On a Thursday morning in 1981, four thousand campesinos (fieldworkers), fleeing a US-funded Salvadoran death squad, stumbled down the rocky, overgrown side of a hill to the Lempa River. Some were mown down by machine guns and the strafing of helicopters; others drowned as they were swept away by the river. The rest escaped to live the next eight years in UN refugee camps in Honduras. In 1989 many of these refugees returned to El Salvador as the repatriated community of Valle Nuevo. Companeros tells the stories of a twenty-five year relationship of accompaniment, healing, and forgiveness between Valle Nuevo and a small association of churches in the United States, Shalom Mission Communities. The two groups have come to embrace a transnational communion with one another despite the economic, political, and spiritual chasms that exist today. This work is a collective, collaborative effort of storytelling and theological reflection, interweaving oral and written accounts of suffering, thanksgiving, sharing, remembering, and proclaiming the death of Christ until he comes again. ""The challenging model described in this powerful story of Christian community will leave you rethinking what it means for churches to 'do missions.' The intentional and sustainable relationships built over decades between a campesino community in El Salvador and U.S. churches has brought about genuine change. I am proud that Habitat for Humanity of El Salvador has been such a creative and prominent player in this amazing story of faith."" -- Jonathan T. M. Reckford, Chief Executive Officer, Habitat for Humanity International ""A powerful story of twenty-five years of companionship, solidarity, and ultimately hope as a community in the United States seeks to walk alongside a community in El Salvador as it struggles to both remember and build a new life in the aftermath of the horrific civil war. Companeros is theologically rich and historically compelling while also offering churches considering transnational partnerships much to consider and learn from."" --VICTOR J. This hands-on activity lets students assume the role of crime scene investigators as they use science to examine the evidence and find the guilty person. After the crime scene is presented, students use observation, critical thinking, and basic chemistry to determine which of the suspects took the missing lunch. The unit includes instructions for setting up the crime scene and the seven analysis stations, as well as worksheets for recording the results of students' experiments and analyzing the outcomes. Combining science, observation, reading, thinking, and note taking, this simulation is easy to use and will challenge students to use higher order thinking skills. Allow your students to solve more mysteries with Crime Scene Detective, Detective Club, Mystery Disease, The Great Chocolate Caper, and The Loose Caboose.
Every murder has a story. Every story begins at home.Tampa newscaster Tori Younger is saddened to learn her childhood friend, Brooke Martin, hung herself from the old water tower in their hometown. Tori hasn't spoken to Brooke in years and doesn't feel comfortable returning to attend the services. Then cryptic text messages from Brooke's cellphone change her mind.Attending the funeral, Tori confronts a past that still haunts her and questions the text messages haunting her now. Her investigation leads to a fact she suspected all along: her old friend didn't commit suicide but was murdered. There's no shortage of suspects either: Brooke's angry husband who instigated a fight the night she died; Brooke's high school principal who denies rumors they were having an affair; and a town sheriff who shares a stormy past with Tori and is blocking her investigation at every turn. The only witness appears to be Brooke's five-year-old daughter who hasn't spoken since the tragedy and continually draws the same graphic picture of the night her mother's body was discovered hanging from that old water tower.Tori knows one of them has Brooke's cellphone and is texting her from it. Others are convinced it's Brooke reaching out from the Great Beyond. Either way, someone from her past is playing a deadly game of Hangman.
