It Could Be Magic... How The Music of Barry Manilow Changed My Life!: And The Journey Ever Since...
'It Could Be Magic...' shares the intimate details of how the innate power of music led one woman's personal journey of self-discovery, reinvention and deep gratitude for all that was, is and has yet to be. This true life story touches the heart and soul of anyone who's ever felt anesthetized in the life they are living. It's an especially insightful and inspirational exploration for woman who while lovingly entrenched in nurturing those around them, have lost balance of perspective; ceasing to be the "shero" of their own life. In addition, it is a powerful reminder to everyone, to fully engage with and find bliss in all that surrounds us in the present moment, while embracing with profound gratitude the gifts we've been blessed with. It's also a powerful reminder for each of us to never stop dreaming, setting goals and having faith in the knowledge "that what's meant to be, will be", but be mindful that we each need to take responsibility for seeking out what it is that's meant to be. In 2007 Ms. Holdun had reached an "intersection in the road of life when where she was, was where she thought she needed to remain". It was the opening notes of (Barry) Manilow's infamous "Could It Be Magic" that led the author on a path where she would discover all that life still had to offer, while at the same time dissipated her bubble of numb indifference to the world around her. During a career that spans four decades, Barry Manilow's music and his unique talent of poignant delivery, has inspired millions of listeners to "feel". However, it wasn't until Helen Holdun published, 'It Could Be Magic...'; that an in-depth, true-life account had been told about Mr. Manilow's music being the catalyst to transforming a life This book is not a glib sharing of being a fan of the musician. It is, as Author and radio-host, Nicholas Snow, who provided the books world-wide launch via his blog-talk radio show explains: 'It Could Be Magic...' isn't so much about Barry and the power of his music as it is about the courage to answer the question, 'Is this all there is', and reinvent one's self in the process." With absolute honesty, Helen shares how she faced the unexpected, and often painful challenges of love, loss, fear, which has led to the joyful triumph of new beginnings. Through it all, she discovered inner strength, deeper faith in God, peaceful closure for what was, and abounding hope for what has yet to unfold.

This report reviews international research into the barriers to play for children with disabilities. The authors come from different disciplinary backgrounds, in Sociology, Social Policy, Anthropology, Occupational Health and Education and bring different concerns to this review. They are united, however, in their adoption of a rights-based perspective. The UNCRC and UNCRPD emphasise the right to play for children with disabilities. Play is vital for child development. The problem of 'play deprivation' for many children with disabilities is very real. Yet the right to, and value of 'play for the sake of play', for fun and recreation, must not be forgotten in relation to the lives of children with disabilities. The focus in this report is upon barriers to play that exist beyond the minds and bodies of individual children, within a 'disabling' environment. Barriers include those associated with the design of the built environment, social attitudes and professional practices. The report maps an agenda for further research in this area, emphasising the need for participatory methodologies that capture the views and voices of children with disabilities, their friends and families, on this important issue of play. Established in 1853, after the end of penal transportation to Australia, the convict prison system and the sentence of penal servitude offered the most severe form of punishment – short of death – in the criminal justice system, and they remained in place for nearly a century.Penal Servitude is the first comprehensive study to examine the convict prison system that housed all those who were sentenced to penal servitude during this time. Helen Johnston, Barry Godfrey, and David Cox detail the administration and evolution of the system, from its creation in the 1850s and the building of the prison estate to the classification of prisoners within it. Exploring life in the convict prison through the experiences of the people who were subjected to it, the authors shed light on various details such as prison diet, education, and labour. What they find reveals the internal regimes; the everyday endurances, conformity, resistance, and rule breaking of convicts; and the interactions with the warders, medical officers, and governors that shaped daily life in the system.Reconstructing the life histories of hundreds of convict prisoners from detailed prison records, criminal registers, census data, and personal correspondence, Penal Servitude illuminates the lives of those who experienced long-term imprisonment in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

What was life like in the Victorian underworld - who were the criminals, what crimes did they commit, how did they come to a criminal career, and what happened to them after they were released from prison? Victorian Convicts, by telling the stories of a hundred criminal men and women, gives the reader an insight into their families and social background, the conditions in which they lived, their relationships and working lives, and their offences. They reveal how these individuals were treated by the justice and penal system of 150 years ago, and how they were regarded by the wider world around them. Such a rare and authentic insight into life in and out of prison will be fascinating reading for anyone who is interested in the history of crime and criminals, in legal and prison history and in British society in the nineteenth century.

Mating Intelligence Unleashed

Mating Intelligence Unleashed

Glenn Geher; Scott Barry Kaufman; Helen Fisher

Oxford University Press Inc
2013
sidottu
There's intelligence involved in mating? Until recently, evolutionary psychologists have considered human mating behavior to be universal and similar to other animals, painting a picture of human mating as visceral, animalistic, and instinctual. But that's not the whole story. In courtship and display, sexual competition and rivalry, we are guided by Mating Intelligence, or the range of psychological abilities designed for sexual reproduction. Mating Intelligence is at work in our efforts to form, maintain, coordinate, and terminate relationships. It guides us in flirtation, foreplay, copulation, mind-reading, mate search, mate choice, and many other behaviors that may have reproductive payoffs. In Mating Intelligence Unleashed, psychologists Glenn Geher and Scott Barry Kaufman take a fascinating tour of the intersection of mating and intelligence by drawing on cutting-edge research on evolutionary psychology, intelligence, creativity, personality, social psychology, developmental psychology, neuroscience, epigenetics, and more. Along the way, they shed new light on age-old questions, such as: Can humor compensate for less-than-matinee looks? Why do artists have more sexual partners? What role does personality play in the mating domain? What traits influence attraction? How do people choose mates? How do men and women deceive each other? How important are kindness, compassion, and understanding? What about emotional intelligence? Do nice guys really finish last? This book will change the way you think about sex, dating, love, and the human mind.

Elementary educators can implement information literacy instruction across the curriculum and throughout the school with this invaluable guide. Beginning with a definition and description of information literacy and its components, the book details the roles and responsibilities of the literacy endeavor and it provides an in-service presentation for staff development. In addition, several state and organization information literacy standards are reviewed and interpreted, including the Information Literacy Standards for Student Learning, developed by AASL and AECT (1998). Thompson and Henley show the relationship between information literacy standards and national subject area curriculum standards. Scenarios that illustrate applications of the standards and strategies for incorporating standards and objectives into instructional units are given along with specific examples of integrated units of instruction. An annotated bibliography of WWW information literacy resources is provided as hot links on
