Making home explores the figure of the orphan child in a broad selection of contemporary US novels by popular and critically acclaimed authors Barbara Kingsolver, Linda Hogan, Leslie Marmon Silko, Marilynne Robinson, Michael Cunningham, Jonathan Safran Foer, John Irving, Kaye Gibbons, Octavia Butler, Jewelle Gomez and Toni Morrison. The orphan child is a continuous presence in US literature, not only in children’s books and nineteenth-century texts, but also in a variety of genres of contemporary fiction for adults. Making home examines the meanings of this figure in the contexts of American literary history, social history and ideologies of family, race and nation. It argues that contemporary orphan characters function as links to literary history and national mythologies, even as they may also serve to critique the limits of literary history, as well as the limits of familial and national belonging.

Human rights are a key issue for all healthcare and social care practitioners, and almost every aspect of dementia care has a human rights dimension. How can we balance the individual's right for dignity, autonomy and privacy against the backdrop of time constraints, duty of care and limited resources? Can a person with dementia be supported to participate in decision making? Is assistive technology always empowering? What must it feel like to be denied a dementia- specific service because of one's age? This practice guide addresses these along with other critical questions, helping you to better understand the diverse and often complex dimensions of dementia caregiving. It provides a new framework to enable you to apply a human rights approach to real life situations, placing the person with dementia at the centre stage and keeping their dignity, independence, sense of purpose and quality of life at the fore. The book builds on person-centred principles, uses case studies to demonstrate theory and provides new analytical tools to support all those committed to best practice in dementia care.

THE INAUGURAL ANTHOLOGY OF LITERATURE'S MOST PROMISING NEW VOICES "A welcome addition to the run of established short story annuals, promising good work to come." --Kirkus Reviews Many writers who are household names today got their start when an editor encountered their work for the first time and took a chance. This book celebrates twelve such moments of discovery. The first volume of an annual anthology, launched alongside PEN's new Robert J. Dau Short Story Prize for Emerging Writers, it recognizes writers who have had outstanding fiction debuts in a print or online literary magazine. The winning stories collected here--selected this year by judges Marie-Helene Bertino, Kelly Link, and Nina McConigley--take place in South Carolina and in South Korea, on a farm in the eighteenth century and among the cubicles of a computer- engineering firm in the present day. They narrate age-old themes with current urgency: migration, memory, technology, language, love, ecology, identity, family. Each work comes with an introduction by the editor who originally published it, explaining why he or she chose it. The commentaries provide insight into a process that often remains opaque to readers and students of writing, and showcase the vital work literary magazines do to nurture contemporary literature's new voices.

She decided to teach others about the special training deaf and blind children need. Helen traveled all over the globe and raised money to start up schools for deaf and blind children. Her courage and her determination to help others conquer the odds against them earned her the respect and admiration of the world.

"[My life] is so rich with blessings—an immense capacity of enjoyment, books, and beloved friends. . . . Most earnestly I pray the dear Heavenly Father that I may sometime make myself far more worthy of the love shown to me than I am now." —April 22, 1900 letter from Helen Keller to John Hitz, AFB When Helen Keller died in 1968, at the age of eighty-eight years old, she was one of the most widely known women in the world. The overnight success of her biography, The Story of My Life, written at age twenty-three, made it obvious to Keller that she was endowed with a gift for writing and speaking. As she got older, she increasingly began to do both on a variety of subjects extending beyond her own disability, including social, political, and theological issues. Helen Keller: Selected Writings collects Keller's personal letters, political writings, speeches, and excerpts of her published materials from 1887 to 1968. The book also includes an introductory essay by Kim E. Nielsen, headnotes to each document, and a selected bibliography of work by and about Keller. The majority of the letters and some prints, all drawn from the Helen Keller Archives at the American Foundation for the Blind in New York, are being published for the first time. Literature, education, advocacy, politics, religion, travel: the many interests of Helen Keller culminate in this book and are reflected in her spirited narration. Also portrayed are the individuals Keller inspired and took inspiration from, including her teacher Annie Sullivan, her family, and others with whom she formed friendships throughout the course of her life. This often charming collection revels in and preserves Keller's public and private life, coming to us in the year which marks the 125th anniversary of her birthday.
