This monograph covers the topic of Wireless for Machine Learning (ML). Although the general intersection of ML and wireless communications is currently a prolific field of research that has already generated multiple publications, there is little review work on Wireless for ML. As data generation increasingly takes place on devices without a wired connection, ML related traffic will be ubiquitous in wireless networks. Research has shown that traditional wireless protocols are highly inefficient or unsustainable to support ML, which creates the need for new wireless communication methods. This monograph gives an exhaustive review of the state-of-the-art wireless methods that are specifically designed to support ML services over distributed datasets. Currently, there are two clear themes within the literature, analog over-the-air computation and digital radio resource management optimized for ML. A comprehensive introduction to these methods is presented, reviews are made of the most important works, open problems are highlighted and application scenarios are discussed.

This volume is one in a series of monographs being issued under the general title of "Disorders of Human Communication". Each monograph deals in detail with a particular aspect of vocal communication and its disorders, and is written by internationally distinguished experts. Therefore, the series will provide an authoritative source of up-to-date scientific and clinical informa tion relating to the whole field of normal and abnormal speech communication, and as such will succeed the earlier monumental work "Handbuch der Stimm und Sprachheilkunde" by R. Luchsinger and G. E. Arnold (last issued in 1970). This series will prove invaluable for clinicians, teachers and research workers in phoniatrics and logopaedics, phonetics and linguistics, speech pathology, otolaryngology, neurology and neurosurgery, psychology and psychiatry, paediatrics and audiology. Several of the monographs will also be useful to voice and singing teachers, and to their pupils. G. E. Arnold, Jackson, Miss. F. Winckel, Berlin B. D. Wyke, London Preface Neurologists, neuropsychologists, speech pathologists and other clinicians who care for dysphasic patients have often complained that available books on dysphasia tend to be parochially theoretical, and insufficiently directed towards clinical reality. These books provide the categories, labels, and theoretical speculations of one school or another; but dysphasic patients as often as not do not fit neatly into a specific theoretical category. Clinical patterns of dysphasic syndromes of most patients with dysphasia rarely conform fully to the pictures painted in the textbooks.

With this issue we initiate the policy of expanding the scope of Tulane Studies in Philosophy to include, in addition to the work of members of the department, contributions from philosophers who have earned advanced degrees from Tulane and who are now teaching in other colleges and universities. The Editor THE LOGIC OF OUR LANGUAGE ROBERT L. ARRINGTON Wittgenstein wrote in the Tractatus that "logic is not a body of doctrine, but a mirror-image of the world. " 1 In line with his suggestion that a proposition is a 'picture', Wittgenstein argued that propositions 'show' the logical structure of the real. He was insistent, however, that "the apparent logical form of a proposition need not be its real one. " 2 As a result of this we can misunderstand the structure of fact. Philosophical problems arise just when "the logic of our language is mis understood. " 3 It is common knowledge that much of this view of logic was rejected by Wittgenstein himself in the Philosophical Investi gations. There we are told that language has no ideal or sublime 4 logic which mirrors the structure of the extra-linguistic world. Consequently, inferences from the structure of language to the structure of that extra-linguistic world are invalid. Reality can be 'cut up' in any of a number of ways by language. Wittgenstein adopted a view of philosophy which would render that discipline a non-explanatory, non-critical study of the multiple ways in which language can be used.

Elizabeth Shepard

PENGUIN BOOKS

Recommended reading by the National Mental Health Association. To his mother, twelve-year-old Benjamin Sherman is an object of pity and anxiety. To his father, he is bizarre and embarrassing. To his psychiatrist, he is a case study in mental illness. To the counselors at the camp where he is spending his summer, Benjamin is a "freaky kid" who shuns his peers and is strangely--and perhaps dangerously--attached to his best friend, Elliot, a stuffed letter H. Through the letters of his sister, mother, father, camp counselors, and psychiatrist--and, most touchingly, through those Benjamin writes to Elliot--this audacious and utterly unsentimental novel gives us a moving and sometimes shocking intimacy with a child whose disorder may be a kind of fragile genius. H is an astute, sympathetic evocation of the state we persist in calling "madness." "A new and mind-boggling perspective on mental illness from the point of view of the sufferer and those who would love and care about him. . . . H is a very poignant, enthralling debut."--The Boston Globe "Shepard is a reverse archaeologist, designing a tiny contemporary lost world for readers to excavate. . . . Everything matters. . . Shepard gets everything right."--New York magazine

Philippe Sollers

Philippe Sollers' groundbreaking 1973 novel, H, was inspired by the May 1968 Paris student/worker uprising, and, in its own right, performs a revolt against much that's been (and still is) taken for granted in the belles lettres.Described as "a music that is inscribed in language, becoming the object of its own reasoning" (Julia Kristeva) and as an "unpunctuated wall of words, an extremely active ...] mass of language" (David Hayman), H does away with plot, character and setting-and, on the typographical level, with punctuation, capitalisation, or paragraph breaks-in order to attempt what Sollers himself called "an external polylogue."The text performs an infinite fragmentation of subjectivity into a plethora of ventriloquized voices where "words turn round and come back, producing a material fullness of pleasures" and "everything is organized into a splendid series of irrelevancies" (Roland Barthes). It is this fulness of H, this "suffocation" it produces, that might be, with Barthes, termed its "beauty."Accommodating a vast range of tonalities, attitudes, modes, and ideologies, H makes a case in point of how a literary work should function according to Sollers: "A work exists by itself only potentially, and its actualization (or production) depends on its readings and on the moments at which these readings actively take place."H (translated by Veronika Stankovianska & David Vichnar) will become the first English-language translation of this influential experimental text.

College rule (also known as medium ruled paper) is the most common lined paper in use in the United States. It is generally used in middle school through to college and is also popular with adults. This is a good choice for teen or adult notebooks and composition books (known as exercise books outside the US).
