Guy LaBree's connection to the Seminole Tribe of Florida began when he was an elementary school student in the 1940s living near the Dania (now Hollywood) reservation in Florida. However, it wasn't until the 1970s that his relationship with the tribe grew into a remarkable creative partnership. LaBree was encouraged by Seminoles who were former classmates and friends to produce paintings depicting important teachings about Seminole culture, customs, history, and legend as a way of passing on traditional knowledge to younger generations. To do this, he was given unprecedented access to privileged information never before shared with outsiders. As a sign of his success, two of his images now hang in the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of the American Indian. This book features forty-two stunning selections from this self-taught artist's output of more than 1,000 paintings. John Townsend Trowbridge (1827-1916) was a prolific American writer whose novels, plays, and poems, though critically acclaimed in his day, have with good reason not been remembered. He wrote one poem, however, that has been unfairly consigned to oblivion. Guy Vernon, a long seriocomic work about race, racism, and sexual intrigue in antebellum America, was first published in 1878 in A Masque of Poets, an anthology of anonymous poems featuring works by Louisa May Alcott, James Russell Lowell, Henry David Thoreau, and Emily Dickinson (whose contribution was her only poem to be published in book form during her life).Guy Vernon is a novelette in verse portraying an unhappy marriage between North and South on the eve of the Civil War. Guy Vernon, a dashing plantation owner, takes as his wife a penniless young charmer named Florinda whom he meets at the Saratoga balls. Guy of Warwick and Other Chapbook Romances
Chapbooks formed the staple reading matter of ordinary people during the eighteenth and much of the nineteenth centuries; they were also read by children of the gentry. They included fiction, almanacs, religious guidance and radical political tracts, and were available throughout the British Isles and in colonial America. The chapbook romances included in this volume derive from tales of chivalric adventure and courtly love current in the Middle Ages or the Renaissance. They have features in common with similar texts which were available all over Europe. The six chapbooks in this volume all derive from romances which were current in the Middle Ages or the Renaissance, and provide a fascinating window on the mental world of rural England and America before the advent of mass media. No previous attempt has been made to produce the full text of a selection of chapbooks for the modern reader; they have remained the province of specialist bibliographers and antiquarians.
