Geoffrey of Monmouth, a twelfth-century cleric, was the first person to compose a detailed and continuous history of Britain from its origins to the domination of the Anglo-Saxons. His writings were enormously popular throughout the western European world, and he is justly credited with bringing 'The Matter of Britain' (including, most notably, the figure of Arthur) to a much wider audience. The vast popularity of this material has persisted to the present day, mainly but not solely in the interest shown in 'King Arthur'. This book illustrates the close ties between Geoffrey's notion of British and Arthurian society and other materials from medieval Wales and Ireland.
This study of Geoffrey Chaucer addresses both recent theoretical approaches to his work, as well as various popular tropes – ‘Father of English Poetry’, poet of ‘Merrie England’ – that have enshrined his status within a nationalist ideology. Feminist criticism and the work of Bakhtin receive particular attention as two of the most prominent concerns in recent Chaucer studies, and new readings that reconsider the political and social context of his writings are also discussed. Full allowance is paid to his Chaucer’s pre-Tales works, alongside the Canterbury Tales themselves.
A clear introductory account of the work of Geoffrey Hill, who is widely regarded as one of the finest British poets of our time.
Geoffrey Chaucer and the Poetics of Disguise

This work considers virtually all of Geoffrey Chaucer's writings as disguised reflections of matters personal and political. Chaucer wrote in a particularly crucial time of political change in England. He was in a unique position to see and hear more than he dared to express. He developed a 'poetics of disguise' to express his increasingly critical views of British royalty without seeming to criticize or dissent. He utilized the voices of women, pagans, personified abstractions, and birds to create a debate about the social and political issues of the day. New readings of his major works including his short poems are included in this unique analysis.
