What is recognition and why is it so important? This book develops a synoptic conception of the significance of recognition in its many forms for human persons by means of a rational reconstruction and internal critique of classical and contemporary accounts.The book begins with a clarification of several fundamental questions concerning recognition. It then reconstructs the core ideas of Fichte, Hegel, Taylor, Fraser, and Honneth and utilizes the insights and conceptual tools developed across these chapters for developing a case for the universal importance of recognition for humans. It argues in favour of a universalist anthropological position, unusual in the literature on recognition, that aims to construe a philosophically sound basis for a discourse of common humanity, or of a shared human life-form for which moral relations of recognition are essential. This synthetic conception of the importance of recognition provides tools for articulating deep intuitions shared across cultures about what makes human life and forms of human co-existence better or worse, and thus tools for mutual understanding about the deepest shared concerns of humanity, or of what makes us all human persons despite our differences.Recognition and the Human Life-Form will appeal to readers interested in philosophical anthropology, social and political philosophy, critical theory, and the history of philosophy. Despite its current dominant status, economic growth emerged as a field of study and as a political objective only after the Second World War. This book provides an alternative perspective to the Anglo-centric historical analysis of growth by turning the focus on Finland and other Nordic countries from the late 19th century until the Second World War. Moreover, it provides a conceptual history perspective to how economic growth can be examined before the emergence of economic growth as a concept.This book places Finland in the context of emerging nation-states of the early 20th-century Europe and constructs five competing growth conceptions: classical liberal, agrarian conservative, social liberal, social democratic, and communist. With a methodology derived from conceptual history, this book presents a framework to study economic growth in the context of nationalism. It showcases how ideas related to growth have not been synonymous with capitalism, but rather they have been connected to state-building and to comparison of economic systems. Building on post-Keynesian economic theory and classical theories of imperialism, the book discusses anticipations that neoliberalism will push the world into a new era of insecurity, confrontations, armaments, and wars.Part I of this volume delves into the acute geopolitical landscape, especially the war in Ukraine. Whether we talk about human learning and unlearning, securitization, or political economy, the forces and mechanisms generating both globalization and disintegration are causally efficacious across the world. Thus, the processes that led to the victory of the ‘Leave’ campaign in the June 2016 referendum on UK European Union membership are not simply confined to the United Kingdom, or even Europe. Similarly, conflict in Ukraine and the presidency of Donald Trump hold implications for a stage much wider than EU-Russia or the United States alone.Patomäki explores the world-historical mechanisms and processes that have created the conditions for the world’s current predicaments and, arguably, involve potential for better futures. Operationally, he relies on the philosophy of dialectical critical realism and on the methods of contemporary social sciences, exploring how crises, learning and politics are interwoven through uneven wealth-accumulation and problematical growth-dynamics. Seeking to illuminate the causes of the currently prevailing tendencies towards disintegration, antagonism and – ultimately – war, he also shows how these developments are in fact embedded in deeper processes of human learning. The book embraces a Wellsian warning about the increasingly likely possibility of a military disaster, but its central objective is to further enlightenment and holoreflexivity within the current world-historical conjuncture.
