Cyprus is a Mediterranean island and as it is located at the intersection of three continents and across from the Suez canal, it occupies a strategic geopolitical position. Its history and prehistory dates back nine millennia, while its Greek (Hellenic) character dates to about 1600 B.C. The connection of Cyprus with the following rather different and apparently dissimilar topics is remarkable. That is, Massachusetts Patriots, the Spirit of the Marathon, Greek liberation wars, British Empire, Ottoman Turkish Empire, Crimean War, Jewish homeland, self determination and love of freedom. The Cyprus-born, United States educated author puts all that together in his journey through Cyprus history to the end of the first half of the twentieth century. The author demonstrates how a peaceful people attempted to reach self determination from their colonial masters. Yet, this fundamental human right was denied and frustrated by the colonial ruling power. The escalation of hostilities that followed in this Mediterranean island in the second half of the 20th century was already staged by then, as shown in this book.

Originally published in 1994, the main function of this book was to provide to counsellors, trainee counsellors and teachers with pastoral care responsibilities, the knowledge and skills to support effective counselling. By drawing on their extensive pastoral and counselling experience gained in education and counselling, the authors produced a work which will also appeal to others involved in the care and protection of children and young people – including educational social workers, nurses, the police and educational psychologists. The authors integrate the development of counselling skills with a reflective stance on issues, approaches and ideas. They seek thus to increase the readers’ capacity to work sensitively and imaginatively with their clients, the sometimes troubled children and young people in primary and secondary schools.

A Vision for Girls

"To educate American girls and women in ways beyond the traditional has been a dangerous experiment that has challenged basic notions of female nature and has seemed to threaten the social order...One such bold venture in female education-the Bryn Mawr School of Baltimore, Maryland-is the subject of Andrea Hamilton's lively and well-researched book...In Hamilton's telling, the story of the Bryn Mawr School moves beyond its local particulars to illumine much about the history of American education and life...The importance of Hamilton's contribution is that she never loses sight of the complexity of the school and its relation to society. Her history of the Bryn Mawr School helps us understand aspects of the unique position held by American women in national social, intellectual, and cultural life."-from the Foreword by Helen Lefkowitz Horowitz Baltimore's Bryn Mawr School was founded in the 1880s, the first college-preparatory school for girls in the United States. Unlike other educational institutions at the time, the Bryn Mawr School championed intellectual equality of the sexes. Established with the goal of providing girls with an education identical to boys' in quality and compass, it endeavored to prepare girls to excel in a public sphere traditionally dominated by men. Narrating the history of the Bryn Mawr School, Andrea Hamilton's A Vision for Girls examines the value of single-sex education, America's shifting educational philosophy, and significant changes in the role of women in American society. Hamilton reveals an institution that was both ahead of its time and a product of its time. A Vision for Girls offers an original and engaging history of an institution that helped shape educational goals in America, shedding light on the course of American education and attitudes toward women's intellectual and professional capabilities.

Surrealismen föds i Paris 1924.

Rajojen rikkojat tuo esille uusinta tutkimusta 1800-luvun naistaiteilijoiden työskentelymahdollisuuksista taiteen alalla. Mukana on 17 tutkijaa kahdeksasta tutkimuksen kohteena olevasta maasta.

Crossing Borders tells the story of pioneering women artists - Nordics, Baltic Germans, Poles and Germans - who studied and worked in Germany in the 1800s. There is a particular focus on the contacts and social networks created by these artists in Dresden, Düsseldorf, Karlsruhe, Munich, Weimar and Berlin. Trips to Italy by some artists form a side path. Cities in present-day Germany were seen as centres of art, culture and science, while the Nordic countries, the Baltic states and Poland were on the periphery. In addition to the artists' biographies, presentations of their work and the networks they created, the book's 18 articles deal specifically with women's opportunities for education and travel. Crossing Borders presents the latest research on female artists' opportunities to work in the art field in the nineteenth century. The contributors include 17 researchers from the eight countries studied.

Attachment in Intellectual and Developmental Disability “Skillfully introduced and edited by Helen Fletcher and her colleagues, this long-needed collection of excellent chapters on attachment and disability reveals the vast wellspring of resilience that persons with disability possess – or can be helped to achieve. Readers will discover how best to support a family member, client or friend with a ‘disability’. A definitive resource for multiple disciplines, this book is surely required reading for all those working in the health professions aimed at addressing the needs of those with severe physical, mental or emotional impairments.” Professor Howard Steele, New School for Social Research “This informative, comprehensive text is unique, and is destined to become an invaluable national and international resource on attachment issues in the field of intellectual and developmental disabilities. Given the breadth and depth of this book, practitioners can use it both as a guide in practice and as a resource for research purposes. Both the editors and contributors are to be congratulated for introducing attachment theory to a wider audience, who will all, I am sure, appreciate the centrality and importance of this theoretical framework to their everyday practice.” Professor Bob Gates, University of West London This title in The Wiley Series in Clinical Psychology is the first to explore the role of attachment theory in understanding and helping children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). There is a growing evidence base of interventions for IDD underpinned by attachment theory, including direct intervention and the application of attachment theory to understand the interactions and relationships that occur between individuals with IDD and those who support them. Attachment in Intellectual and Developmental Disability brings together leading clinicians and researchers to present and integrate cutting-edge models and approaches that have previously been accessible only to specialists. They discuss the role of attachment theory in clinical practice when working across the lifespan of people with IDD, the theoretical basis of attachment difficulties, and how these difficulties are presented. They also discuss practical approaches to assessment and intervention, using clear case studies to illustrate the applications of attachment theory to clinical work.
