From basic principles to insights into pioneering research, this introductory textbook provides the fundamentals of cancer biology that will enable students of biology and medicine to enter the field with confidence. It opens with a discussion of global cancer patterns, how cancers arise, and the risk factors involved. A description of the normal signalling pathways within cells then explains how DNA mutations affect proteins and what this means for the development and behaviour of tumours. Later chapters discuss methods for tumour detection, biomarker identification and the impact of genome sequencing, before reviewing the development of anti-cancer drugs and exciting current advances in treatment. With 50% new material, including two new chapters on genetic analysis of cancer and cancer chemotherapy, improved pedagogy, examples of revolutionising technologies in drug design and delivery, and useful online resources, this textbook offers an accessible and engaging account of cancer biology for undergraduate and graduate students.

This concise overview of the fundamental concepts of cancer biology is ideal for those with little or no background in the field. A summary of global cancer patterns introduces students to the general principles of how cancers arise and the risk factors involved. By focusing on fundamental examples of the signalling pathways within cells, the functional effects of DNA damage are explained. Later chapters then build on this foundation to provide a comprehensive summary of the major signalling pathways that affect tumour development. Current therapeutic strategies are reviewed, along with a discussion of methods for tumour detection and biomarker identification. Finally, the impact of whole genome sequencing is discussed, bringing students up to date with key recent developments in the field. From basic principles to insights into cutting-edge research, this book will enable the reader to move into the cancer field with confidence.

If God Can Heal Me, Why Am I Still Sick?

If God Can Heal Me, Why Am I Still Sick?

Gordon Hesketh

Why do so many people who believe that God has the power to heal our diseases still remain sick? Why does it seem that most healing prayers are never answered? Does God have some higher purpose in mind? Does God allow us to be sick, or does He use sickness to teach us or to draw us to Him? That's what religion says, but is this the truth? 'If God Can Heal Me, Why Am I Still Sick' answers the question everyone asks when facing illness, by explaining clearly why most people fail to receive their healing even when they know that God has the power and ability to heal them. Religion offers many excuses about why people aren't healed; consequently, many who are sick are left wondering, 'Will God heal ME' This book will prove that God's very nature requires you to be well in every case, and shows you how to receive your healing and stay in health. "I just want you to know your book truly blessed and inspired me I found it while browsing the net and it was no accident. Father God knew I needed it while fighting alarming heart symptoms in my body I believe that Jesus has already healed me and I will now not be tricked into having a manifestation before believing I am already healed Thanks again for sharing, blessing, and caring " - Ken H

Ecce Homo: A Survey in the Life and Work of Jesus Christ, published anonymously in 1865, alarmed some readers and delighted others by its presentation of a humanitarian view of Christ and early Christian history. Victorian Jesus explores the relationship between historian J. R. Seeley and his publisher Alexander Macmillan as they sought to keep Seeley’s authorship a secret while also trying to exploit the public interest. Ian Hesketh highlights how Ecce Homo's reception encapsulates how Victorians came to terms with rapidly changing religious views in the second half of the nineteenth century. Hesketh critically examines Seeley’s career and public image, and the publication and reception of his controversial work. Readers and commentators sought to discover the author’s identity in order to uncover the hidden meaning of the book, and this engendered a lively debate about the ethics of anonymous publishing. In Victorian Jesus, Ian Hesketh argues for the centrality of this moment in the history of anonymity in book and periodical publishing throughout the century.

Tell me, sir, is it on your grandmother's or your grandfather's side that you are descended from an ape? In June of 1860, some of Britain's most influential scientific and religious authorities gathered in Oxford to hear a heated debate on the merits of Charles Darwin's recently published Origin of Species. The Bishop of Oxford, "Soapy" Samuel Wilberforce, clashed swords with Darwin's most outspoken supporter, Thomas Henry Huxley. The latter's triumph, amid quips about apes and ancestry, has become a mythologized event, symbolizing the supposed war between science and Christianity. But did the debate really happen in this way? Of Apes and Ancestors argues that this one-dimensional interpretation was constructed and disseminated by Darwin's supporters, becoming an imagined victory in the struggle to overcome Anglican dogmatism. By reconstructing the Oxford debate and carefully considering the individual perspectives of the main participants, Ian Hesketh argues that personal jealousies and professional agendas played a formative role in shaping the response to Darwin's hypothesis, with religious anxieties overlapping with a whole host of other cultural and scientific considerations. An absorbing study, Of Apes and Ancestors sheds light on the origins of a debate that continues, unresolved, to this day.
