Making use of archival resources in the United Kingdom and the United States, Regina B. Oost examines advertisements, promotional materials, and programs, as well as letters, diaries, and account books, to reconstruct the ways in which Richard D'Oyly Carte, W.S. Gilbert, and Arthur Sullivan attracted and shaped the expectations of theatergoers. Her findings place the Savoy operas in the context of other West End productions, considering similarities between Carte's promotional methods and those of managers Henry Irving, John Hollingshead, and Marie and Squire Bancroft. While all of these managers astutely understood patronage of a middle-class audience to be key to their success, the Savoy collaborators made strategic use of circumstances unique to their situation to distinguish Gilbert and Sullivan operas from contemporary theatrical fare. From Trial by Jury (1875) through The Grand Duke (1896), the Savoy operas celebrated the commodity culture beloved of the urban middle classes, validated a moral code that secured the social privileges audience members cherished, and ultimately provided a new model of British national identity that replaced the agrarian ideal espoused by earlier generations. Written in admirably accessible and jargon-free prose, Oost's book will appeal to scholars of theater history, literature, music, and popular culture, as well as general readers interested in Gilbert and Sullivan and the history of the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company.

This first book-length study of Irish educator, clergyman, and author Gilbert Austin as an elocutionary rhetor investigates how his work informs contemporary scholarship on delivery, rhetorical history and theory, and embodied communication. Authors Sara Newman and Sigrid Streit study Austin’s theoretical system, outlined in his 1806 book Chironomia; or A Treatise on Rhetorical Delivery—an innovative study of gestures as a viable, independent language—and consider how Austin’s efforts to incorporate movement and integrate texts and images intersect with present-day interdisciplinary studies of embodiment. Austin did not simply categorize gesture mechanically, separating delivery from rhetoric and the discipline’s overall goals, but instead he provided a theoretical framework of written descriptions and illustrations that positions delivery as central to effective rhetoric and civic interactions. Balancing the variable physical elements of human interactions as well as the demands of communication, Austin’s system fortuitously anticipated contemporary inquiries into embodied and nonverbal communication. Enlightenment rhetoricians, scientists, and physicians relied on sympathy and its attendant vivacious and lively ideas to convey feelings and facts to their varied audiences. During the seventeenth and eighteenth-centuries, as these disciplines formed increasingly distinct, specialized boundaries, they repurposed existing, shared communication conventions to new ends. While the emerging standards necessarily diverged, each was grounded in the subjective, embodied bedrock of the sympathetic, magical tradition.

This catalogue documents the 2024–25 exhibition at The Gilbert & George Centre. Gilbert & George’s London Pictures, created in 2011, are their largest group of works, inspired by a collection of 3,712 newspaper posters carefully amassed and sorted by the artists over several years. In their words, ‘London is the most important part of our inspiration. It is all that surrounds us’, and the artworks articulate the magnificence and sordidness of London life. The posters’ headlines announce violence, passion, misery and greed, a veritable torrent of human existence. Writer and novelist Michael Bracewell’s essay, written in 2011, considers how Gilbert & George came to know London by roaming the streets as Dickens did a century earlier, absorbing the city in exact proportion to the manner the city absorbed them. He depicts the London Pictures as the cumulative force and intensity of the pair’s art to date. The trajectory of Gilbert Sorrentino's literary life can be tracked in this bibliography, from his first short story in a 1956 issue of his college literary magazine, through his involvement with the New York publishing scene in the 1960s and 1970s, and finally into the 1980s and early 1990, when his work, as at the beginning, once again is being published by small presses. The bibliography treats writings both by and about Sorrentino, uniting in one volume exhaustive descriptive analyses of primary works with annotated treatment of secondary sources. Gilbert Onderdonk traveled to Texas in 1851 as a twenty-two-year-old invalid in search of health. By the time of his death in 1920 at the robust age of ninety-one, he had been a pioneer botanist and horticulturist, a rancher, a Confederate soldier, a traveler throughout Mexico for the U.S. Department of Agriculture, a prolific letter writer and essayist, a travel writer for newspapers, and a man of family, property, international recognition, and fame among horticultural experts in Europe for his work in South Texas. It was Gilbert Onderdonk who began and developed production of fruit in Texas and contributed much to the knowledge and later work of Luther Burbank in California. Onderdonk literally planted the foundation of the vast production of Texas fruit today. From Onderdonk's letters and travelogues, Oppenheimer weaves a biography that tells of roping wild mustangs, of growing and shipping fruits and seedlings to growers as far distant as France, and of writing the first popular travel reports on Mexico. The earliest catalogs from the nursery business that Onderdonk had begun in 1870 are most striking for his sparkling writing and drawings, as well as his astute forecasts of agriculture in the state. His 1888 catalogue is reproduced in the book.
