Risk Assessment in Geotechnical Engineering

Risk Assessment in Geotechnical Engineering

Gordon A. Fenton; D. V. Griffiths

John Wiley Sons Inc
2008
sidottu
NEW PROBABILISTIC APPROACHES FOR REALISTIC RISK ASSESSMENT IN GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEERING. This text presents a thorough examination of the theories and methodologies available for risk assessment in geotechnical engineering, spanning the full range from established single-variable and "first order" methods to the most recent, advanced numerical developments. In response to the growing application of LRFD methodologies in geotechnical design, coupled with increased demand for risk assessments from clients ranging from regulatory agencies to insurance companies, authors Fenton and Griffiths have introduced an innovative reliability-based risk assessment method, the Random Finite Element Method (RFEM). The authors have spent more than fifteen years developing this statistically based method for modeling the real spatial variability of soils and rocks. As demonstrated in the book, RFEM performs better in real-world applications than traditional risk assessment tools that do not properly account for the spatial variability of geomaterials. This text is divided into two parts: Part One, Theory, explains the theory underlying risk assessment methods in geotechnical engineering. This part's seven chapters feature more than 100 worked examples, enabling you to develop a detailed understanding of the methods. Part Two, Practice, demonstrates how to use advanced probabilistic tools for several classical geotechnical engineering applications. Working with the RFEM, the authors show how to assess risk in problems familiar to all geotechnical engineers. All the programs used for the geotechnical applications discussed in Part Two may be downloaded from the authors' Web site at www.engmath.dal.ca/rfem/ at no charge, enabling you to duplicate the authors' results and experiment with your own data. In short, you get all the theory and practical guidance you need to apply the most advanced probabilistic approaches for managing uncertainty in geotechnical design.
Biological Treatment of Hazardous Wastes

Biological Treatment of Hazardous Wastes

Gordon A. Lewandowski; Louis J. DeFilippi

John Wiley Sons Inc
1997
sidottu
This volume covers both the fundamental principles and practical applications of the biological treatment of hazardous wastes. Biotreatment techniques can be used to control and change environmental conditions (oxygen content, chemical composition, temperature, etc.), and to help transform these wastes into acceptable products in a cost-effective manner. The text includes information on hydrogreological, engineering and microbiological fundamentals.
Valence Bond Methods

Valence Bond Methods

Gordon A. Gallup

Cambridge University Press
2005
pokkari
Valence bond theory is one of two commonly used methods in molecular quantum mechanics, the other is molecular orbital theory. This book focuses on the first of these methods, ab initio valence bond theory. The book is split into two parts. Part I gives simple examples of two-electron calculations and the necessary theory to extend these to larger systems. Part II gives a set of case studies of related molecule sets designed to show the nature of the valence bond description of molecular structure. It also highlights the stability of this description to varying basis sets. There are references to the CRUNCH computer program for molecular structure calculations which is currently available in the public domain. The book will be of primary interest to researchers and students working on electronic theory and computation in chemistry and chemical physics.

How Leaders Learn

How Leaders Learn

Gordon A. Donaldson

Teachers' College Press
2008

How Leaders Learn portrays the developmental experiences of educators seeking to become accomplished leaders in their schools. The author presents a new model of leadership knowledge - the Interpersonal-Cognitive-Intrapersonal Model (I-C-I). Through the stories of teacher leaders and administrators who participated in the I-C-I leadership development programs, the author depicts the evolution of understanding, skill, and self-confidence. These learners grapple with questions essential to all effective leadership: Does my leadership generate improved learning for the students in my school? What are my greatest assets as a leader? What are my greatest liabilities and what do I do about them? Can I find a leadership role that is both productive and sustainable for me and for the school I serve?
The Battle of Koniggratz

The Battle of Koniggratz

Gordon A. Craig

University of Pennsylvania Press
2003
nidottu
Koniggratz, a city overlooking the river Elbe, was a western strongpoint of the Austrian Empire. On the morning of July 3, 1866, Prussia attacked the city against high odds and defeated the Austrian army in a single day, despite the Austrian advantage in heavy artillery and command of the high ground. The fall of Koniggratz transferred power over the German states from Austria to Prussia, marking the beginning of the German nation, a political consequence considered to be among the most important of any conflict in modern history. The battle for the city of Koniggratz-now called Hradec Kralove, located in the Czech Republic-was the largest of its time, with nearly half a million troops involved. It was also the first battle where the outcome was directly determined by the availability of new technologies, including the railroad, telegraph, cast steel rifled cannon, and breech-loading rifle. It also marked a lesson in the fallacy of dependence on technology at the expense of sound strategy. In this full account, distinguished historian Gordon A. Craig discusses the state of political affairs surrounding the battle, the personalities involved, the weaponry, and the tactics in order to recreate the battlefield in all its complexity.
Policymaking for Critical Infrastructure

Policymaking for Critical Infrastructure

Gordon A. Gow

CRC Press Inc
2019
sidottu
Originally published in 2005. By weaving together three distinct fields - public policy, technology studies and management of critical infrastructure - this volume shows how public policy can help to improve the management of large technical systems. A much-needed analytical framework, based on approaches drawn from established work in science and technology studies, is applied to a case study of the development of a new public safety service for mobile telephones. This example of emerging growth and change in critical infrastructure allows Gordon Gow to identify current problem areas and to refine a more general set of strategies aimed at improving public policy processes in the management of technology. The work also discusses a range of contemporary issues in telecom policy and regulation, such as public consultation, technical standards, network unbundling and interconnection. This insightful work provides observations and recommendations for policy makers, regulators, industry and consumer groups alike, furthering the improved coordination of efforts across these domains of interest.

Gordon A. Craig (1913-2005), one of America's most distinguished historians of modern Germany, was an indefatigable essayist. This volume gathers previously uncollected articles from the last quarter of a career that spanned six decades. Placing politics in the perspective of culture, and culture in the perspective of politics, these essays examine the persistent tension between liberalism and militarism in German history, and include the author's reflections on political leadership, intellectual creativity, and military catastrophe.

Over the centuries since its founding, the landlocked and iron-poor realm of Galesia has developed a social and religious horror of Mechanical devices. But the modern world is creeping through the mountain passes. Farm machinery and the printing press have already arrived; steam engines and repeating rifles are on the way. How will these backward people cope? And in this realm, so removed from the rest of its world, we find Aleria, equally out of touch with her society. Her loving parents despair for her future, in fear that her next prank will prove harmful to herself or someone else. Only a few close friends support her. And then one of her stunts goes wrong and throws her into an ordeal that destroys her confidence and cripples her emotions. Seeking a solution, Aleria starts down an unusual path for one of her station. Her Battle Arts Master warns her, "Use violence to solve a problem and you become a different person. Violence will be one of your options for the rest of your life. There is no going back."That suits Aleria. For her, there has always been only one direction: forward.

Even the sturdy presence of her guard Captain, Erlon, with his hand-and-a-half sword, and the handsome but diffident Kolwyn anLlannon, inheritor of the lore of the Old Ones, can protect her party if she makes the wrong move.
