adirondack region through his own research on the environmental history of the region and by documenting more than three dozen locations in the uplands where ancient items of Indigenous origin have been found. By challenging the predominant Eurocentric narrative of the Adirondacks, The First Adirondackers does not seek to erase history, but rather to help recover a proud and wonderful history.

Long ago, when the birds had no songs, only man could sing. When the Great Spirit walked on the Earth, he noticed a great silence. He realized the birds had no songs. He devised a great game and told the birds who ever could fly the highest, would receive a very beautiful song. But not all the birds were honest. In his desire to win the game, the small hermit thrush jumped on the back of the great eagle. The eagle flew higher than any of the birds, but when he came back to land, the Great Spirit said the hermit thrush had gone the highest since he was on the eagle's back. Hermit thrush was awarded a beautiful song, but in his shame for not being honest, he flew into the deep woods. To this day, you may hear the lovely song of the hermit thrush, but you may not ever see him.

This challenging book is based on the experience of the pioneering Buckingham project, a comprehensive mental health service focusing on primary care, and describes a new approach to the provision of mental health service to a community. Using the vulnerability-stress model of mental illness, the authors place their findings and recommendations in the wider context of mental health care provision, and draw widely on international research in this field. They insist on a rigorous approach to the provision and evaluation of care, and use telling case studies to reveal the benefits as well as some of the difficulties that may be experienced. The practical and cost effective approach described will be of the greatest interest to health care professionals in whatever treatment setting they may be working.
