Grimm's Fairy Tales - With Many Illustrations in Colour and in Black-and-White by Helen Stratton
This collection of 'Grimm's Fairy Tales' contains a fabulous selection of fifty-two classic Brothers Grimm Tales. It includes the narratives of 'Hansel and Gretel', 'Rumpeltstiltskin', 'Ashputtel', 'Tom Thumb', 'The Robber Bridegroom' and many more. The stories have all been profusely illustrated with black-and-white, and colour plates - by a master of the Golden Age of Illustration; Helen Stratton. Stratton was an artist and illustrator, born in India, who lived and worked in London and Glasgow - working in the Art Nouveaux style. The Brothers Grimm are perhaps the best known folklorists of all time. Die Br der Grimm; Jacob (1785-1863) and Wilhelm Grimm (1786-1859), were German academics, linguists, cultural researchers, lexicographers and authors - who together specialized in collecting and publishing folklore during the nineteenth century. The popularity of their collected tales has endured well; they have been translated into more than 100 languages, and remain in print in the present day. This is a text to be appreciated by young and old alike; extraordinary for its literary as well as artistic significance. Pook Press celebrates the great 'Golden Age of Illustration' in children's literature - a period of unparalleled excellence in book illustration from the 1880s to the 1930s. Our collection showcases classic fairy tales, children's stories, and the work of some of the most celebrated artists, illustrators and authors.
British Divas Of The 1960s Volume One: Dusty Springfield, Helen Shapiro, Cilla Black & Kathy Kirby
DUSTY SPRINGFIELD: The creator of the unique style known as 'blue-eyed soul', she was instrumental in introducing Motown to Britain, and for several years reigned supreme on both sides of the Atlantic. Her voice, flute-like, sensual and smoky frequently in the space of the same song, was similarly unique. She remains a show business legend years after her death, yet also an enigma, a completely self-fabricated, difficult yet vulnerable woman who allowed few access to her complex, in turns exhuberant and neurotic world where at times there was little difference between reality and make-believe.CILLA BLACK: The only important British female singer to emerge from the 'Mersey Sound' explosion. The archetypal girl-next-door, her speciality was powerhouse Continental ballads, with which she was unrivalled. Her sudden death in August 2015 sent an entire country into profound mourning.HELEN SHAPIRO: The teenage sensation whose commercial career ended as the other Brit Girls were coming into their own, though she went on to fashion a successful career in jazz.KATHY KIRBY: Britain's glamorous answer to Marilyn Monroe, a phenomenally talented, technically and vocally perfect but tetchy individual for whom there was no such thing as a bed take.Contains full UK and European 60s vinyl discographies

Helen Macfarlane, a young British woman, was living in Vienna when she was radicalized by the 1848 Revolution. On returning to England in 1850, she became a journalist for the radical wing of the Chartist movement. The Chartists received support from such luminaries as Karl Marx and Fredrich Engles; the latter had written on the movement's political significance. It was Marx who described Macfarlane as the most original writer in the Chartist press. Macfarlane was the first English translator of The Communist Manifesto. Her original translation is included in this edition. She is also the first of the British to comment, critically and extensively, on the revolutionary implications of Hegel's philosophy. After having been hidden for a century her stature as a revolutionary, writer, and feminist emerges in David Black's seminal work. With diligent research into her life and work, Black, in Helen Macfarlane: A Feminist, Revolutionary Journalist, and Philosopher in Mid 19th Century England, recreates her intellectual and political world at a key turning point in European history. This work also includes Macfarlane's original translation of The Communist Manifesto.

The Story of Little Black Sambo is a children's book written and illustrated by Scottish author Helen Bannerman, and published by Grant Richards in October 1899 as one in a series of small-format books called The Dumpy Books for Children. The story was a children's favourite for more than half a century. Sambo is a South Indian boy who lives with his father and mother, named Black Jumbo and Black Mumbo, respectively. While out walking, Sambo encounters four hungry tigers, and surrenders his colourful new clothes, shoes, and umbrella so they will not eat him. The tigers are vain and each thinks Sambo's clothes are the best. They chase each other around a tree until they are reduced to a pool of ghee (clarified butter). Sambo then recovers his clothes and collects the ghee, which his mother uses to make pancakes
